Four arrested, RM64,500 drugs seized in Penang, Kedah raids
The arrests were made between 4pm on Sunday and 5am yesterday by a team from the state Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID), following intelligence gathered on the syndicate's activities, believed to have been active since May.
Acting state police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said three suspects, aged between 32 and 61, were detained at a vehicle parking lot in Seberang Jaya, where police discovered 10 compressed packets of dried leaves believed to be ganja, hidden in two canvas bags in the car boot.
"The total weight of the seized ganja from the first raid was 9,920g, with an estimated street value of RM53,500," he said in a statement today.
Acting on leads from the initial arrests, police conducted a follow-up raid in Gurun, Kedah, where another man was arrested.
Alwi said further inspection led to the discovery of a gunny sack containing seven packets of suspected ganja weighing 6,995g, four packets of heroin (30.34g), and three packets of syabu (3.45g).
"The combined volume of drugs seized is sufficient for about 35,000 uses," added Alwi.
Urine screenings revealed that three of the suspects tested positive for methamphetamine, while the fourth tested positive for a combination of amphetamine, methamphetamine, ketamine and morphine.
Alwi said all four had prior records of criminal and drug-related offences.
The suspects have been remanded for seven days from yesterday until July 27 to assist in investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment and whipping of not less than 12 strokes upon conviction.
As part of asset forfeiture measures under the Dangerous Drugs (Forfeiture of Property) Act 1988, police also seized a Perodua Rusa valued at RM11,000.
The total value of the drug haul and seized assets is estimated at RM64,500.
Alwi reaffirmed the police's commitment to eradicating drug distribution networks, adding that joint efforts with other enforcement agencies would continue in a bid to strengthen intelligence sharing and enforcement actions.

Customs seizes cannabis flowers worth over RM10mil in Rantau Panjang
KOTA BARU: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department has foiled attempts to smuggle in 102.178kg of cannabis flowers worth more than RM10mil. Kelantan Customs director Wan Jamal Abdul Salam Wan Long said the seizures were made during operations at the Rantau Panjang Duty-Free Zone on April 23. He said in a statement issued on Monday (July 28) that the first seizure involved 88 transparent plastic packets containing cannabis flowers placed in three bags found at Gate 1 of the zone at about 10.30am. He said the second seizure was from a woman motorcyclist who was found carrying a bag with 32 transparent plastic packets with similar contents. "The woman led the Customs team to the Rantau Panjang Express Bus Stop at 11am, where we arrested a man and a woman after finding two bags containing 60 transparent plastic packets containing cannabis flowers," he added. He said that in all, six bags containing 180 packets of cannabis flowers weighing more than 100kg and estimated to be worth RM10,013,444 were seized. "The syndicate's modus operandi was to smuggle cannabis flowers through illegal bases along Sungai Golok, before bringing them into the zone. "All the suspects arrested are locals aged between 30 and 45. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952," he said. – Bernama

Kuala T'ganu bank officer cheated of RM240,000 in vehicle purchase scam
KUALA TERENGGANU: A bank officer has been left devastated after losing RM241,700, including his Employees Provident Fund (EPF) savings, in an online vehicle purchase scam. Kuala Terengganu OCPD Asst Comm Azli Mohd Noor said the 52-year-old victim came across an advertisement for a used four-wheel-drive vehicle on Facebook on July 4. Interested in the offer, the victim clicked on the link and began communicating with the purported seller via WhatsApp, he said. The victim was told to provide a copy of his MyKad and make an advance payment to a representative of the suspect's company, supposedly based in Port Klang, Selangor. "Between July 9 and 21, the victim made 40 payments to eight different accounts totalling RM241,700. "The victim began to suspect he had been cheated when he was asked to pay an additional RM31,000 supposedly for fingerprinting costs at the Royal Malaysian Customs Department," he said in a statement on Monday (July 28). ACP Azli said the victim lodged a police report on Sunday (July 27) and that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. – Bernama

KLCC street photographers fined RM2,000 each
KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly 30 freelance street photographers offering on-the-spot photo services to locals and tourists at KLCC were issued compound notices on Sunday night, each hit with a stiff fine of RM2,000 for operating without a valid permit. Authorities said the photographers were operating without valid permits in a public space. The action was taken following growing complaints and a recent misunderstanding involving some of the individuals, which went viral on social media, Harian Metro reported. The operation, involving personnel from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Immigration Department (JIM), and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), saw nearly 30 individuals compounded under By-law 3(1) of the Federal Territory Hawkers Licensing By-Laws 2016. These freelance photographers are known for offering smartphone photography services at busy tourist spots, particularly around the KLCC area, often taking pictures of visitors with the Petronas Twin Towers and other landmarks in the background. One of the photographers, who declined to be named, said this was the first time they had received a fine for offering such services. "The notice says RM2,000. That's a lot. If this keeps happening, I'll have to find another job," he said, adding that enforcement officers had mentioned the possibility of a future permit system. He also addressed the recent viral incident, saying it stemmed from a language barrier between a photographer and a foreign tourist. "I wasn't there, but from what I heard, it was just a misunderstanding. Now, we're all affected by it," he said. Despite some resistance during the operation, officers were able to manage the situation professionally, and no serious incidents were reported. Kuala Lumpur Immigration Director Wan Mohammed Saupee Wan Yusoff was present during the operation.
