Eric Del Fierro reflects on former UFC champion Dominick Cruz's mindset
Eric Del Fierro experienced all of former UFC champion Dominick Cruz's ebbs and flows.
Cruz (24-4 MMA, 7-3 UFC) is largely responsible for putting the lower weight classes on the MMA map. The former WEC and UFC champion is widely considered one of the greatest bantamweights of all time. An injury riddled career prevented Cruz from having a long title reign, but the Alliance MMA standout was able to defy the odds on numerous occasions throughout his career.
After defending his UFC bantamweight title with a win over Demetrious Johnson in October 2011, Cruz eventually vacated his belt due to injuries, which required multiple surgeries. He then returned from a three-year layoff to finish Takeya Mizugaki in the first round at UFC 278. Injuries struck Cruz again as he was forced into another layoff, but that never deterred him.
He returned from a 16-month layoff to dethrone T.J. Dillashaw and become a two-time UFC bantamweight champion in January 2016. His head coach, Del Fierro, was by his side for the incredible moment.
"He's always been a phenomenal athlete," Del Fierro told MMA Junkie Radio of Cruz. "I think Dominick's biggest strength has always been his mindset. He's never let the naysayers or the crowd influence who shows up to fight. Like any athlete, you have doubts. You have fears. I think his mindset was he was able to overcome all those injuries and get through it and still show up to fight and still win and be at the top of the game for so many years. I think now transitioning into something else, he's still embracing that mindset and willing to pass that onto up-and-coming fighters as well."
Cruz spent the second half of his career as a UFC commentator and will continue behind the desk after announcing his retirement in February. The 40-year-old decided it was time to call it a career after being forced to pull out of February's UFC Fight Night 252 matchup against Rob Font once again due to injury.
Cruz's final fight was in August 2022 when he was knocked out by a Marlon Vera head kick in their main event.

UFC on ESPN 71: Tatsuro Taira vs. HyunSung Park odds, picks and predictions

In a 5-round flyweight bout in the main event, Tatsuro Taira and HyunSung Park meet Saturday at UFC on ESPN 71 -- also known as UFC Vegas 108 -- at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The prelims begin at 6 p.m. ET (ESPN / ESPN+) with the main card at 9 p.m. (ESPN / ESPN+). Their fight is expected to start at approximately 11:45 p.m. ET. Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's UFC odds around the UFC on ESPN 71: Taira vs. Park odds, and make our expert UFC picks and predictions. Records: Taira (16-1-0) | Park (10-0-0) Originally, Taira was expected to fight Amir Albazi in the main event, but Albazi was forced to pull out due to an undisclosed injury. Taira is looking to bounce back after a split-decision loss to Brandon Royval last time out in a fight night main event. It was his first career loss across any competition, and it halted a 6-0 start to his UFC career. His previous 2 fights resulted in KO/TKO victories over Alex Perez and Carlos Hernandez, with a unanimous-decision win over Edgar Chairez, and a pair of submission victories over Jesus Aguilar and CJ Vergara. As far as Park is concerned, he is a perfect 3-0 at the UFC level, including a common opponent fight. That victory came in a Round 1 submission of Carlos Hernandez last time out. He has 10 victories in 10 career MMA fights across all formats. Taira enters this bout with a 4-inch reach advantage, although Park has a 4.27-to-2.99 significant strikes landed per minute advantage. However, Taira is way more pinpoint with those strikes, landing 67.48% of those significant strikes, to just 48.24% for Park. Taira also has a 2.73-to-1.90 takedown average, while posting a 44.12% takedown accuracy percentage, while Park has a 33.33% mark. Park has posted a 2.85 submission average, to just 1.64 for Taira, although both marks are pretty good. Watch this card with ESPN+ by signing up here. UFC on ESPN 71: Taira vs. Park picks and predictions Fight result (2-way line or moneyline) Taira (-350) will cost you 3 1/2 times your potential return, if you wanted to bet him straight up. That's way too much risk for not nearly enough return. This is going to be a fight that is a lot closer than the odds might indicate. In fact, it's a bit tempting to take Park (+275) as the heavy underdog, although he is just not accurate enough with his significant strikes landed per minute. The knock against Park is that huge 4-inch reach advantage for Taira. That will allow the heavy favorite to push and pull Park out when he feels. Over/Under Looking to the 'How Will the Fight End?' props, taking SUBMISSION (+100) at even-money is a strong play, and you won't have to declare a winner. Taira has 2 submission victories in his past 6 fights, and 5 submission victories across his past 10 bouts across all formats. For Park, he has 3 submission wins in the past 4 bouts, including 2 victories at the UFC level in 3 fights. Taking the method is the play, as going No (-210): Fight will go the distance? is just too expensive for a singular wager. However, it isn't a bad play if you were to toss this into a multi-leg parlay. UNDER 3.5 ROUNDS (-140) is a little on the risky side, but that's a much better value if you want to play a fight length wager. Visit MMA Junkie for more fight news and analysis. UFC on ESPN 71: Neil Magny vs. Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos odds, picks and predictions

