Hospitals charge money, but don't give security: Union Minister on Patna shooting

India Today17-07-2025
Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi has blamed private hospitals for failing to provide adequate security after a firing incident inside Patna's Paras Hospital. He said such facilities charge patients heavily but don't invest in safety, adding that the government cannot be held responsible for what he described as a gang war in a private setup."This is a gang war. No sadhu was shot, and it wasn't a government hospital," said Manjhi. "Had the incident occurred at a government hospital, the government would have acted immediately. Still, now that it has happened, action will be taken."advertisementHe blamed the hospital for security lapses. "Paras Hospital should have maintained proper security. Private hospitals charge hefty fees but don't provide adequate protection," he said.
Referring to the state's crackdown on criminals, Manjhi added, "Ab to Bihar mein apradhiyon ko thok diya jaata hai (Now in Bihar, criminals are being gunned down)."The incident took place late Sunday night when five armed men entered Paras Hospital in Patna and opened fire on undertrial gangster Chandan Mishra, who was admitted on parole from Buxar jail. Mishra sustained multiple bullet injuries and is in critical condition in the ICU.CCTV footage from the hospital shows the assailants calmly walking through the corridor and entering Mishra's room before opening fire. The attackers managed to flee without resistance.Police officials said the attack appears to be a fallout of inter-gang rivalry. "This is a clear gang war. We are also looking into the failure of the hospital's private security system," said Inspector General (Patna Central Range) Jitendra Rana. The firing has triggered sharp political criticism. Purnea MP Pappu Yadav demanded President's Rule in Bihar, saying, "No one is safe - not doctors, not nurses. This government is shielding criminals."RJD spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari also slammed the Nitish Kumar-led government, alleging that it has "surrendered before crime and criminals."- EndsMust Watch

Is ‘Panchayat' Real Story? Explained Amid Bihar Vidhayak's ‘Marunga' Threat To ‘Sachiv' Goes Viral

Last Updated: An audio clip allegedly features the RJD MLA from Maner scolding a government official for failing to recognise him after hearing his name. In a real-life drama that felt like a scene straight out of the popular web series Panchayat, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MLA Bhai Virendra was reportedly caught in a heated argument with the local panchayat secretary over a call. An audio clip, allegedly featuring their conversation, has now gone viral on the Internet, where the MLA is heard scolding the government official for not recognising him upon knowing his name. The RJD MLA of Maner had called the panchayat secretary to enquire about the death certificate of the husband of a woman named Rinki Devi. But when he failed to recognise Bhai Virendra, things turned tense quickly. 'You don't know Bhai Virendra? You want me to introduce myself? The whole country knows me," he said. Still, the official, now identified as Panchayat Secretary Sandeep Kumar, maintained his composure during the entire conversation. After the incident unfolded, he reportedly filed an FIR against the RJD MLA. This wasn't a one-of-a-kind incident. Heated conversations and tussles have become a routine thing between elected representatives and bureaucrats. Viral Audio Clip Sparks Comparisons To Panchayat's Power Tussle This viral audio has reminded many of the feud between MLA Chandrakishore Singh (Pankaj Jha) and Secretary Abhishek Tripathi (Jitendra Kumar) in Prime Video's web show, Panchayat. Ever since the MLA was introduced into the storyline of the series, he was often seen colliding with Sachiv Ji over various issues in Phulera. Other Instances When Netas Locked Horns With Government Officials The Delhi government, under the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, had often found itself at odds with the Lieutenant Governor's office. They repeatedly found themselves either in the Supreme Court or the High Court over various issues. Over the years, the former Delhi CM has had repeated showdowns with LG VK Saxena over administrative disputes, fund allocations and other government schemes. Meanwhile, back in August 2024, the then Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal came under fire for the way the police handled the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. The Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the CBI when the police failed to make any progress on it. Top BJP leaders accused the police commissioner of covering up the case and even highlighted a similar case that happened in 2013 under his watch. Such conflicts between elected representatives, or netas, and government officials have become a repetitive issue in India's political scenario. While both sides are meant to work together to run the country properly, their differing views and affiliations often put them at loggerheads. Here are some of the reasons why both parties clash from time to time. Political interference: Politicians often attempt to influence administrative decisions, such as transfers or specific rulings in favour of their supporters, to achieve their political goals. Differing objectives: Politicians and government officials have different objectives in a political scenario. While the former have to maintain a good public image to win in elections, the latter have the responsibility to uphold rules and act within the law. Corruption: Some politicians often request and sometimes demand that government officials overlook irregularities or ask for favours, which, when denied, causes friction. Lack of clear role definitions: The lines between the powers and responsibilities of elected representatives and appointed officials are not well-defined, leading to a tussle between the two parties. Power dynamics: The dynamics between elected officials and appointed bureaucrats can be complex, with instances where either side may assert dominance or resist perceived encroachments on their authority. In Bihar's 'Phulera', panchayat secretary takes on MLA, files case after threat

