Full Preview of the Chapel Hill NCAA Baseball Tournament Regional Can the Diamond Heels advance out of a loaded field?
Postseason baseball is officially here – and if you haven't been following college baseball this season, your North Carolina Tar Heels are playing their best baseball right now.
UNC (42-12, 18-11), which dominated Clemson to win the ACC Tournament as a 3-seed, will host an NCAA Tournament Regional as the fifth national seed. Oklahoma, Nebraska and Holy Cross all join the Diamond Heels in Chapel Hill, compiling one of the postseason's tougher fields.
North Carolina will open its Regional slate against Holy Cross (31-25, 17-8) on Friday, May 30 at 12 p.m. If UNC beats the Patriot League champion Crusaders, UNC will advance to face the winner of Oklahoma-Nebraska on Saturday at 6 p.m.
The Diamond Heels aren't the only conference tournament champion in the Chapel Hill Regional. Nebraska (32-27, 15-10) beat UCLA to capture the Big 10 Tournament Championship, while Holy Cross downed Army West Point to win the Patriot League. Oklahoma (35-20, 14-16) escaped Kentucky and Georgia in the SEC Tournament, but fell to Vanderbilt in Game Three.
Just because North Carolina is hosting a regional, doesn't mean it'll advance to host a Super Regional. UNC nearly watched its season end against LSU in the 2024 Chapel Hill Regional, but mounted a late comeback and advanced to host West Virginia.
With how they ended the season, though, I'd be shocked if the Diamond Heels don't advance past the Regional Round. It doesn't help North Carolina's case it welcomes some of the top non-hosting teams in the NCAA Tournament, but if I've learned anything about UNC baseball in 2025, it's that no challenge is too large to overcome.

Position Players to Watch
UNC – Jackson Van De Brake, Kane Kepley
After being relegated to a reserve role in 2024, Van De Brake, the Diamond Heels' captain, is taking full advantage of his senior season. Van De Brake is currently hitting .314 (third best amongst North Carolina hitters) with 64 hits, including a UNC-best 15 doubles.
Kepley, a speedster in the outfield, is arguably the Diamond Heels' top offseason transfer. UNC needed to replace its entire starting outfield from 2024, but Kepley slides in perfectly. Kepley is mashing .293 with 60 hits, a team-best six triples and 38 stoles bases.
Oklahoma – Easton Carmichael, Jason Walk
Carmichael is a beast at the dish, leading the Sooners with a .321 batting average, 71 hits, 14 home runs, 55 RBIs and a .588 slugging percentage. Walk also sports the power-speed combo so many teams covet – three triples, eight home runs, 17 stolen bases and an Oklahoma-best 12 doubles.
Nebraska – Cayden Brumbaugh, Dylan Carey
There are top-tier hitters scattered across the Cornhuskers' lineup, but if I had to pick two guys to watch, I'm looking at Brumbaugh and Carey. Brumbaugh leads Nebraska with 74 hits and 27 walks, while his 18 doubles and .316 batting average are second-best on the team. Carey is arguably the Huskers' top slugger, leading his teammates with 20 doubles, 40 RBIs, plus tying with Tyler Stone for a team-best eight home runs.
Holy Cross – Chris Baillargeron, CJ Egrie
Baillargeron is mashing a Crusaders-best .386, plus he leads his teammates with 76 hits and 52 RBIs. Egrie is hitting .311, but he does his most damage on the basepaths, stealing a team-high 35 bases and scoring a team-best 67 runs.
Pitchers to Watch
UNC – Aidan Haugh, Jake Knapp
Haugh is an integral part of the Diamond Heels' star-studded, 3-man rotation. Going into the Chapel Hill Regional, Haugh carries a 5-4 win-loss record, 3.74 ERA and 73 strikeouts.
Knapp isn't just North Carolina's ace, but one of the top pitchers across college baseball. Knapp, the 2025 ACC Pitcher of the Year, carries a UNC-best 12-0 win-loss record, 2.17 ERA and 78 strikeouts into the Chapel Hill Regional.
Oklahoma – Kyson Witherspoon, Dylan Crooks
What the Diamond Heels have in Knapp, the Sooners have in Witherspoon. The unquestionable ace of Oklahoma's pitching staff, Witherspoon leads his teammates with 10 victories and 120 strikeouts, with the latter statistic tied for sixth-best in the nation.
It's difficult to find strong closers in college baseball, but Crooks is one of the country's elite bullpen arms. Crooks leads Oklahoma and is tied for third nationally with 14 saves, plus he carries a team-best 1.86 ERA.
Nebraska – Ty Horn, Luke Broderick
Horn sports a concerning 5.29 ERA, but he leads the Cornhuskers with 70 strikeouts. Broderick is another top-tier closer, anchoring Nebraska's bullpen with a team-best 12 saves, tied for fifth nationally.
Holy Cross – Danny Macchiarola, Jaden Wywoda
The Crusaders have not one – but two – 9-game winners on their pitching staff. Macchiarola leads Holy Cross with a 3.02 ERA and 91 strikeouts, while Wywoda's 9-2 win-loss record is best amongst starters.
Chapel Hill Regional Winner – Prediction
The Chapel Hill Regional carries an extremely tough field, but I like the Diamond Heels to advance – with three wins in three games. UNC is loaded across its starting lineup, while UNC's pitching staff is a massive upgrade from 2024.

