SMU Football: 2025 Mustangs Season Preview and Prediction
SMU should be among the favorites to win the ACC Championship with quarterback Kevin Jennings back. If he takes better care of the ball and the Mustangs find a strong running game again, the offense will be potent. Defensively, the secondary could be much improved, which will have to make up for a defensive line that might not be as deep as it was last year. Nevertheless, head coach Rhett Lashlee's team has all the makings of a strong College Football Playoff contender. Expectations should be high.

SMU 2025 Season Preview and Prediction
Previewing SMU's Offense for 2025
SMU's offense rolled last year once Kevin Jennings was inserted as the starting quarterback. Jennings enters this season as a Heisman Trophy dark horse and with almost an entire year of starting experience running the show. With his ability to extend plays, SMU's offense should be dynamic again, if he can cut down on the turnovers in bigger games. He committed a combined five turnovers against Clemson and Penn State in the final two games of the season.

Replacing Brashard Smith (1,332 rushing yards, 14 touchdowns) will fall on unproven players like redshirt freshman Derrick McFall, Miami (Fla.) transfer Chris Johnson Jr., UCLA transfer TJ Harden and true freshman Dramekco Green.
There's little proven production from the running backs, so the SMU passing attack, led by contributors like wide receivers Jordan Hudson and Romello Brinson and tight ends RJ Maryland and Matthew Hibner, will need to start fast.

Previewing SMU's Defense for 2025
SMU's defense lost a slew of production and talent off last year's elite group. The question will be whether key transfers and a handful of veteran returners can keep the unit among the nation's best after the Mustangs ranked 26th nationally in total defense (326 ypg).

Led by talented pass-rushers like Isaiah Smith and Cameron Robertson, SMU has proven talent on the edge, while interior defensive linemen like Jeffrey M'ba, Terry Webb and Jonathan Jefferson are sturdy.
At linebacker, Alexander Kilgore looks like he could emerge as a star after posting 56 tackles last season. Ahmaad Moses and Isaiah Nwokobia form one of the top safety tandems in the country, while the cornerback group will need Deuce Harmon to elevate his game.

Previewing SMU's Specialists for 2025
Placekicker Collin Rogers emerged as a weapon for the Mustangs, setting the program record for most made field goals in a single season in converting 24-of-33 attempts. Seven of those were from 50 yards or more, another SMU record. Punter Wade McSparron and long-snapper Morgan Tribett are new, as are the punt and kickoff returners.

Top 25 player preview: Dom DeLuca looks to continue ascension in 2025
The 2025 season will be the final chapter in Penn State linebacker Dom DeLuca's college journey, concluding his rise from walk-on to major contributor. DeLuca was unranked as a recruit and had no Division I offers. The West Pittston, Pennsylvania product walked on with the Nittany Lions and showed steady growth over the years, earning the jersey No. 0, reserved for top special teams contributors, and developing into a solid rotational linebacker last season. DeLuca was named a team captain for both the 2023 and 2024 seasons and recorded Penn State's first ever points in the College Football Playoff with a pick-6 off SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings in Beaver Stadium. 2024 in review Dom DeLuca's ascension continued last season as a redshirt junior when he retained his title of team captain en route to a career high in tackles. DeLuca made strides in pass coverage, a previous weakness, with three picks and a pass breakup. DeLuca earned five starts across 15 appearances, peaking with five tackles against West Virginia, Wisconsin, SMU and Boise State. DeLuca had a strong playoff run, which could serve as a spring board into next season. Biggest question in 2025 Entering his fifth season in Happy Valley, it originally seemed like DeLuca would earn a starting role. After UNC transfer Amare Campbell arrived in the spring window, DeLuca will likely be LB3 on the depth chart. His experience is valuable, but he'll likely see most of his time in three linebacker sets. The biggest question for DeLuca in 2025 is whether he'll be able to take another step forward and push for more starts in his final season as a Nittany Lion. 2025 will be a success if... DeLuca's 2025 campaign will be successful if he's able to continue his success from Penn State's playoff push. Through three games against top competition, he recorded 12 tackles, 1.5 for loss and two interceptions. Similar production throughout the fall will lead to career high numbers across the board. If DeLuca can add value in three-linebacker sets and continue to play well against both the run and pass, it'll be a success. 2025 will be a disappointment if... The season will fall short of expectations if DeLuca is unable to acclimate to Jim Knowles' defensive scheme. Knowles' strategy has been praised for its complexity and the different ways in which linebackers can be used. If DeLuca can't learn quickly and elevate his play, it could lead to blown assignments. Realistic outlook for 2025 Given DeLuca's consistent improvement, it's likely he produces another career high in tackles, possibly eclipsing 50. DeLuca's game IQ also makes him a ball hawk, so multiple takeaways can be expected.

Sporting News projects Auburn football to meet FSU in bowl season
Sporting News forecasts Auburn to meet an old nonconference rival in bowl season. Auburn football fans have the same mindset as former Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis when it comes to its outlook on the season, "just win, baby." Auburn football has failed to win more than six games since the 2019 season, and its coaching staff has worked to bring in the best talent to rebuild the program into an SEC Championship contender, as well as a player in College Football Playoff chatter. However, fans are antsy and are ready to see rebuilding efforts show on the field. One publication believes the Tigers are taking a step in the right direction as a recent projection sends the Tigers to a quality Florida bowl game. Sporting News recently dropped its preseason bowl projections, pairing Auburn with an old non-conference rival in Florida State. The forecast, published by Bill Bender, predicts the Tigers and Seminoles will meet in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl on Dec. 27 at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida. This projection is interesting as it puts two teams on similar paths together in a postseason game. The Seminoles showed promise of being a College Football Playoff contender in 2023 by entering bowl season with a 13-0 record. However, their playoff dreams were dashed when quarterback Jordan Travis suffered a season-ending injury in Florida State's win over North Alabama. Travis was deemed a Heisman Trophy candidate, and the playoff committee felt that the Seminoles were not as powerful of a team without him, which resulted in Alabama earning the fourth College Football Playoff slot. The Seminoles lost to Georgia in the Orange Bowl, 63-3, a game that the Seminoles are still recovering from. Last season, Florida State finished 2-10, and are looking to return to national prominence. The two programs, which are separated by less than 200 miles, have played 19 times in history. Auburn owns a 13-5-1 record over the Seminoles, but Florida State won the recent game, 34-31, in the 2013 BCS National Championship Game.