An FIR has been filed against RJD MLA Bhai Virendra in Patna by a panchayat secretary, a day after an audio clip went viral in which the Bihar leader is allegedly heard threatening the his complaint at an SC/ST police station, Sandeep Kumar, the panchayat secretary of Baluwa in Maner, accused the MLA of hurling casteist abuse and issuing spat between the MLA and the panchayat secretary has drawn sharp parallels with scenes from the popular web series 'Panchayat', whose premise hinges on a recurring tussle between the MLA (vidhayak) of Phulera and the panchayat pradhan and the secretary. THE VIRAL AUDIO CLIPNow, coming back to the real said the incident occurred on July 26, when he received a call from Virendra to enquire about the status of a death certificate for one Rinki (the similarities are unmissable here). However, the panchayat secretary failed to recognise the RJD MLA initially during the call, which angered Virendra. The audio clip of the incident has gone viral."You don't know Bhai Virendra? You want me to introduce myself? The whole country knows me," the voice, purportedly of Bhai Virendra, can be heard the panchayat secretary remains unnerved. "If you speak respectfully, I will do the same. I am not scared of you," he says.'JOOTE SE MARUNGA'This left the MLA fuming, who threatened to "beat him with a shoe". The MLA further says, "Joote se maarunga (I will hit you with a shoe) and you can file a case if you want... Anything can happen".After the audio clip surfaced online, the Block Development Officer (BDO) served a showcause notice to the panchayat secretary. Despite the notice, Kumar filed a formal complaint against the RJD acknowledged receiving the complaint and said that appropriate legal action would be taken after an investigation.- EndsMust Watch

A partnership that turned sour, a revenge plot: Inside robbery at ex-NSG commandant's Delhi home

Days after a retired NSG commandant was robbed at gunpoint at his home in Chawri Bazaar, police said four people, including a jewellery businessman, were arrested in the case. According to police, the businessman, Mohammad Kaif, was allegedly miffed after the 86-year-old victim, Bhim Sen — now a diamond and gems artisan — ended their business partnership. The other accused were identified as Aloknath Mishra, 35; Sohail Malik, 23; and Waseem, 48; police said. The incident took place on July 19 when Sen was at his house — which also doubles up as his office — along with his son Sandeep, daughter-in-law Neelam, and grandson. 'A man knocked on the door and called out the name of a family member. As soon as the door was opened, three masked assailants, armed with weapons, forced their way inside,' a police officer had said earlier. When the grandson resisted, one of the masked men took out a gun and tied his hands before taping his mouth, the officer had said. The intruders then looted jewellery and precious stones worth Rs 50 lakh, while also taking $3,550. They locked the family in the kitchen before fleeing. DCP (North) Raja Banthia said, 'Through sustained surveillance and intelligence analysis, it was established that three individuals were involved in the crime. These individuals were observed regrouping near Chawri Bazar Metro Station — two approached through nearby bylanes, while the third arrived in a TSR (three-wheeled scooter rickshaw) after deboarding a Metro train at Rajiv Chowk. Metro data later confirmed that this person had boarded the train from Noida City Centre.' A team led by Sub-Inspector Prashant found the TSR driver. 'The driver confirmed that he had picked up the individual from Connaught Place. The team found that the accused took another train back to Noida City Centre Metro station. He got off and drove away on a scooter,' the DCP said. The scooter was registered in the name of a junior engineer with the New Delhi Municipal Council, who lives in Noida. The engineer told the police that her scooter was being used by her driver, Aloknath Mishra. A trap was laid, and Mishra was arrested on Tuesday. 'Mishra admitted that the robbery had been orchestrated by Kaif as an act of revenge. Kaif hired Mishra, Sohail, and Waseem to execute the plan. Kaif was then arrested from his residence near Jama Masjid and Sohail was arrested from Mustafabad. They admitted that the proceeds of the robbery were with Waseem,' DCP Banthia said. Investigation showed that Waseem fled to Moradabad after the robbery and then went to Sambhal. He then booked a hotel in Roorkee, where he stayed for five days. 'Waseem kept his phone switched off most of the time, switching it on only for a few minutes daily — and always from a location away from his actual place of stay to mislead police. He hid the robbed jewels in Roorkee and was last tracked to Mussoorie,' Banthia said. A trap was laid at Library Chowk in Mussoorie, and the accused was arrested on July 27. Police have recovered the majority of the robbed amount. A police officer said Kaif started doing business with Sen in 2023, and has known him for 20 years. 'Kaif felt that Sen was visiting foreign countries and taking over his clients for his own business. This caused a monetary dispute between the two and led to a fallout,' the officer said.