Oklahoma Sooners future nonconference schedules

Schedules have been a major talking point over the last few weeks as the Power Four conferences have met for their annual media days. The SEC has discussed moving to nine conference games, but head coaches and school administrators don't seem all that interested. Greg Sankey spoke last week in Atlanta about the potential to move to nine conference games, but has argued it doesn't make sense with the SEC's strength of schedule. The Big Ten began politicking on Tuesday as Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti took a shot at the SEC for only playing eight league games. The Hoosiers dropped a nonconference matchup with Virginia, leaving the 2024 Cinderella with a nonconference slate that features Old Dominion, Kennesaw State, and FCS Indiana State. The three teams combined for an 11-25 record in 2024, buoyed by Indiana State's 5-7 record last year. This year, Indiana plays just three teams that had a winning record in 2024. Schedules aren't always going to be equitable, and that's why it's important to take into account strength of schedule metrics. Are they perfect? Nope. But short of a 64-team playoff (once proposed by the great Mike Leach), you're going to have a hard time finding the right mix of teams for the College Football Playoff. But with nonconference schedules top of mind, I thought it would be fun to take a look at Oklahoma's future nonconference matchups. 2025 - Michigan comes to Norman The headliner this year is the Michigan game. Facing the Wolverines in Norman is the biggest nonconference game inside Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium since Ohio State came to Norman back in 2016. 2026 - Oklahoma to The Big House Oklahoma makes the return trip to Michigan to complete its home-and-home series in what will be one of the biggest games of the nonconference schedule. With the SEC unlikely to move to a nine-game conference schedule, Oklahoma will need to add another game for 2026 to get to 12 games. 2027 - Pac-12 returns to Norman When these games were scheduled, all three of these teams were in different conferences. SMU has joined the ACC and Utah State and San Diego State have joined the Pac-12. This isn't your dad's or even your older brother's Pac-12 as it has been comprised of former Mountain West teams. SMU was a playoff participant in 2024. Their name, image, and likeness game will surely have Rhett Lashlee and the Mustangs a threat moving forward. The Mustangs fulfill the SEC's requirement of playing a Power Four opponent. 2028 - Facing Keisean Henderson On the surface, there doesn't look to be a marquee matchup here, but don't sleep on what Houston's building under Willie Fritz. They landed five-star quarterback Keisean Henderson in the 2026 recruiting class. He's the No. 2 player in the cycle and will provide a test for the Oklahoma defense. 2029 - Big 8 Rivalry Renewed The Oklahoma Sooners trip to San Diego would likely open the season, which would be a refreshing road trip to face the Aztecs. The last time Oklahoma made the trip to San Diego, they lost 51-31 to the Aztecs. That will certainly be a big talking point in the build up to the game. Oklahoma will welcome Nebraska back to town for the first leg of a home-and-home series vs. their old Big 8 and Big 12 rival. The Sooners won both meetings of their last home-and-home, with Spencer Rattler and Dillon Gabriel picking up wins over the Cornhuskers. Notable is that the Oklahoma State Cowboys only have two nonconference games scheduled in 2029. Could Bedlam return for good starting this season? 2030 - Returning to Memorial Stadium The last time the Oklahoma Sooners made the trip to Memorial Stadium to take on the Cornhuskers, OU dominated in a 49-14 rout. Eric Gray ran for over 100 yards and two touchdowns and Dillon Gabriel totaled 285 yards and three touchdowns in the win. 2031 - Aztecs come to Norman Sept. 6 vs. San Diego State Though Oklahoma's 1-1 all-time against San Diego State, the Sooners defended their home field in 1995 with a 38-22 win over San Diego State. This is the first season that the Oklahoma Sooners don't have a Power Four opponent on the schedule. You know it'll be someone good. 2032 - Nothing Scheduled Every decade or so, the college football landscape goes through a major shift. Could this see another realignment that changes college football once again? 2033 - In-State Matchup Sept. 3 vs. Tulsa Tulsa always makes for a nice nonconference opponent. It's not a stretch travel wise for either club and it generates a little in-state buzz — certainly not as much as if Oklahoma were playing the Cowboys. 2034 - Nothing Scheduled This year feels ripe for another historic nonconference matchup between Oklahoma and a power team. Maybe Bedlam? 2035 - Facing the Tigers What's interesting about this matchup is all of the Clemson ties Oklahoma has. But a decade out, there's no telling what the two coaching staffs will look like. Here's hoping it's a Brent Venables vs. Dabo Swinney matchup because that means things go pretty well for the Sooners over the next 10 years. Making the trip to Death Valley will be a lot of fun regardless of what the coaching staffs look like. 2036 - Dabo comes to town? If Dabo Swinney is still coaching, welcoming him to Norman would feel a lot like legendary Nebraska head coach Tom Osborne coming to town. Belichick hype lifts UNC Football to sellout before week one

