Sabotage fears amid massive KLIA, JB checkpoint jams from autogate glitch this weekend
The Star reported that long queues have formed at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport's Terminal 1 and 2, and Johor Bahru's Sultan Iskandar and Sultan Abu Bakar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine centres.
'Weekends are a busy period and Immigration officers have been told to open all lanes to clear the passports manually,' an unnamed official at the Sultan Iskandar complex was quoted by the paper.
The disruption reportedly started around noon yesterday, affecting 200 autogates nationwide.
Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the failure and are investigating possible sabotage or hacking.
The biggest disruptions happened at the two centres in Johor Bahru, which receives influx of Singaporean visitors on a regular basis — especially on weekend.
People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) personnel were deployed to help manage the crowds at the two land checkpoints with Singapore, while Immigration Department officers initiated contra lanes at both bus halls to speed up processing.
Efforts were still ongoing to restore the nationwide system, at the time of writing.
Since June 2024, autogate access has been extended to visitors from 63 countries, as well as diplomats and their family members.
Malaysia has since deployed the QR code system at major entry points starting January this year to cut down on waiting time for foreign visitors.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — Malaysia recorded an increase of 20.4 per cent in foreign tourist arrivals from January to May this year, with a total of 16.94 million visitors compared to 14.07 million during the same period in 2024. Thailand saw 1.06 million arrivals (up 5.2 per cent), while India recorded 664,811 visitors, reflecting a strong recovery with a 32.0 per cent increase,' it said in a parliamentary written reply. The ministry added that arrivals from long-haul markets also showed strong performance, with Australia and the United Kingdom recording increases of 16.6 per cent and 8.7 per cent respectively, amounting to 198,968 and 185,197 foreign visitors. 'The increase in foreign tourist arrivals clearly reflects the effectiveness of various initiatives undertaken by the government through strategic approaches, progressive policies such as the Visa Liberalisation Plan (VLP), provision of support and incentives to industry players, and the implementation of high-impact promotional campaigns, including digital promotions and strategic collaborations with online platforms and airlines,' the ministry said. The ministry was responding to Seputeh MP Teresa Kok Suh Sim, who asked for the breakdown of foreign tourist arrivals, by country, to Malaysia from January to June 2025 compared with the breakdown during the same period in 2024 and the projected breakdown of foreign tourist arrivals for Visit Malaysia Year 2026. The ministry said it is targeting 47 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2026, with a particular focus on key markets showing high growth potential. 'These target markets include Central Asia, the Middle East, Asean, Europe, and Oceania,' it added.

About half of Malaysia's total international tourist arrivals during the first five months of the year were from neighbouring Singapore with 8.34 million visitors, followed by Indonesia at 1.82 million, China at 1.81 million, and Thailand at 1.06 million, the ministry said in a written parliamentary reply yesterday. 'Arrivals from 'long-haul markets' such as Australia and the UK also saw increases of 16.6% and 8.7% respectively, compared to the same period in 2024,' the ministry added. The Southeast Asian country recorded just over 25 million international tourist arrivals in 2024, falling short of its 27.3 million target.
