Princess Diana 'hid secret health ordeal' as wedding to Charles took devastating toll

Daily Mirror5 days ago
A young Diana Spencer became a princess 44 years ago today as she married Prince Charles in St Paul's Cathedral, but the night before the wedding, the late Diana became incredibly sick just hours before walking down the aisle
On July 29th 1981, 44 years ago today, a young Diana Spencer became a princess as she tied the knot with the then Prince Charles in St Paul's Cathedral in London. And while the momentous wedding was a joyous occasion for royal fans everywhere, it appears Diana was struggling with her reality behind the scenes.

At the time of her wedding, Diana had only recently celebrated her 20th birthday, and as she admitted ten years later to journalist Andrew Morton, she became incredibly sick the night before the big day, as she suffered 'a very bad fit of bulimia' just hours before walking down the aisle.

Between 1991 and 1992, Diana recorded tapes for Morton, which were the main source of his best-selling authorised biography, Diana: Her True Story. In the tapes, Diana revealed the extent of her secret health battle.
'I ate everything I could possibly find, which amused my sister, and nobody understood what was going on there,' said Diana. 'It was very hush-hush. I was as sick as a parrot that night. It was such an indication of what was going on.'
When Diana found it hard to sleep the night before the big day, she recalled going downstairs at Clarence House where she spotted a bicycle belonging to the Queen Mother's Steward, William Tallon.

Diana leapt on it and cycled around in circles, ringing the bell and singing: 'I'm going to marry the Prince of Wales tomorrow!' Despite her excitement the evening before her nuptials, her mindset had changed when morning broke.
'I was very, very calm, deathly calm,' said Diana. 'I felt I was a lamb to the slaughter. I knew it and couldn't do anything about it. My last night of freedom was with Jane at Clarence House.
'I remember being so in love with my husband that I couldn't take my eyes off him. He was going to look after me. Well, was I wrong on that assumption? I realised I had taken on an enormous role but had no idea what I was going into - but no idea.'

Diana's pre-wedding illness wasn't the only thing the bride-to-be was contending with the night before the big day, as according to a friend of Diana's, she was left devastated by a confession by Charles as he "did not want to go into the marriage on a false promise".
Speaking on ITV documentary The Diana Interview: Revenge Of A Princess, she said: "One of the most shocking things that Diana told me was that the night before the wedding Charles told her that he didn't love her...

'I think Charles didn't want to go into the wedding on a false premise. He wanted to square it with her and it was devastating for Diana. She didn't want to go through with the wedding at that point, she thought about not attending the wedding.'
The wedding went ahead as planned, although in a book about Camilla called The Duchess: The Untold Story, royal author Penny Junor claims Charles believed the wedding was a mistake but knew it was too late to pull out.
She writes: "Charles was not convinced he was doing the right thing in marrying Diana but there was no way out and, bolstered by the hope that things would be different once they were married, he put a brave face on it."
Charles and Diana married in front of 3,500 guests at St Paul's Cathedral in London, with a record-breaking 750 million people in 74 countries across the globe tuning in to watch the event on television. They then separated in 1992 before finalising their divorce in 1996.

Love Island is hit by new fix row as fans claim they've 'worked out' who will be dumped from the villa