In a 3-round welterweight bout on the main card, Neil Magny and Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos meet Saturday at UFC on ESPN 71 -- also known as UFC Vegas 108 -- at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The prelims begin at 6 p.m. ET (ESPN / ESPN+) with the main card at 9 p.m. (ESPN / ESPN+). Their fight is expected to start at approximately 9:45 p.m. ET. Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's UFC odds around the UFC on ESPN 71: Magny vs. Dos Santos odds, and make our expert UFC picks and predictions. Records: Magny (29-14-0) | Dos Santos (25-9-1) The 37-year-old veteran, a.k.a. "The Haitian Sensation", might be in the twilight of his career. He has lost 2 straight fights via Round 1 KO/TKO, and he has dropped 3 of the past 4 bouts, and 5 of the past 8 fights since June 2022. His last victory was a Round 3 KO/TKO at UFC 297 against Mike Malott. He has ended up going the distance just twice in the past 8 fights, with 3 KO/TKOs, going 1-2 in those bouts, while 3 fights finished via submission, also going 1-2 in those fights. For Zaleski dos Santos, he has also dropped 2 of his past 3 bouts, with a Round 2 KO/TKO against Chidi Njokuani last time out. His most recent win was a Round 1 KO/TKO against Zach Scroggin. While he has finished inside the past 2 fights, he went the distance in 6 prior bouts. Magny has a 7-inch reach advantage over Zaleski dos Santos, which is quite the disparity. Zaleski dos Santos has managed 4.26 significant strikes landed per minute, to just 3.43 for the veteran Magny. However, Magny is much more accurate at 59.02% on those strikes, to just 44.44% for the Brazilian fighter. Magny also has a 2.12 takedown average, to just 0.75, while posting a 38.56% takedown average. Zaleski dos Santos does have a slight 0.45-to-0.25 submission average advantage. Watch this card with ESPN+ by signing up here. UFC on ESPN 71: Magny vs. Zaleski dos Santos odds Provided by BetMGM Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 9:30 a.m. ET. UFC on ESPN 71: Magny vs. Zaleski dos Santos picks and predictions Fight result (2-way line or moneyline) MAGNY (+135) is worth a roll of the dice as a moderate underdog, mainly due to that enormous 7-inch reach advantage. Such a huge reach advantage cannot be discounted, as the fighter with the much shorter reach cannot get close enough to score big blows. In addition, while Magny has been knocked out in the past 2 fights, he is a desperate veteran in need of a win. In 43 career pro bouts across all competitions, he has never lost 3 straight bouts, too. Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win! Play now! Over/Under NO (+110): WILL FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? is worth a look at plus-money. Magny has finished inside the distance in 3 straight fights, and 6 of the past 8 bouts. For Zaleski dos Santos, he has had 2 straight fights finish inside the distance after a 6-bout run going all the way. In addition, the past 2 fights for Zaleski dos Santos have ended via KO/TKO while Magny has ended up with 3 consecutive knockouts. In fact, if you want to simply bet the method of victory, without declaring a winner, taking KO/TKO/DQ (+175) is worth a look for the chance to nearly double up.