Bill Belichick hasn't coached a single game at North Carolina yet, but the Belichick effect is already making waves. According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, the Tar Heels have officially sold out every ticket for the entire 2025 season. Season tickets were gone in the spring despite a 25% price hike. Now, every individual game ticket has also been snatched up. That means Kenan Memorial Stadium will be packed for each home game before Belichick's debut season even kicks off. The former New England Patriots head coach shocked the football world earlier this year when, just months after his NFL retirement, he agreed to lead the UNC program. MORE: Paul Finebaum calls Lincoln Riley a fraud After more than 20 years and six Super Bowl rings in Foxborough, few expected his next move would be to the ACC. But here he is, wearing Carolina blue and generating a buzz that UNC football hasn't felt in decades. Historically, North Carolina has been a basketball-first school. Even during Mack Brown's better years, sellouts were rare and football often played second fiddle to hoops. That's changed overnight. Belichick, already destined for the Hall of Fame and tied to legends like Tom Brady, Bill Parcells, and Nick Saban, has put UNC football squarely on the national radar. Recruiting has already seen a noticeable uptick. North Carolina's class ranked 29th for 2025, then improved to 19th for 2026. National TV slots are filling up with UNC matchups. Now, the ticket office has nothing left to offer. Whether Belichick's defensive brilliance translates to the college game remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: the Tar Heels are no longer flying under the radar. This is no longer just a basketball school. Fox Sports CFB analyst confident in UNC's chances ahead of 2025 season

Can UNC finally turn itself into a winner on the football field? There's plenty to be excited about this fall for the UNC football program, which begins a new chapter on Monday, September 1 at 8 p.m. against TCU. North Carolina stole college football headlines in December 2024, hiring 8-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick to be its next head coach. The Tar Heels will play new starters across the board, particularly on the defensive line and possibly quarterback. With all the mystery and potential in Chapel Hill, the excitement for college football at UNC is valid. In Fox Sports lead CFB analyst Joel Klatt's College Football Stock Watch, Klatt is "buying" stock in North Carolina. "I landed on the Tar Heels for two reasons: trust and schedule," Klatt said. "This team went under .500 a year ago, and it has a lot of transfers, so it's tough to project how this roster is going to do. "I don't think Belichick cares about all the noise surrounding him and the program as of late. I think he cares about just getting his players to do their jobs. If they can do that in that conference against that schedule, no one is running away from the Tar Heels. I think Belichick has a good chance of convincing his roster to not only do their jobs, but to also find ways not to beat themselves." Depending on how you evaluate the Tar Heels' 2025 opponents, their schedule is pretty favorable. UNC plays Charlotte and Richmond in consecutive weeks. North Carolina faces two more tough teams in UCF and Clemson, sandwiched around a bye week, but also the likes of California, Virginia, Stanford and Wake Forest. Syracuse, Duke and NC State will all prove to be good challenges for the Tar Heels, with their season finale in Raleigh carrying more implications than just a win.
