Capitalising on Ramadan's digital shift towards Connected TV

Campaign ME05-03-2025
Ramadan in the MENA region is marked by a significant surge in digital content consumption, presenting a unique opportunity for brands and advertisers. Recent data indicates a shift in viewing habits towards Connected TV. New key trends are shaping Ramadan's advertising & video consumption landscape reinforcing how businesses can maximise their engagement during the holy month.
Connected TV: The dominant screen in Ramadan
Earlier this month, research found that over half of respondents in the UAE, Saudi Arabia & Egypt will spend more time streaming content on Connected TV, compared to traditional TV during Ramadan. A similar trend is observed with viewers on YouTube. Around the world, viewers are watching over 1 billion hours of YouTube content on television daily and it's more interactive and includes formats like Shorts, podcasts, and live streams, right alongside the sports, food, drama and comedy series people already love.
In 2023, global views of Shorts on connected TVs more than doubled and more than forty of YouTube's top 100 channels globally by watch time have TV as their most watched screen. It's also a great opportunity for brands. According to Analytic Partners ROI Genome, two out of three brands delivered higher ROI by YouTube than TV globally.
This is also true in the MENA region, where YouTube reached over 12 million people in Saudi Arabia, 600,000 in Qatar and over 2.5 million people in the UAE over the age of 18 on connected TV.
Our growth on connected TVs is also attracting new advertisers and we continue to introduce formats that work particularly well on the big screen, like QR codes and pause ads. This shift provides brands with a strategic advantage, enabling them to reach engaged audiences beyond conventional broadcasting in a way that is truly multiscreen & multiformat through YouTube. YouTube's reach on Connected TV in the region, with figures exceeding 12 million viewers in Saudi Arabia alone, underscores its pivotal role in this evolving landscape.
Ramadan content trends: From culinary inspiration to spiritual dialogue
In Ramadan last year, we saw a surge in self-improvement content with creators offering guidance on personal growth and setting goals with creators like Duaa Allan and Salma Rashwan helping their viewers with their journey.
We also saw a growing interest in podcasts with channels like Thmanyah's Finjaan capturing the ears and minds of many YouTube viewers. Last year, Thmanyah's most watched episode, released in 2022 focused on succeeding in relationships and was viewed over 136 million times on YouTube.
Needless to say, cooking content like Abir's engaging content, Ramadan prep and entertainment remain staples of the content journey. For example, last year's Benefit Cosmetic's Ramadan Kitchen brought together top lifestyle creators Noor Stars, Beeko, Raghda & Sara Alwari in a series of cooking challenges which racked up over 11.7 million views on YouTube.
Gen-Z engagement with creator-driven content on YouTube
In Saudi Arabia, a Kantar survey found that Gen-Z viewers chose YouTube as their favorite platform to watch a variety of video types (40 per cent creator & influencer produced content). And 85 per cent of GenZ viewers in the United Arab Emirates share their favorite YouTube creators' content with others. This underscores the power of authentic storytelling in engaging younger demographics and the presence of true fandom.
Brands can leverage YouTube's partnership Ads on YouTube to integrate content they worked with a creator on, into an Ad. Kantar research also found that 84 per cent of viewers in the UAE & 86 per cent of viewers in Saudi Arabia agree that YouTube helps them decide on a purchase, there is a great opportunity to creatively reach your audience using multiple formats & across different screens.
The multiscreen, multiformat, co-viewing opportunity during Ramadan 2025
In the UAE, a Kantar survey revealed that 60 per cent of viewers watch YouTube with friends, family & others, and an 95 per cent of Ipsos survey respondents report heightened attention during co-viewing YouTube on TV screens.
This communal aspect is equally strong in Saudi Arabia, where 93 per cent of viewers express excitement about watching and sharing YouTube content, surpassing the competitive average. Notably, 75 per cent of Gen Z viewers in Saudi Arabia are more likely to consider brands advertised on YouTube, highlighting the platform's power to influence purchase decisions within this shared viewing context.
This combination of multiscreen accessibility, diverse content formats, and the impact of communal viewing creates a unique opportunity for brands to connect with audiences on a deeper level. By aligning with the spirit of Ramadan, brands can not only capture attention but also build lasting relationships and achieve significant impact during this crucial season on Youtube.

