KUALA LUMPUR: Muslims across the country welcomed the 1447 Hijrah new year with heartfelt devotion and reflection at year-end and new year prayer ceremonies held in mosques and suraus nationwide last night. The year-end prayer for 1446H was recited shortly before Maghrib to mark the end of the previous year, followed by the new year prayer for 1447H, seeking abundant blessings, safety, and well-being for the nation and all Muslims. Apart from the prayers, congregants also recited Yasin, munajat (supplication), and zikir as spiritual nourishment to mark the occasion of the Islamic new year. In KUALA LUMPUR, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar and Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee were among nearly 1,000 congregants attending the ceremony at the National Mosque. In SARAWAK, the ceremony at the Assyakirin Mosque in Bintulu was attended by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak, Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, and other state leaders. The ceremony included Yasin recitation and tahlil for the late Puan Sri Juma'ani Tuanku Bujang, wife of Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, led by Sarawak Grand Imam Datuk Mustapha Kamal Ahmad Fauzi. In PERAK, the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, and the Raja Permaisuri of Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim, attended the state-level Maal Hijrah 1447H celebration in Ipoh, which was joined by around 1,000 guests. In SELANGOR, the Maal Hijrah celebration took place at the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque in Shah Alam, attended by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. In MELAKA, more than 3,000 people joined the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Melaka, Tun Dr Mohd Ali Rustam, and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh at Al-Hakeem Mosque in Kampung Tehel, Bemban, for the state-level celebration. In KEDAH, the Sultan, Al-Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah, accompanied by the Raja Muda of Kedah, Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah Sultan Salehuddin, attended the Yasin recital and prayer ceremony in conjunction with the state-level Maal Hijrah celebration at Zahir Mosque in Alor Setar. Meanwhile, in NEGRI SEMBILAN, the Yang di-Pertuan Besar, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, graced the state-level Maal Hijrah celebration at the State Mosque in Seremban.

KUALA LUMPUR: In the calm of dusk, the prayer hall of Masjid Negara echoed with heartfelt supplications as Muslims marked the arrival of 1 Muharram 1447 Hijrah, ushering in the new Islamic year. From as early as 6.30pm, more than 1,000 congregants, including tahfiz students and members of the public, gathered in the mosque's main prayer hall for the year-end and new year prayers in commemoration of the Hijrah. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar and Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee were also in attendance. At 7.25pm, the year-end prayer for 1446H was recited, followed by the Maghrib (sunset) call to prayer and the new year prayer, both led by Masjid Negara Grand Imam Ehsan Mohd Hosni. The programme continued after Maghrib with the recital of Surah Yasin – the 36th chapter of the Quran, often referred to as the 'heart of the Quran' – and a special prayer seeking blessings, protection, and well-being for the ummah (global Muslim community) in the year ahead. Following Isyak (night) prayers, a solat jenazah ghaib (funeral prayer in absentia) was performed for Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM) chairman Professor Datuk Dr Muhammad Nur Manuty, who passed away at 11.27am today at Sultan Idris Shah Hospital, Serdang. Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Mohd Na'im urged Muslims to embrace the spirit of Hijrah not merely as a historical event, but as an ongoing journey of personal and communal transformation. He said 1st Muharram is a timely opportunity for introspection, to shed narrow thinking and negativity, and to strive towards building a more progressive and balanced society. "May we be granted the strength and resolve to continue spreading good, developing our potential and contributing to national progress," he said. The National Maal Hijrah 1447H/2025M celebration will take place tomorrow at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC). His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim and Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, the King and Queen of Malaysia, are scheduled to grace the event. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and members of the cabinet are also expected to attend, along with more than 8,000 guests, including foreign dignitaries, as well as heads of government departments and agencies. This year's theme, 'Membangun Ummah Madani' (Developing a Civilised Society), emphasises the importance of drawing inspiration from the historic Hijrah to build an inclusive and progressive society, grounded in both spiritual strength and moral excellence.– BERNAMA

National-level Maal Hijrah celebration to take place at Mitec this Friday

KUALA LUMPUR: The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) will host the National Maal Hijrah 1447H/2025M celebration at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec) here this Friday. Jakim director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee said His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim and Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, the King and Queen of Malaysia are expected to grace the event, which carries the theme Membangun Ummah Madani (Developing a Madani Ummah). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail are also scheduled to attend the ceremony, which will begin at 9.30am and is expected to draw around 8,000 guests. These include Cabinet ministers, deputy ministers, heads of government departments and agencies, foreign dignitaries and members of the public. "This year's celebration aims to highlight the importance of drawing lessons from the hijrah in building a progressive Muslim community," Sirajuddin said in a statement today. He said a Madani ummah embodies the principle of inclusivity in developing a civilised society, not only in terms of physical development, but also in nurturing spiritually excellent human capital. The highlight of the event will be a Royal Address by His Majesty, as well as the presentation of the National and International Tokoh Maal Hijrah Awards to individuals who have made significant contributions to Islamic development and the advancement of the ummah. In conjunction with the celebration, a special prayer ceremony to mark the end and beginning of the Islamic year will take place at 6.30pm this Thursday at Masjid Negara (National Mosque). The ceremony will be attended by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, with prayers led by the Grand Imam Ehsan Mohd Hosni. A special tausiyyah (religious lecture) will also be delivered by Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Izhar Ariff Mohd Kashim from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). "May this year's Maal Hijrah celebration bring renewed hope and unity to Muslims in Malaysia and around the world, in the spirit of togetherness exemplified by Prophet Muhammad SAW in Madinah," said Sirajuddin.
