Coastal road near Kappad damaged in sea erosion
Disrupting vehicular movement, nearly a one-kilometre stretch of the road leading to the Blue Flag-certified Kappad beach now remains damaged due to the ongoing sea surge.
Families of fishermen along the coastal area complain that they are living in fear now with the worsening weather conditions and failed protective measures. Many who regularly used the coastal road for their daily commute between Kappad and Koyilandy harbour are now forced to rely on longer alternative routes, they say.
A section of the local tourism facility operators along the coastal area has also been dragged into a crisis with the disrupted road connectivity. They say many are in a situation to leave the business or relocate to other places following safety concerns.
'It is impossible to protect this coastal road without a stronger seawall, built after scientifically assessing the nature of the surge and the character of the coastline. The Tourism department has a greater responsibility to push for further action,' says P. Mohammed, a local tourism entrepreneur. He points out that further delay will negatively impact the tourism prospects of the entire destination.
Though the State government has recently sanctioned ₹12 crore for the seawall construction in the worst-affected area, the work is likely to be delayed further due to the destroyed road connectivity. Local administrators also feel that the sanctioned amount may not be sufficient to cover the actual requirements, including road renovation.
'Constructing a long seawall to cover all affected areas between Kappad and Koyilandy harbour is hardly a viable solution, considering the risky terrain. We believe that the speedy completion of the proposed coastal highway is the most practical solution,' says Chemanchery grama panchayat president Sathi Kizhakkayil. She adds that the dangerous sea surges every year make it difficult to propose any expensive road renovation projects.

Rushikonda Blue Flag Beach in Vizag will be beautified further, says A.P. Tourism Minister
Minister for Tourism Kandula Durgesh inspected the Rushikonda Blue Flag Beach on Thursday. Mr. Durgesh said that greater coordination between officials and the people's representatives was being ensured to ensure proper upkeep of the facilities created at the Blue Flag Beach. The Blue Flag tag was temporarily withdrawn by the Denmark-based Foundation for Environment Education (FEE) after it received complaints related to poor maintenance of amenities at Rushikonda. However, the tag has been restored now, the Minister said. He assured the vendors managing stalls on the beach and the Life Guards posted there of providing a solution to the issues raised by them. He announced that apart from improving standards at the Blue Flag beach, measures would be taken for further beautification to improve the tourist footfall. Double-decker bus services on the Beach Road would be a major tourist attraction, Mr. Durgesh said. Terming the Blue Flag certification for Rushikonda Beach as a major achievement, the Minister said it would attract tourists from across the globe. With the facilities including washrooms, changing rooms and grey water treatment, the Blue Flad beach will attarct International tourists, he said. The Minister called upon the officials and visitors to ensure cleanliness, hygiene and proper upkeep of the facilities to ensure that the Blue Flag certificate was not withdrawn. 'The Tourism Department will undertake beautification of the beach at a cost of ₹24 lakh,' Mr. Durgesh said. He also spoke about the measures initiated for the revival of the cruise liner operation. A decision has been taken to operate the cruise liner four times till September this year. Measures will be taken to operate it through out the year,' Mr. Durgesh added. Bheemunipatnam MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao, District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad and Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Commissioner Ketan Garg accompanied the Tourism Minister during the inspection.

More Blue Flag Certification beaches to come up in AP
Visakhapatnam: Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh revealed that apart from maintaining the Blue Flag Certification standards at Rushikonda beach, steps will be taken for the beautification of beach stretches. Visiting Rushikonda in Visakhapatnam on Thursday along with Bheemunipatnam MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao, Visakhapatnam District Collector Harindhira Prasad and GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg, the minister informed that few more Blue Flag beaches would be developed in Andhra Pradesh. Assuring shopkeepers and lifeguards that the government would resolve their issues brought to his attention, the minister informed that they discussed measures required to increase the tourists' footfall at the beach. Later, Kandula Durgesh inspected the double-decker EV buses that will ply along the beach road. He said that the double-decker buses, which are going to be a tourist attraction, will soon be operated in Visakhapatnam. They will provide an enjoyable ride for the tourists and city residents. Minister Kandula Durgesh expressed hope that the double-decker buses will take Visakhapatnam's tourism sector to the next level. He said that Blue Flag Beach Certification is an international level recognition given based on meeting several parameters. He said that the Visakhapatnam Port Authority built the international cruise terminal with all amenities and it has been decided to operate it for four times till September. Later, steps will be taken to operate the cruise 365 days, he added. Later, the minister interacted with students on how the tourism sector aids in providing employment opportunities. The session was organised in the presence of Bheemunipatnam MLA Ganta Srinviasa Rao, Sun International Institute Tourism and Management chairman and managing director Srikanth Jasti, and executive director Asha Jasti. The minister lauded the efforts of the institution's management and added that it stands as the top institution in Andhra Pradesh in the hospitality sector. In the days to come, he assured that efforts will be taken to set up a tourism university in Visakhapatnam. Speaking on the occasion, Bheemunipatnam MLA Ganta Srinviasa Rao remarked that students are now showing keen interest in pursuing tourism and hospitality course and appreciated the Sun International management for its commitment and dedication in steering the students towards achieving their goals.