Franklin Templeton campaign marks 25 years, recommits to the Middle East

Franklin Templeton, a global leader in asset management, has revealed its integrated marketing campaign to mark its 25th anniversary in the Middle East. The integrated campaign was rolled out in the form of radio spots, out-of-home advertising such as on the Dubai tram, print media – including prominent regional publications such as The National, Gulf News and Khaleej Times – as well as across social media and YouTube content. Beyond highlighting the brand's presence in the UAE since 2000, and in DIFC since 2004, the campaign also aimed to reaffirm Franklin Templeton's brand promise of being 'Your trusted partner for what's ahead'. Balaji Vaidyanathan, Head of Marketing for Central & Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa (CEEMEA) at Franklin Templeton, said, 'This isn't just about trust; it's about looking forward and being dedicated to the future of investment in this vibrant landscape. We weren't just looking back at our history, but also as a testament to our continuous evolution and innovation within the region. Beyond celebrating our history, the campaign was about reaffirming our commitment across the Middle East.' Franklin Templeton multi-channel campaign roll out While the creatives and video content for Franklin Templeton's campaigns were produced in-house by its dedicated team, the brand partnered with specialised agencies for various aspects of the rollout. The radio spot was developed in collaboration with ARN ABC – Arabian Radio Network to ensure the message resonated effectively on air. For the highly visible tram campaign, the brand partnered with Info Media Group. 'This blend of in-house expertise and strategic agency partnerships allowed us to maintain creative control while leveraging external specialists for their specific channel proficiency,' Vaidyanathan added. The Franklin Templeton campaign leaned into a mix of channels to boost visibility, maximise impact and audience engagement. Vaidyanathan explained, 'For print media, we began by partnering with prominent regional publications such as Khaleej Times and Gulf News to secure front-page advertisements, leveraging their credibility and visibility to reach our target audience effectively.' He added, 'Our digital campaign utilised programmatic advertising on platforms such as DV360. The impressive viewability rates, significantly exceeding industry benchmarks of 50 per cent to 60 per cent, demonstrated that our ads were effectively placed and captured audience attention, successfully driving them to our dedicated campaign landing page.' Complementing this, Franklin Templeton's impact buys with Khaleej Times and The National yielded high click-through rates (CTR), indicating strong audience engagement and effective messaging. Franklin Templeton also leveraged social media, particularly LinkedIn, to publish a mix of static and video content, which also surpassed industry benchmarks for engagement, thanks in part to its employee brand ambassador programme. Vaidyanathan said, 'This initiative was designed to capture the attention of our target audience in a highly visible and memorable way within a key urban area.' He added, 'This integrated, multi-channel approach ensured that the campaign resonated across various touchpoints, significantly enhancing both our visibility and engagement with the diverse audience in the UAE and the wider region. Franklin Templeton is focusing primarily on the UAE for this campaign, given its long-standing presence and commitment to this key market. Success metrics of the campaign Franklin Templeton defined a range of metrics to define the campaign's success, which fell into three main categories. First, the brand looked at consideration metrics, which included engagement on ads – specifically click-through rates (CTR) and view-through rates (VTR) – as well as visits to the campaign page and the time spent there. This helped the brand understand how well the campaign content resonated with our audience. Vaidyanathan said, 'A key video created for YouTube captured viewers' attention, far exceeded the industry benchmark for skippable ads on YouTube, which is 40 per cent to 50 percent, demonstrating its ability to captivate viewers. The campaign also targeted financial professionals through B2B publishers such as Citywire. Additionally, we ran targeted radio ads on Dubai Eye during peak commute times and launched an out-of-home advertising initiative with a branded tram in Dubai Marina.' The brand also tracked awareness metrics, including the total number of impressions, reach, frequency, video views and circulation for print ads. These metrics gave the brand insight into how broadly the campaign was seen and how often our audience was exposed to it. 'Additionally, we monitored channel-specific metrics. For our digital campaign, this meant tracking impressions, clicks, CTR, and viewability rate for both programmatic and impact buys. On LinkedIn, we looked at impressions, CTR and VTR. On YouTube, we tracked impressions, views, and VTR. For print ads, we considered daily average circulation, total readership per copy, and opportunity to see (OTS),' Vaidyanathan added. By using these metrics, the brand aimed to reinforce Franklin Templeton's reputation as a trusted partner and leader in the Middle East's investment sector. The campaign is scheduled to run for a duration of three months, from July to September 2025.

