Government yet to consider rent-to-own scheme
Published on: Tue, Jul 08, 2025
By: Crystal E Hermenegildus Text Size: Deputy Chief Minister and Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam said the current policy remains rental-only, as converting these units to rent-to-own would reduce availability for others still on the waiting list. Kota Kinabalu: The State Government has yet to consider implementing a rent-to-own scheme for People's Housing Project (PPR) units in Sabah, said challenges due to the overwhelming demand for rental housing. Deputy Chief Minister and Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam said the current policy remains rental-only, as converting these units to rent-to-own would reduce availability for others still on the waiting list. 'This PPR is a temporary measure. If we start offering rent-to-own, it could worsen the problem as many more people are still waiting to rent these units,' he said during the State Legislative Assembly sitting on Monday. He was responding to a supplementary question by Lamag Assemblyman Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, who had asked if the government would consider new approaches to help low-income residents eventually own homes, especially amid the rising cost of housing in Sabah. Bung Moktar pointed out that many residents remain stuck in long-term rentals due to the high property prices, and suggested the State work with federal agencies to offer a clearer pathway to home ownership. In reply, Joachim said PPR housing in Sabah is provided by the Federal Government specifically for rental purposes, and there is currently no directive to shift towards a rent-to-own model. 'Perhaps the honourable member for Lamag could bring up this matter again in Parliament,' he said. Earlier, Joachim addressed concerns raised by Tanjung Aru Assemblyman Datuk Junz Wong regarding the relocation of residents from the Tanjung Aru Flats, which were deemed unsafe. He said 237 of the 315 tenants had been offered PPR housing under the Low-Cost Housing Allocation Policy, while 58 did not qualify and 20 were found to already own property. Of those offered housing, 113 have accepted and been relocated to various PPR sites including Taman Jaya Diri, Taman Bukit Setia, Taman Puri Warisan, Taman Sri Anak, PPR Kibabaig, PPT Gayang 2, Taman Keramat, and Taman Serigai. However, 124 tenants declined the offer due to distance concerns related to work, schools and healthcare facilities. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Rafizi to launch ‘Ayuh Malaysia' as social enterprise platform
Published on: Tuesday, July 08, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 08, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: The 'Ayuh Malaysia' campaign was launched in 2022, ahead of the PKR polls that year which saw Rafizi Ramli elected as deputy president. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: Former economy minister Rafizi Ramli will launch a social enterprise platform named 'Ayuh Malaysia' on July 27, which he says was part of his plan even before his recent defeat in the PKR central leadership polls. Rafizi said it was another way of bringing change to society and local communities, outside of politics. He said 'Ayuh Malaysia' would operate differently from profit-oriented businesses and donation-reliant NGOs by empowering local communities to conduct economic activities that are both effective and self-sustaining. 'Social enterprises return their profits to workers and the community, unlike conventional businesses,' he said in a statement. Rafizi said 'Ayuh Malaysia' would also serve as a one-stop platform to set up and connect social enterprises while providing them with the expertise and additional financial resources needed to operate. It will also connect social enterprises with potential beneficiaries. 'I believe the strength of our society lies in building sustainable community structures, especially as political instability continues,' he said. Rafizi stepped down as economy minister last month after losing the PKR deputy presidency to Nurul Izzah Anwar in May. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Rosmah secures damages over TikTok black magic allegation
Published on: Tuesday, July 08, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 08, 2025 By: FMT Text Size: PETALING JAYA: The Kuala Lumpur High Court has ordered a TikTok user to pay Rosmah Mansor RM100,000 for defaming her by claiming she was involved in black magic and bomohs (shamans). Justice Ahmad Shahrir Salleh made the decision after the defendant, Ku Hilmie Ku Din, 35, failed to file a memorandum of appearance to respond to Rosmah's suit by the stipulated date. During the proceedings, held online via Zoom, Shahrir said the wife of former prime minister Najib Razak had successfully established her claim against Ku Hilmie, Berita Harian reported. The RM100,000 was for both general and aggravated damages, he said. 'The claim for exemplary damages is not allowed since there is no solid evidence to support such an award,' the judge added. Rosmah filed the lawsuit on Sept 19, 2023, seeking RM1 million in damages from the TikTok account holder for a loss of reputation over his claim. She claimed that the defendant had, six months earlier, uploaded a video on his TikTok account containing false and defamatory statements about her. The impugned statements accused her of committing sinful acts and being involved in rituals involving the devil and bomohs. They also accused her of practising polytheism. Rosmah said the statements damaged her reputation as the wife of Malaysia's sixth prime minister and a patron of various charitable organisations in the country. She also claimed they had caused her to be viewed negatively by the public, and to be ridiculed and insulted, as well as tarnished her reputation as a prominent public figure. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
