Prayers and Yasin recital mark start of Islamic year 1447H
KUALA LUMPUR: In the calm of dusk, the prayer hall of Masjid Negara echoed with heartfelt supplications as Muslims marked the arrival of 1 Muharram 1447 Hijrah, ushering in the new Islamic year.
From as early as 6.30pm, more than 1,000 congregants, including tahfiz students and members of the public, gathered in the mosque's main prayer hall for the year-end and new year prayers in commemoration of the Hijrah.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar and Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee were also in attendance.
At 7.25pm, the year-end prayer for 1446H was recited, followed by the Maghrib (sunset) call to prayer and the new year prayer, both led by Masjid Negara Grand Imam Ehsan Mohd Hosni.
The programme continued after Maghrib with the recital of Surah Yasin – the 36th chapter of the Quran, often referred to as the 'heart of the Quran' – and a special prayer seeking blessings, protection, and well-being for the ummah (global Muslim community) in the year ahead.
Following Isyak (night) prayers, a solat jenazah ghaib (funeral prayer in absentia) was performed for Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM) chairman Professor Datuk Dr Muhammad Nur Manuty, who passed away at 11.27am today at Sultan Idris Shah Hospital, Serdang.
Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Mohd Na'im urged Muslims to embrace the spirit of Hijrah not merely as a historical event, but as an ongoing journey of personal and communal transformation.
He said 1st Muharram is a timely opportunity for introspection, to shed narrow thinking and negativity, and to strive towards building a more progressive and balanced society.
"May we be granted the strength and resolve to continue spreading good, developing our potential and contributing to national progress," he said.
The National Maal Hijrah 1447H/2025M celebration will take place tomorrow at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC).
His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim and Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, the King and Queen of Malaysia, are scheduled to grace the event.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and members of the cabinet are also expected to attend, along with more than 8,000 guests, including foreign dignitaries, as well as heads of government departments and agencies.
This year's theme, 'Membangun Ummah Madani' (Developing a Civilised Society), emphasises the importance of drawing inspiration from the historic Hijrah to build an inclusive and progressive society, grounded in both spiritual strength and moral excellence.– BERNAMA

Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Law, State-Federal Relations and MA63) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali made the call when officiating the closing ceremony of the Festival Maal Hijrah 1447H/2025M at Masjid Jamek Negeri Sarawak here today. 'I urge all Muslims, especially in Sarawak, to continue supporting mosque-organised programmes. 'Let us be part of the movement to enliven the House of Allah, making the mosque a point of reference for the community and a centre for welfare and dakwah (Islamic propagation),' she said in her speech. The closing ceremony marked the conclusion of the 10-day festival, organised by Lembaga Amanah Kebajikan Masjid Negeri Sarawak (LAKMNS), which began on June 20. The ceremony was officiated with the symbolic lowering of the official festival flag. Representing the Deputy Prime Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof, who was away on official duty in Russia, Sharifah Hasidah conveyed his congratulations and appreciation to LAKMNS for the successful organisation of the festival. 'This festival not only highlights the role of mosques but also strengthens bonds among people from various walks of life through programmes blending information and entertainment,' she added. According to her, the festival is clear proof that LAKMNS is at the forefront in managing and modernising mosque institutions through dynamic and innovative approaches that are aligned with the evolving needs of the ummah. 'LAKMNS' continuous efforts to uplift the welfare of the ummah through various mosque and community development initiatives are commendable. 'This reflects a holistic approach encompassing spiritual, social, educational and welfare aspects, making the mosque a true institution for empowerment,' she said. 300 Asnaf In Beserah Receive Food Aid Worth RM60,000
KUANTAN, June 29 (Bernama) -- A total of 300 asnaf (eligible zakat recipients) in Beserah received food baskets worth RM60,000 in conjunction with the Indera Mahkota Al-Falah MADANI Carnival 2025 today. Religious affairs minister censures surau for ejecting worshipper, says mosques are not ‘exclusive spaces'
KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 – Religious Affairs Minister Datuk Mohd Na'im Mokhtar has expressed disappointment over a viral incident involving a male worshipper who was removed from a surau in Teluk Panglima Garang in Selangor after performing Subuh prayers. He added that the removal of a worshipper who was not causing disruption went against the values of mercy and respect fundamental to Islam. 'Suraus and mosques are sanctuaries for the soul... not exclusive spaces to be controlled without wisdom and compassion,' Mohd Na'im said. He also called for mosque and surau administrators to adopt a more compassionate and respectful approach, particularly when dealing with elderly congregants. 'Administrative actions must be carried out with decorum and respectful communication – not in a manner that humiliates others,' he said. The individual, believed to be the father of popular preacher PU Azhar Hilmi, was reportedly engaged in acts of worship such as i'tikaf and waiting for Dhuha prayers alone when he was asked to leave by a female staff of the surau. Mohd Na'im also stressed that preserving the sanctity of mosques went beyond maintaining their physical structure, and included fostering moral conduct and a spiritually uplifting environment. He then urged all parties to resolve the issue in a spirit of mutual forgiveness to ensure suraus remain welcoming and dignified spaces for all worshippers. The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) also weighed in, saying the incident must be taken seriously as it concerns proper decorum and governance at religious premises. 'Mosques and suraus are institutions of rahmah that shape the character and unity of the ummah,' said Jakim director-general Datuk Sirajuddin Suhaimee, using the Arabic word that means 'compassion' or 'blessings'. He said Jakim continues to promote the values of Masjid Rahmah by engaging mosque administrators and the public in efforts to uphold Islamic ethics and ensure places of worship remain peaceful and inclusive. 'A key focus is on upholding Islamic ethics in treating worshippers and visitors with kindness, particularly within the sacred spaces of Allah that should foster serenity, peace, and reflection,' he added.