30% rise in mobile food delivery orders in the UAE & Saudi Arabia during H1

Recent data from Syrve MENA, a leading restaurant software provider in the Middle East, reveals that the first half of 2025 brought about a substantial shift in consumer behaviour in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. According to Syrve MENA data, food aggregators continue to be the most popular mobile order channel in both markets. Approximately 75% of mobile orders placed by surveyed restaurants are processed by apps like HungerStation, Talabat, and Deliveroo. The remaining 25% is handled by call centres, proprietary apps, and websites run by restaurants — a tactic that larger chains seeking greater control over operational procedures can afford. Syrve MENA reported that the majority of orders come from mobile devices. More than 70% of all food delivery transactions are made through mobile phones, reflecting the region's preference for digital convenience. While it is challenging to accurately estimate the increase in mobile orders in H1 2025 compared to 2024, Talabat reports a 30% year-over-year increase in Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) in Q1, which may indicate a significant rise in order volume in H1 2025. Revenue and adjusted EBITDA both grew by 34%, while adjusted net income rose by 24%. Seasonal trends and daily delivery patterns Syrve MENA reported that mobile delivery activity in the UAE reached its first peak in March 2025, coinciding with Ramadan, a time traditionally associated with increased food ordering. Another seasonal surge is expected between June and September, when high temperatures make outdoor dining less appealing and consumers turn to delivery more often. The time slot from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM consistently yields the highest volume of mobile delivery orders across most restaurant categories. For fast food, Italian, Indian, and international restaurant chains, this evening window is the most popular. However, Arabic food exhibits a distinct trend, with traditional breakfast items driving the highest delivery activity between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM. Popular dishes range from kebabs in Arabic restaurants to rotis and butter naan in Indian chains. In the global H1 2025 market, the most popular time for food ordering is generally 6:00 PM local time, according to restaurant industry reports. Additionally, there's a noticeable increase in breakfast orders, particularly on Monday mornings. The later evening peak in orders observed in the UAE and Saudi Arabia may be linked to Ramadan, when evening meals shift to after sunset. UAE vs. Saudi Arabia: Comparing the Markets Despite differences in scale and speed, both the UAE and Saudi Arabia are experiencing mobile-driven growth. Through 2033, the UAE's online meal delivery industry is anticipated to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.2%, driven by consumer demands for convenience, speed, and loyalty benefits. The Saudi Arabian market is significantly larger and is projected to grow at a 15.4% CAGR through 2030. This surge is primarily driven by urbanisation, advanced digital infrastructure including widespread internet access and smartphone usage, and a growing middle class with increasing disposable income and preference for digital convenience. Mobile-based delivery will remain central to foodservice strategy in both the UAE and Saudi Arabia as they continue to develop digitally and increase mobile order volumes by over 10% year-on-year. Consistent seasonal peaks, changing spending habits, and rapidly advancing technology are making mobile-first dining the new norm, said Alexander Ponomarev, CEO at Syrve MENA. According to reports, as mobile order volumes continue to grow steadily and consumers demand digital convenience, forecasts predict that the share of mobile-based orders will exceed 80% in both markets by the end of 2025. This trend is further fueled by high digital penetration, making the digital transformation of the food delivery market inevitable. The dominance of food aggregators and restaurants' increasing drive toward process automation are also contributing to this shift. Source: Syrve MENA
