Special sermon calls for loyalty to the King to ensure nation's continued progress
The sermon, delivered nationwide during Friday prayers and broadcast live on TV1 today, emphasised that unity, peace, and mutual respect are essential foundations for national prosperity.
'It is our duty to safeguard the peace and unity that have long been established, and to abandon any actions that could disrupt this harmony.
'With the reign of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, may the five principles of Rukun Negara - Belief in God, Loyalty to the King and Country, Supremacy of the Constitution, the Rule of Law, and Courtesy and Morality - remain deeply rooted in the hearts of all Malaysians,' the sermon read.
The sermon, titled Dirgahayu Tuanku: Raja dikasihi, Negara Diberkati (Long Live the King: A Beloved Monarch, A Blessed Nation), was prepared by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and delivered by the Grand Imam of Masjid Negara, Ehsan Mohd Hosni.
On Malaysia's system of Constitutional Monarchy and Parliamentary Democracy, the sermon praised the structure as one that blends wisdom in governance with tradition, law, and Islamic values - a testament to Malaysia's unique and fortunate national identity.
It stressed that Islam holds in high regard leadership that is just, compassionate, and rooted in integrity, especially one that is merciful towards all citizens.
In Malaysia's context, the sermon also reminded the public that the King serves not only as the Head of State but also as the Head of Islam for Penang, Melaka, Sabah, Sarawak, and the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Labuan.
'The institution of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is not merely symbolic but represents a divine trust bestowed by Allah. The King's role aligns with the concept of Ulil Amri - an authority to be obeyed as long as it does not contradict the teachings of Islam,' it added.
The sermon also highlighted the Islamic principle of mutual respect and loyalty between rulers and the people, emphasising that this reciprocal relationship is grounded in love, justice, and a shared commitment to Allah.
'This mutual prayerful connection reflects the closeness between the ruler and the people. It mirrors the concept of ukhuwah Islamiah (Islamic brotherhood), which stresses compassion and cooperation in society,' the sermon concluded, describing this bond as a model of ideal leadership and citizenry.

Opposition to provide legal support for anti-Anwar demonstrators
KUALA LUMPUR: The Opposition said it would provide legal assistance to any civil servants facing action for participating in the upcoming "Turun Anwar" rally, scheduled for Saturday. Pendang member of parliament Datuk Awang Solahuddin Hashim said legal support would be extended to those who face action for taking part in the rally. "I want to emphasise that if any civil servant faces action (for joining the rally), we will provide them with lawyers," he said when debating the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) 2023 Annual Report and Financial Statements in the Dewan Rakyat today. Awang said this after Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) reminded civil servants not to participate in the opposition-organised rally. Awang said Article 10 of the Federal Constitution guarantees citizens the right to free speech and peaceful assembly. On Sunday (July 20), Shamsul Azri said civil servants must adhere to the pledge enshrined in the Rukun Negara. "They cannot attend. Civil servants recite the pledge every day, every week. The Rukun Negara includes the principle of loyalty to the king and country... Have they forgotten? Be loyal to the king and country," he said. Yesterday, the AGC in a statement said civil servants who participate in the rally may face disciplinary action for breaching civil service regulations. The AGC stressed that civil servants are bound by the pledge outlined in the Public Officers (Appointment, Promotion and Termination of Service) Regulations 2012, as well as the Public Officers (Conduct and Discipline) Regulations 1993.

Free rides on Penang ferries on Aug 31, Sept 15 and 16
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Port Commission (SPPP) has announced free ferry services for Malaysians on Aug 31 as well as Sept 15 and 16 in conjunction with National Day and Malaysia Day. SPPP chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the initiative supports the announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, particularly the move to declare an extra public holiday on Sept 15 in conjunction with the Malaysia Day celebration, which will be held at the PICCA Convention Centre in Butterworth on Sept 16. "The free ferry service offered on these three important dates reflects SPPP's commitment as the Port Authority and Regulatory Body, along with Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) as the port operator, in encouraging Malaysians to use public transport when commemorating key national events. "In addition, this initiative will also help ease the burden on Malaysians," he said in a statement on Thursday (July 24).
