All 337 tonnes of Union Carbide waste incinerated at Pithampur
The waste was shifted on the intervening night of January 1-2, 2025.
According to official sources in Dhar district, the process of burning the waste, which began on May 5, in pursuance of a December 2024 order of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, took 55 days to complete the incineration of 337 metric tonnes of waste. The incineration was completed on June 30.
Out of the 358 tonnes waste transported out of Bhopal in safe containers on January 1-2 (40 years after the worst industrial disaster claimed more than 5400 lives due to poisonous gas leak at the Union Carbide plant), just around 21 tonnes (mostly mud) is being burnt and the process too will get completed soon.
Around 814 tonnes of ash and residual matter have been gathered out of the incineration process so far.
Official sources in Dhar district added that construction of landfills will be completed within two months, till then the residue will be packed in leak-proof bags and kept safely at the TSDF in Pithampur.

Five forest dept teams in Saranda to rescue wounded jumbo
1 2 Jamshedpur: Forest officials on Thursday pressed five teams to attend to a six-year-old wounded elephant that was sighted in Maoist-hit Saranda forest division of West Singhbhum. Divisional forest officer (DFO) Aviroop Sinha said, "The elephant sustained an injury to its left leg and is experiencing difficulty walking. Teams are at the spot to rescue the elephant, examine the cause of the wound and administer treatment to it. A team from Odisha has also reached the area." A few locals claimed that the injury could be due to an IED blast. Refuting these claims, the DFO added, "Prima facie, there isn't any concrete evidence to conclude that the would is the result of an IED blast. The elephant got injured probably on June 28. It walked into our jurisdiction on Wednesday." Earlier, Saranda forest officials deployed a drone to locate the elephant. The elephant was spotted pouring water on the wound while standing in the waterlogged field in the Digha area of the forest, he added.

18k detonators, explosives seized in West Singhbhum
1 2 3 4 Jamshedpur: In a major recovery, security forces have unearthed 18,000 live detonators along with some explosives hidden by Maoists in the West Singhbhum district on Tuesday. The explosives were recovered from a hilly forest in the Maoist-hit Husipi village under the Tonto police station of the district. According to the police officers, the explosive items were found when the joint security forces comprising personnel of the CRPF 60 Battalion, Jharkhand Jaguar (JJ) and district police came across the detonators hidden underground while conducting a combing operation in the area after getting specific tip-offs. Police have said the search and combing operation was carried out based on intelligence inputs about the explosives being hidden in the forest by the Naxalites to target the security forces. "The recovered detonators and explosives were defused in a controlled manner by a bomb disposal squad of the district police," a senior district police officer said. The officer further said the search operations were being carried out extensively in the forested area and would be continuing to recover explosives and other contraband items, if any, planted or hidden by the outlawed group to target security forces, civilians or their adversaries.
