Former MSU golfer Ryan Brehm has rollercoaster first round at Rocket Classic
With the PGA Tour returning for their annual trip to Detroit, the seventh edition of the Rocket Classic began on Thursday at the Detroit Golf Club. Former Spartan Ryan Brehm, a 2008 Michigan State graduate, has been a mainstay on the PGA Tour, and he made another start in Detroit.
The Mt. Pleasant (MI) native, Brehm is looking to get his 2025 summer off of the ground, and is looking towards his hometown PGA Tour event to do so.
On Thursday, it was an up and down affair for Brehm, who ultimately finished at a 71 (-1). At one point, late in the first round, Brehm was sitting at a very comfortable -3, but back to back bogeys to finish his round left a sour taste in his mouth.
While he is a few shoots off of the number to make the weekend, he is still very much in the mix for making his first cut of 2025, but is in need for a big day on Friday.
He will tee off at 7:07 a.m. on the first tee, looking for a big day to make the weekend.

Aldrich Potgieter, in search of first PGA Tour win, leads entering final round of Rocket Classic

Aldrich Potgieter made five consecutive birdies on the front nine Saturday at Detroit Golf Club in shooting 65 and taking the outright 54-hole lead at the Rocket Classic. The 20-year-old South African stands at 19 under, two shots clear of Max Greyserman (66), Jake Knapp (66), Mark Hubbard (67), Andrew Putnam (69) and Chris Kirk (69). Potgieter shared the first-round lead after matching the course record (62), which was set eight minutes earlier on Thursday by Kevin Roy. Knapp broke that record Friday with a 61, but it was the trio of Kirk, Philip Knowles and Putnam who shared the midway lead, at 14 under. Potgieter, following a 70, was two back. After a birdie and two pars to start Round 3, Potgieter birdied Nos. 4-8 to turn in 6-under 30. He cooled off on the back with one birdie and eight pars. Potgieter won last year on the Korn Ferry Tour in earning his PGA Tour card for this season. He lost in a playoff at February's Mexico Championship to Brian Campbell and is currently 73rd in FedExCup points. Knowles is now eight back after a 75 while Roy (69) is currently T-13 and five back.

MSU hockey commit Max Heise selected by San Jose Sharks in NHL Entry Draft
A future Michigan State hockey player has been selected by the San Jose Sharks in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. Max Heise was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the fifth round of the NHL Entry Draft on Saturday. The Sharks used the No. 150 overall pick to obtain Heise's rights. Heise is committed to Michigan State, and is expected to join the Spartans for the 2026-27 season. He will be playing in the WHL next year on the Prince Albert Raiders. Heise is considered a center but can also play on the wing if needed. This past season, Heise recorded 27 goals and 40 points for the Penticton Vees of the BCHL. Search and annoy: Harrington, NBC's Maltbie caught in tiff over lost ball at US Senior Open
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — A video of Padraig Harrington arguing with NBC on-course reporter Roger Maltbie for not helping him look for a lost ball during his opening round is generating buzz at the U.S. Senior Open. 'Never on a golf course stand and look at somebody looking for a golf ball,' Harrington is seen telling Maltbie on video captured by a local TV reporter outside the scoring area. 'You've played golf all your life. You understand.' The argument stemmed from Thursday's round, when Harrington teed off into a thicket of trees on the 15th hole. After about a dozen people unsuccessfully searched for the allowed three minutes, Harrington went back to the tee box for his third shot. He ended up saving bogey, and went into the weekend tied for the lead. Maltbie, the longtime on-course reporter who played on the PGA Tour in the 1970s and '80s, was in the area. He told on Saturday he was being asked to report on the scenario and couldn't step away from his job to help in the search. A day after the episode, Harrington and Maltbie aired out their differences near the scoring area. Maltbie can be heard telling Harrington, 'So I should have disobeyed my producer?' ___
