Johor police bust syndicate selling drugs on WeChat

JOHOR BARU: A drug syndicate that used WeChat to find customers and distributed narcotics by placing them at roadside spots for pickup has been taken down in a police operation.
The syndicate, active since January, was crippled in three raids in the city on June 19.
Johor police chief Datuk M. Kumar said three Malaysian men and two Vietnamese women, aged 29 to 46, were arrested in the operation from 12pm to 9pm.
"In the first raid, police stormed a serviced apartment unit that was used as a homestay and rented by one of the suspects since last month.
"Four suspects were detained and various types of drugs were seized.
"The gated and guarded apartment was used to process, repackage and store drugs before they were distributed to the local market," he said at a press conference today.
Later, a male suspect was arrested at a rented room in a terraced house.
Leads brought police to another apartment where more narcotics were found.
Kumar said the syndicate's modus operandi was to place drugs purchased by customers at pre-agreed locations unlikely to arouse suspicion, such as by the roadside, drains or rubbish bins.
A total of 16.86kg of ecstasy powder, 104g of ketamine, 1,950 Erimin 5 pills, 1.25kg of ecstasy tablets and 35 Yaba pills, with a street value of more than RM2.95 million, were seized in the operation.
"Police also seized drug-processing and repackaging equipment, five vehicles, RM9,100 in cash and jewellery, bringing the total value of drugs and assets seized to over RM3.21 million," Kumar said.
All suspects tested positive for methamphetamine.
Checks revealed that the three male suspects had criminal records related to drugs and other offences. They are also wanted under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
All suspects would be remanded until tomorrow to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
The two Vietnamese women were being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for lacking valid travel documents.

He said those arrested comprised four local men, a local woman, a Singaporean man, two Vietnamese women and a Laotian woman, aged between 21 and 64. 'They used two of the apartments to attract people for entertainment purposes while supplying drugs to their clients,' Comm Kumar said in a press conference at the Johor police headquarters yesterday. He said the drugs were packaged as tea bags while drug-laced liquids were stored in vape cartridges at the third unit. Comm Kumar added that the Singaporean suspect was believed to be a wanted person in his country for drug trafficking activities. 'We are working closely with the Singapore police over the matter. 'The suspects sell a kilogramme of ecstasy for around RM160, while the drugs packed into tea bags were sold at about RM5,000 per kg. 'The total seizure could feed the habit of about 33,000 drug users.' Comm Kumar also said that drug processing equipment, two cars, along with cash worth RM1,500 and some jewellery, were confiscated during the raids. 'Following investigations, it was found that four of the suspects are on record for offences related to drugs and crimes. 'We also conducted urine tests on the suspects, and all tested positive for methamphetamine,' he said. Comm Kumar said they have been remanded until today for investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a death sentence or life imprisonment and whipping, if convicted. 'The four foreign suspects are also being investigated under Section 6(3) and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63,' he added. Comm Kumar also disclosed that from January until June this year, police seized a total of 1.08 tonnes and 5,816.5 litres of drugs valued at RM106.9mil collectively. Another fatal shooting as Malaysia grapples with rising gun violence

MALAYSIA has recorded yet another fatal shooting, heightening public concern despite recent police assurances that the country remains safe. In one of latest incidents, a violent robbery attempt at a petrol station in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, turned deadly on July 3. Four masked men wielding machetes ambushed a car around 12.10am, smashing its windows in a brazen attack captured on viral CCTV footage. One of the car's passengers opened fire, forcing the suspects to flee. Johor police chief M. Kumar later confirmed that a man's body was discovered at Sultanah Aminah Hospital about an hour after the attempted robbery, believed to be linked to the incident. Yesterday night, a suspected gang member was shot dead in Sungai Petani, Kedah. Acting Bukit Aman CID director Datuk Fadil Marsus said the 34-year-old suspect, with over 30 prior records involving drugs, armed robbery, and gangsterism, was killed in a gunfight during a special operation. 'A firearm and several other case items were also found. We believe this group has been actively robbing gold shops since 2022, with recorded losses amounting to nearly RM6 mil,' Fadil said, adding that further arrests are expected. These incidents follow two fatal shootings in Kuala Lumpur last month, prompting city police chief Rusdi Isa to insist on June 17 that 'these shooting cases are all the result of problems that occurred outside the Kuala Lumpur contingent, and were brought here.' Police said the recent Cheras and Brickfields shootings were unrelated, with the Cheras case linked to criminal business from Sarawak and the Brickfields case tied to a gang feud in Selangor. Both incidents stemmed from internal disputes between suspects and victims. —July 6, 2025 Main image: Xavier & Koh Partnership

Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement here Saturday that the Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur has engaged with relevant Malaysian authorities, which announced last week the arrest of some Bangladeshis for alleged involvement in a radical militant movement. The ministry said the Bangladesh High Commission will extend necessary support to the expatriate Bangladeshis wherever needed. "Bangladesh once again reiterates its firm stand against all forms of terrorism, violent extremism and militancy, and it remains ready to extend full cooperation to the Malaysian authorities in this regard," it said. Of the arrested individuals, according to the statement, formal charges have been filed against five in Malaysian courts.
