Wadettiwar: Farmers are ending life, but Maha stalling farm loan waiver

Time of India8 hours ago
Nagpur: Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar questioned the govt's priorities on Tuesday, highlighting the increasing number of farmer suicides in Maharashtra.
He accused the govt of neglecting agrarian crisis while approving Rs20,000 crore for Shaktipeeth highway project.
"Money is available for massive infrastructure projects, but where is the budget for farm loan waivers as promised by the BJP before last year's assembly polls to the farmers?" Wadettiwar asked while moving an adjournment motion in the Legislative Assembly. He cited official data showing that between January and March 2025 alone, 767 farmers took their lives in the state.
Of these, 200 cases were declared ineligible for compensation and inquiries in 194 cases remained pending.
The Congress leader attacked the govt for forming committees instead of acting on its earlier pre-poll promise to waive farm loans. "Before elections, they said they would write off all farm debt. Now they're hiding behind committees. This is unacceptable," he said.
Referring to an incident in Latur, Wadettiwar pointed to the desperation among cultivators.
"A 65-year-old farmer, Ambadas Pawar, yoked himself to the plough as he couldn't afford bulls. That is a glaring example of the state's indifference," he said.
The Bramhapuri MLA also criticised agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate for allegedly calling farmers 'beggars' and took exception to former minister Babanrao Lonikar's derogatory remarks. "This govt has not even ensured remunerative prices for cotton and soybean. Even the minimum support price promises remain unfulfilled," he said.
With assembly Speaker rejecting the adjournment motion, opposition members staged a walkout in protest. "The govt is insensitive. It refuses to even discuss farm crisis," Wadettiwar said while leading the boycott.

'System killing farmers': Rahul Gandhi slams PM Modi over 'no MSP guarantee'; says 'farmers sinking deeper into debt'

Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said that farmers are falling into deeper debt daily and claimed that the system is killing farmers quietly, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had pledged to increase farmers' income twofold, is busy "watching his PR spectacle. " On the social media platform X, Gandhi referenced a news report indicating 767 farmers in Maharashtra died by suicide within three months. "Imagine... in just 3 months, 767 farmers in Maharashtra have taken their own lives. Is this just a statistic? No. These are 767 shattered homes. 767 families that will never recover. And the government? Silent. Watching with indifference," he said. Gandhi pointed out increasing agricultural costs, stating, "Farmers are sinking deeper into debt every day--seeds are expensive, fertilizers are expensive, diesel is expensive... but there's no guarantee of MSP. When they demand loan waivers, they are ignored" He referenced recent news, stating, "But those with billions? Their loans are easily waived by the Modi government. Just look at today's news--Anil Ambani's Rs48,000 crore SBI 'fraud'." The Congress MP stated, "Modi ji promised to double farmers' income--today, the reality is that the lives of those who feed the nation are being cut in half. This system is killing farmers--quietly, but relentlessly, while Modi ji is busy watching his own PR spectacle." On Wednesday, Gandhi expressed concerns regarding India's increasing reliance on Chinese products, identifying it as a significant threat to the agricultural sector. On X, he cited reports highlighting India's agricultural crisis due to dependency on foreign fertilisers. The report noted India imports 80% of speciality fertilisers from China, with recent supply disruptions affecting farmers significantly. "India is an agrarian country, and the farmer is the backbone of our economy. But today, that very backbone is bending under the weight of foreign dependence. India imports 80% of its speciality fertilisers from China, and now China has halted the supply," he stated. Gandhi highlighted ongoing fertiliser shortages, noting farmers' difficulties accessing urea and DAP. The addition of speciality fertilisers to scarce resources has worsened conditions. "This isn't the first time, farmers across the country are still struggling with shortages of essential fertilisers like urea and DAP, and now a new 'Chinese crisis' looms over speciality fertilisers. On one hand, the Prime Minister is busy printing his photos on fertiliser sacks, while on the other, our farmers are becoming increasingly dependent on "Made in China," Gandhi stated. The Congress MP criticised the government's lack of preparation and domestic production initiatives despite known risks. He emphasised the absence of policies supporting local fertiliser production. "Despite knowing that this supply could be disrupted at any moment, the government made no preparations. When the need of the hour was to promote domestic production, they made no policy, no plan," Gandhi stated. "Will the Indian farmer now be helpless even in his own soil? As precious time and healthy crops are lost, the farmer, drowning in debt and despair, is asking: 'Kiska Sath, Kiska Vikas,'" he concluded.

