National Highways confirmed a collision had caused a "significant damage" to a barrier on the popular stretch of road.
Writing on X, National Highways said: Lane 3 remains closed in both directions on the #M5 between J29 near #Exeter following a collision which resulted in significant barrier damage.
"Delays in excess of 30 minutes in both directions, approx. 5.5 miles of congestion."

Traffic pictures show lorries, vans and cars gridlocked on the road, while the Northbound route remains completely clear. In one photograph, an emergency service vehicle can be seen waiting for the traffic to ease. Although the road has been reopened, National Highways has warned drivers to expect ongoing delays. A statement from the organisation read: "All lanes have now re-opened on the #M5 southbound between J16 and J17 near #Almondsbury #Bristol. "A 52 minute delay and 6 miles of congestion remains in the area but should now start to ease. "Thanks for your patience this morning." The Sun has approached Avon and Somerset Police for comment. Major A-road shut in both directions after horror crash between SIX cars & lorry – and will stay closed ‘throughout day'
DRIVERS have been warned of travel chaos after a horror crash between six cars and a lorry. A "serious collision" has seen a stretch of the A11 shut down in both directions west of Norwich . The road is blocked off from B1172 at SpoonerRow, and B1135 at Wymondham. It was first closed after the smash, which caused "significant central reservation barrier damage", unfolded at around 3.30am. National Highways said: "Norfolk Police are on scene and have reported that the closure is likely to be in place throughout today." No details have been released regarding the conditions of drivers or passengers.
