Officer shot after several suspects open fire late Fourth of July in Johnson County, officials say
Just before 11 p.m., the department was called to the 1200 block of Sunflower Lane on a report of a suspicious person. When officers arrived, they saw a person who appeared to be carrying a firearm, according to the news release.
Alvarado PD said that when one of the first responding officers tried to engage with the person, an unknown number of suspects opened fire. At least one bullet struck the officer in the neck, police said.
The injured officer was flown from the scene to a Fort Worth hospital, was treated and later released, Alvarado PD said.
The suspects tried to flee the scene. According to Alvarado PD, several armed suspects were taken into custody with the help of local agencies, including the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.
At this time, the suspects' names have not been released, and police are investigating the motive.

Last week, detectives arrested and charged a 26-year-old Joshua Dale Brown with more than 70 offences, including child rape and possession of child abuse material. He was a worker at a childcare centre and had a working with children check. Education Minister Jason Clare has vowed to introduce legislation that would let Canberra cut federal funds to childcare centres that 'aren't up to scratch' on children's safety. 'It has taken too long for governments to act,' he told Seven's Sunrise on Thursday. 'This is sickening and it demands serious action. We've already taken action around mobile phones in childcare centres and mandatory reporting. 'But there's more that we have to do – there's a lot more we have to do.'

Fire destroys home in Aurora; neighbors help family get to safety
Good Samaritans helped save a family from a house fire early Saturday in Aurora, Illinois. The fire started around 3 a.m. in the 1100 block of Pearl Street. A man nearby knocked on the door to make sure everyone got out safe. The home was destroyed in the fire, but no injuries were reported. Neighbors said there were lots of fireworks going off in the area at the time. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The state's largest wildfire of the year has grown to almost 80,000 acres in San Luis Obispo County, resulting in the closure of a nature area, officials said July 5. The Madre Fire broke out shortly after 1 p.m. on July 2 along Highway 166. The blaze resulted in the closure of the Carrizo Plain National Monument, where it is burning, said Andrew Madsen, a spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service. The fire has not claimed any homes, he said. Madsen said the monument is an ecologically sensitive area known for "superblooms" of wildflowers. The area is home to diverse communities of wildlife and plant species including several listed as threatened or endangered, according to a Bureau of Land Management website. The monument area encompasses more than 200,000 acres of land located north of Highway 166 and west of Highway 33. Federal and state officials said the wildfire remains active with wind-driven runs that allow for continued fire growth to the southeast. Hundreds of fire personnel have been involved in the response, a figure that reportedly includes firefighters from Ventura and Kern counties. Firefighters are attacking the blaze with water and retardant, Madsen said. A 15-year-old youth was caught with a loaded handgun on July 3 and arrested on suspicion of numerous firearm violations, Oxnard police said. Officers said they detained the individual with the 9mm weapon around 11 p.m. after attempting to contact a group of individuals in an alley in the 300 block of Cuesta del Mar. The others fled. The address is located north of Hueneme Road and west of Saviers Road in south Oxnard.
