MP reviews underpass proposal at G Corner on Trichy-Chennai NH

Trichy: Trichy MP Durai Vaiko on Monday reviewed the proposal for a new vehicular underpass (VuP) at G Corner here on Trichy-Chennai National Highway (NH) passing through industrialized areas. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He discussed the status of the underpass with officials National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and during the meeting. "The new VuP proposal at G Corner to prevent fatal accidents is making steady progress. The extent of railway land required for the project has been identified, and further developments to launch the construction work as early as possible were discussed," Trichy MP told TOI. While 3,100sqm of railway land was initially estimated to be required for the new infrastructure, the land requirements will be finalised while preparing a detailed project report (DPR). The participants also discussed the alignment of the VuP and a new service road, creating an easy approach for the the Ponmalai railway workshop and adjoining residential settlements. Through new VuP, vehicles from service roads on both sides of the NH can access institutions and commercial establishments through the underpass and vehicles can ply on the highway without any interruption from the local traffic. Presently, as service roads on both sides of the NH between G Corner and TVS Tollgate are not connected, commuters approach the highway in opposite directions, leading to accidents.

Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami (file photo) Reflecting on 25 years since Uttarakhand's formation in 2000, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami emphasised the pivotal role women played in reshaping the state's economy. In an exclusive interview with the Times of India, Uttarakhand's CM, Pushkar Singh Dhami highlighted women becoming the backbone of Uttarakhand's grassroots entrepreneurship. "I have visited all 13 districts and met with women involved in various enterprises. We organised 'Nari Shakti Vandan' festivals and I saw first-hand the talent and strength they possess," he said. 25 Years of Pride & Progress : CM Pushkar Singh Dhami on Uttarakhand's Journey Dhami noted women's contribution in the production of millet-based products, temple prasad, traditional embroidery, locally-made toys, and sustainable goods that are both preserving cultural identity and generating income. He added that these efforts are creating self-reliant communities and enabling women to lead economically independent lives. Reaffirming Prime Minister Narendra Modi's confidence in the state's future, Dhami recalled his speech from his 2021 Kedarnath visit. Taliban Calling

Times of India's Edit Page team comprises senior journalists with wide-ranging interests who debate and opine on the news and issues of the day. The extremist regime wants tourists. Why shouldn't it? It's part of the normalisation of brutality Kim Jong Un last month posed on a beach, surfing on the 'wave of happiness' that North Korea's Dear Leader has promised tourists visiting the newly developed Wonsan Kalma coastal tourist zone. The dictator wants more international tourists. So far, small Russian groups are the only package deal North Korea receives. This month, it's Taliban's turn to invite tourists to Afghanistan. Wonsan Kalma and Afghanistan are beautiful places. But they are not on tourists maps for good reason. Taliban's ad is made by a tour operator. It starts with a familiar chilling scene of beheadings: men, heads covered, kneeling in front of gun-wielding, presumably, Afghans. Only here, the headcover is yanked off to reveal a grinny White male flashing a thumbs-up sign. A flower tucked in the barrel of a machine gun, a close-up of an M4 rifle with 'property of US govt' etched, the 50-second ad flits between making light of Taliban as people who terrorised to stunning footage of Afghanistan. It is as extraordinarily tone-deaf as many of Trump's Truth Social posts. Taliban meanwhile is intensifying its war against Afghan women. Banned from work and education, they're publicly flogged, refused healthcare unless a male relative's present, and their movement is fully restricted. Heavily sanctioned Taliban wants tourists to earn some hard cash. But to make a beheading scene part of a promotion targeted at Americans is a cold measure of how normalised brutality is. Will Americans go, though their govt says don't? Undoubtedly. Indifference to violence is global culture, the unthinkable is routinely normalised. So, for a certain section, what could thrill more than swinging an M4 or Kalashnikov at Afghanistan's majestic peaks? Reality and rights & wrongs can take a vacation.
