Hughes reveals why trio missed Blues' win at Harrogate
The Blues were without Gabe Breeze, Josh Grant and Georgie Kelly in Yorkshire as well as others who have been sidelined for longer.
Head coach Hughes said Breeze was ill, Grant suffered a knock in training while with Kelly the Cumbrians are simply trying to manage the striker's workload.
First-choice keeper Breeze missed out on Saturday as Harry Lewis played the full game in goal and earned a solid clean sheet.
On Breeze, Hughes said: 'We're hoping it's just a viral thing.
'He was under the weather the other night at South Shields [last Tuesday's 2-1 win].
'He hasn't been in the club since. So we're just trying to get the bottom of it. It's a sore throat or whatever, so it sounds like it's a little bit viral.'

Hughes said the illness had not affected anyone else at the club. 'I think it's just an individual thing,' added the Blues boss.

The head coach, meanwhile, stressed there was nothing serious behind midfielder Grant and striker Kelly's absences.
'Josh got a bang on his knee in training, so he missed out,' said Hughes of the midfielder.
'With Georgie, he got 60 minutes at South Shields. He was only down to do 45, but he felt good, so we gave him the 60 and then thought we'd err on the side of safety again [after that], because he has missed a couple of weeks in the early start of the pre-season.

'So, that's all. He's available.'
Cameron Harper, who was not involved in the South Shields game, returned as a substitute at Harrogate.
But Carlisle remained without the likes of Stephen Wearne, Jordan Jones, Morgan Feeney, Jake Allan and Sam Hetherington, who have all had injury issues.

Liverpool 'to make formal offer' for Alexander Isak this week as £65.5m Luis Diaz transfer is agreed
Liverpool have agreed a deal that is expected to help fund a bid for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. The Reds have already bolstered their attack with the signing of Hugo Ekitike but remain interested in bringing Isak, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season, to the club this summer. Despite approaching Newcastle over signing of the Sweden international for around £120million, the reigning champions of England were quickly told that the striker was not for sale. However, the transfer saga took a stunning twist last week when Isak asked to leave Newcastle and was subsequently left out of the squad that travelled to Asia for the pre-season tour. Now, the Magpies are bracing themselves for a formal offer from Liverpool for Isak this week. According to reports, the Merseyside giants have been given the green light to launch a bid for the striker as Luis Diaz's exit is imminent. Liverpool have agreed to sell the Colombia international to Bayern Munich for a fee said to be in the region of £65.5m. The money from the sale is expected to fund a bid for Isak. While the message from the Newcastle hierarchy has been they want to keep their best players, if Liverpool's offer approaches £150m mark and Isak pushes to leave St James' Park then that stance could soften. Regardless of the outcome, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is well aware his side must strengthen after missing out on a number of key targets - including Ekitike. Speaking after the pre-season defeat to Arsenal on Sunday, he said: 'We're not deluded. We know we need to bring players in. 'We've known that for a long time. Liverpool's next signing is starting to unveil and it's not Alexander Isak. Of course the Swede is still a priority target for the Reds. But his saga could drag on for a while. This doesn't mean that Liverpool won't sign him, merely that given it's a deal of huge magnitude, it's going to take a long time to iron out the details. With Joe Gomez travelling back home from pre-season due to an injury, it has exposed a great need at centre-back for the Reds. Liverpool have already lost Jarell Quansah this summer, and they now have just two senior centre-back on tour in pre-season in Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk. This has seen Slot play Luca Stephenson, Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas at centre-back. It's becoming very apparent after the four goals conceded against AC Milan that this situation is not tenable going into the season. Liverpool need more depth in the centre-back positions, especially considering Konate and Gomez are both injury prone. This is therefore the obvious next transfer Hughes is going to sort out. And while the first name everyone will gravitate to is Marc Guehi, he might not be the clear choice. In fact, Liverpool may already be targeting someone else in the position, who could be an even better fit.