Love Island has been hit by a fresh 'fix' row, after fans claimed that they've worked out which couple will be dumped from the villa. In footage that is set to air on Sunday night, an unexpected couple will be asked to leave the villa, as all of this year's former Islanders make a surprise return. Sources had previously claimed that the couple was chosen after many former Islanders began to 'question the interity' of their connection, but the dumped pair has not yet been revealed. An insider told The Sun: 'This couple have been a big part of this series so this is a shocking moment. 'But having watched it back, ex- Islanders have become privy to action they weren't fully aware of and it left them more than questioning the integrity of this connection.' Now fans are convinced that despite a huge row in Friday's episode, Meg and Dejon will keep their places in the villa, having already been saved once over fan favourites Megan and Conor. Taking to social media, fans expressed their disbelief that the seemingly incompatible couple were receiving more votes than other islanders. Addressing the ITV show's official X account, one fan fumed: 'FIX - you dumped the most natural compatible warm couple Conor and Megan and kept in devious Dejon and Fatal Attraction Meg just for the ratings. Its a fix love island [sic].' Others agreed, writing: 'No sorry but love island. If they don't dump Meg and Dijon on Sunday I know it's 1000% a fix. 'No ex islander in their right might wouldn't vote for Meg and Dijon. They know how the public feel. It'll be you that's told them not to vote for them.'; 'Love Island this is a f**king fix. All of them are going to target our Queens. Leaving Dejon and Meg to the finals.'; 'The ex islanders are obvs not going to vote Meg and Dejon out. This is a fix.' This is not the first time that the current season of the show has come under fire for seemingly being unfair. One fan joked: 'the only way to fix love island atp is to stop all the public votes, stop the islanders from being able to save each other, and giving me and my friends the power to choose.' Now fans are convinced that despite a huge row in Friday's episode, Meg and Dejon will keep their places in the villa, having already been saved over fan favourites Megan and Conor The allegations come amid reports that the show is experiencing its lowest ever ratings, bringing in one million viewers that have since decreased in number from its opening episode. This is a significant drop from the 2.5 million fans who tuned into the 2021 season and the 2.4 million who watched the opening episode in 2022. Former Love Island winner Amber Gill speculated that the show has been losing popularity because of easily offended viewers. Amber fumed: 'I've just seen articles about a girl saying someone's too glamorous for a 9-5 and everyone's like, "You can't say that!' I need everyone to get several grips." 'No wonder they come f**ing media trained, because God forbid you say anything out of line. 'I remember some of the s*** I said and trust me, I say worse in private!'

This Morning's Martin Frizzell says Schofield scandal 'helped' amid Fiona's Alzheimer's

TV presenter Fiona Phillips was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's back in 2022 and the pair recently opened up about dealing with the disease in their candid new book This Morning boss Martin Frizell has said that the Phillip Schofield drama "helped" him while dealing with Fiona Phillips' Alzheimer's diagnosis. He recently said that the drama at work gave him something else to focus on while things were all go at home. ‌ Fiona was 61-years-old when she was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's in 2022. Since then, husband Martin has been by her side caring for her. ‌ Martin talked about how he has coped in his wife's new memoir, Remember When: My Life With Alzheimer's, which Martin co-wrote along with journalist friend Alison Phillips. It comes after John Torode's wife Lisa Faulkner breaks her silence after his MasterChef sacking. ‌ During the diagnosis, Martin was also dealing with some drama while working at This Morning. However, he said that this managed to take "his mind off Fiona at home". In 2023, This Morning's Phillip resigned after more than 20 years on the programme after having an affair with a younger colleague. Co-host Holly Willoughby then resigned later after being informed by police of a plot to kill her. Martin has said that due to being busy at work, it gave him some "structure and normality". Speaking in the book, Martin wrote: "I was busy with work at that time. We'd had big changes at This Morning with Phillip Schofield leaving, Holly Willoughby stepping down after the pressures of a serious kidnap threat, and Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard becoming the new hosts in March 2024. ‌ "It meant there was a lot to sort out to make the show the best it possibly could be, but being that busy actually helped me. I loved going into work – not because it was an escape from what was going on at home, but because it gave me structure and normality. "And it meant that I didn't have time to think about what was to come for Fiona. For both of us." While this was going on, Martin shared that Fiona's "long-term memory was functioning better than the short-term" but she found it difficult to leave the house due to becoming more anxious. Martin quit This Morning a year after the This Morning scandal after first joining in 2014 as editor of Loose Women before taking over at This Morning. ‌ In a statement last November, he said: "Next year I'm expecting my family priorities to change so I need to free up time for them. I love my team at ITV and will miss them and the thrill of live telly but it's an always on, 24 hours a day, seven days a week commitment and I won't be able to do both. It's been a privilege to lead truly great presenters and producers, between us we've turned out more than six thousand hours of live topical telly, that's around 20,000 items and the gongs are always nice." Martin discusses in the book at Fiona is now unable to "brush her teeth, shower and use her phone" without his help. He said that his wife "wouldn't know how to turn the kettle on now" and now "sits and stares for most of the day".