Cong will ban RSS once it comes to power: Priyank Kharge

Bengaluru: After claiming that Congress will ban RSS once it comes to power in the Centre, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge continued attacking the organisation on Wednesday, saying that it is 'cancer' and the BJP's love towards it is 'superficial'. Priyank Kharge, the Minister for RDPR, IT and BT, is the son of AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge. Priyank Kharge stated on Wednesday that, 'Following my remarks regarding a possible ban on the RSS, BJP leaders, including state President B.Y. Vijayendra and MLA V. Sunil Kumar, have been issuing various statements. Let the BJP not forget that there is a cure for the cancer that is RSS - an organisation that threatens national unity, the national anthem, the national flag, and the Constitution - and that cure lies within the Constitution itself.' 'For BJP leaders, defending the RSS is absolutely essential - to safeguard their positions and to secure their political future - because they are all tethered to Nagpur. Even if they dislike it, they are compelled to defend the RSS,' he said. The minister said, 'The BJP's love for the RSS is only superficial - it resides in their throats, not in their hearts. If their admiration were genuine, BJP leaders would be sending their own children to RSS shakhas instead of schools. Not a single BJP leader's child wears RSS shorts and plays with lathis at a shakha. Even the BJP knows that associating their children with the RSS would ruin their futures.' 'If Prime Minister Narendra Modi were to suddenly launch a campaign like 'Selfie with Shakha' for BJP leaders' children, even the RSS would come to know the truth of their loyalty. It would be good if respected Vijayendra and other BJP leaders acknowledged the historical truth that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had banned the RSS, considering it a terrorist organisation,' he claimed. 'Even if one doesn't fear mobs or violence, one must fear the Constitution of this country. Vijayendra, Sunil Kumar -- in this nation, the Constitution is the ultimate authority. My challenge to the BJP: As the RSS prepares to celebrate its centenary, let it list just 10 contributions it has made to the country over the past 100 years,' he challenged. Slamming Priyank Kharge for his statement on the RSS ban, state President Vijayendra stated, 'The Congress party's intolerance, hatred, and frustration toward the RSS will not harm the organisation in any way. Since the time of Nehru, the RSS has firmly withstood Congress' threats and attacks. So what weight do immature individuals like Priyank Kharge carry?'

'Apologise to Aaditya Thackeray': MVA as SIT rules out foul play in Disha Salian case

The Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) demanded an apology from Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and other Mahayuti leaders after the Mumbai Police SIT ruled out foul play in the Disha Salian case. The BJP and its Maharashtra coalition partners had pinned the 2020 death of Salian on Shiv Sena UBT leader and Uddhav Thackeray's son, Aditya Thackeray.(Facebook) This comes as the BJP and its Maharashtra coalition partners had pinned the 2020 death of Salian on Shiv Sena UBT leader and Uddhav Thackeray's son, Aditya Thackeray. Party spokesperson and MP Sanjay Raut said that everyone, including Fadnavis, deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde and Nitish Rane, should apologise to Aditya Thackeray. "Now, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis should apologise (to Aaditya Thackeray). Narayan Rane's son Nitish Rane, Devendra Fadnavis, other BJP leaders, Eknath Shinde, all of them should apologise to Shiv Sena (UBT) and Aaditya Thackeray,' Raut was quoted by ANI as saying. NCP (SCP) leader Rohit Pawar criticised the BJP for trying to take political advantage of the Salian case by associating her name with Thackeray. "Aaditya Thackeray had no relation to this incident. The BJP and its allies attempted to take political advantage by associating Disha Salian's name with Aaditya Thackeray... For political gain, these leaders tried to use the name of a person who is no more," Rohit Pawar said. The Mumbai Police SIT's report to the Bombay high court on Thursday ruled out 'foul play' in the Disha Salian death case. The Disha Salian death case Disha Salian, who had managed several high-profile clients, including actor Sushant Singh Rajput, died on June 8, 2020, after falling from the 14th floor of a residential building in Mumbai's Malad area. The Mumbai Police had initially registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) in the case. Notably, six days later, on June 14, Rajput was found dead at his Bandra residence, sparking widespread speculation in both cases. Salian's father Satish Salian had alleged that his daughter was 'brutally raped and murdered' and claimed that her death was part of a politically motivated cover-up aimed at shielding influential individuals. He sought the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray and the transfer of the investigation into the death of his daughter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
