Colorado coach Deion Sanders declines to address health issues at Big 12 media days
Since overseeing Colorado's spring game April 19, Sanders hadn't attended football camps in Boulder. The school had said last month, amid reports that the coach was ill, that it could not say why he was absent from those camps. Sanders did not specifically answer any lingering questions. 'I'm looking good. I'm living lovely. God has truly blessed me,' he said. 'Not a care in the world. Not a want or desire in the world.'
Sanders was the last of the league's 16 coaches to take the podium on the main stage over two days at the headquarters of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys, which is about 75 miles from a massive ranch the Pro Football Hall of Fame player has in Canton, Texas. While commending the work of Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark in his opening remarks, Sanders said that Yormark called him daily to check to make sure he was getting better. There have also been a lot of calls from his fellow league coaches. 'I love them; they've been calling and checking on me, making sure I'm straight,' Sanders said.
This will be Sanders' first season at Colorado without having one of his sons on the team. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders was a fifth-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in the NFL draft, and safety Shilo Sanders signed with Tampa Bay as an undrafted free agent. Also gone is Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, the two-way standout who played for Sanders at Jackson State and Colorado and will now try to play both ways in the NFL with Jacksonville.
Sanders is 13-12 in his two seasons with the Buffaloes, who, in their return to the Big 12 last season, missed making the league championship game on a tiebreaker after being one of four teams to finish 7-2 in conference play. He is under contract with the Buffaloes through the 2029 season after agreeing to a new $54 million five-year deal this spring that made him the Big 12's highest-paid coach. That replaced the final three years of the $29.5 million five-year deal he got when he arrived from Jackson State.

Pedro Pagés had a two-out bases-loaded single in the third to drive in two, and Victor Scott II followed with an RBI single to get the Cardinals to 6-5. Atlanta third baseman Austin Riley left after three innings with what the team said was abdominal tightness. Key moment: Burlson drew a walk leading off the seventh against Austin Cox before Contreras greeted replacement Rafael Montero with a single. Montero retired the next three to keep it 6-5. Key stat: The Braves beat the Cardinals for the 1000th time but trail by 106 wins in the all-time series–with 18 ties. Mariners' cal raleigh breaks al record with 38 homers before the all-star break
Cal Raleigh hit his 37th and 38th home runs in Seattle's 12-3 victory over Detroit on Friday night to move within one of Barry Bonds's 2001 major league record for homers before the All-Star break. Raleigh hit a solo homer off former teammate Tyler Holton in the eighth to tie the American League record of 37 set by Reggie Jackson in 1969 and matched by Chris Davis in 2013. '(Holton) and I are really good friends and I've caught a lot of his pitches,' said Raleigh, who was in the lineup as the designated hitter instead of at catcher. 'I don't think that helped much but I'm sure he's not very happy with me.' Raleigh hit a grand slam off Brant Hurter in the ninth. 'I didn't even know it was a record until just now,' Raleigh said. 'I don't have words for it I guess. I'm just very grateful and thankful.' Seattle has two games left in Detroit before the break. 'Cal Raleigh… this is just unbelievable,' Mariners manager Dan Wilson said. 'He's already set the AL record and now he's only one short of Barry. There are two games so who knows?' Raleigh hit 10 homers in March and April, 12 in May, 11 in June and has five in July. 'This is a very boring comment but baseball is all about consistency,' Wilson said. 'This hasn't been one hot streak; he's doing this month after month. That says everything.'

Twins shortstop Carlos Correa sprains ankle when baserunner slides into him at 2nd
Minnesota Twins shortstop Carlos Correa had to be helped off the field after injuring his right ankle when Pittsburgh's Tommy Pham slid into him at second base. Pham was trying to get to second on his liner off the wall in right field in the seventh inning of the Twins' 2-1 victory Friday night. Right fielder DaShawn Keirsey Jr.'s throw beat Pham, whose batting helmet made contact with Correa's lower leg. Correa rolled over and stayed on the ground before leaving the game. Brooks Lee moved from second base to shortstop to replace Correa. The team said Correa had a mild ankle sprain. The 30-year-old Correa is already in his 11th big league season and has been a mainstay at shortstop for the Twins since signing as a free agent in 2022. He missed about half of last season with a concussion and a plantar fascia injury – the latter of which kept him from playing in the All-Star Game after he was chosen for the third time.
