A Chennai-bound Air India flight returned to Mumbai, its departure location, after a burning smell was found inside the cabin, the airline confirmed on Saturday.
According to Air India, the incident occurred on Friday, June 27 on flight Al639, which departed from Mumbai and was headed to Chennai.
"The crew of flight Al639 operating from Mumbai to Chennai on Friday, June 27, 2025, made a precautionary air-return to Mumbai due to a burning smell in the cabin," an Air India spokesperson said.
"The flight landed safely back in Mumbai, and an aircraft change was initiated. Our ground colleagues in Mumbai provided all necessary support to passengers to minimise the inconvenience caused by this unforeseen disruption," the spokesperson added.
In another incident, a non-specific security alert was detected on one of Air India's aircraft on Friday. The aircraft was cleared for the next flight after standard security procedures, the Air India spokesperson said.
A statement issued by the Air India spokesperson said, "A non-specific security alert was detected on one of our aircraft. Standard security procedures were duly carried out, and the aircraft has been cleared for the next flight. Air India accords top priority to the safety and security of its passengers and crew."
Earlier, Air India Express (a subsidiary of Air India) flight IX2564, operating from Delhi to Jammu, was forced to return to its point of origin after a technical issue was detected mid-flight.
The flight, operated by an Airbus A320 aircraft, had a scheduled departure time of 10.40am but took off at 11.04am. It was expected to arrive in Jammu at 12.05pm. However, the aircraft was diverted back to Delhi, as per Flightradar24.
Confirming the development, an Air India Express spokesperson said, 'An alternative aircraft was arranged to operate our Delhi-Jammu flight after the original aircraft returned to Delhi due to a technical issue. We regret the inconvenience caused.'
These security concerns have come to light following the crash of the London-bound Air India-171 flight in Ahmedabad on June 12, killing 241 out of 242 passengers and crew members on board.

Murder over Dh300: India charges man 17 years after killing compatriot in Abu Dhabi

Seventeen years after an Indian national was killed in Abu Dhabi, allegedly over unpaid phone bills amounting to just Dh300, India's top investigative agency has finally filed a charge sheet against the alleged killer. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) posted the update on June 27 via X confirming that it had launched local prosecution against the accused, Inder Jit Singh, under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. CBI FILES CHARGE SHEETS AGAINST TWO INDIAN NATIONALS FOR MURDER IN UAE AND BAHRAIN — Central Bureau of Investigation (India) (@CBIHeadquarters) June 27, 2025 The case dates back to August 28, 2008, when Singh allegedly stabbed fellow Indian Rama Lingam Natesan to death in the UAE capital following a dispute over international SIM cards. According to CBI, Natesan used to sell SIM cards on credit to Singh, who defaulted on payments over time. The total outstanding amount reached Dh300. When Natesan asked Singh's employer to deduct the dues from his salary, Singh allegedly hatched a plan to kill him. He reportedly assaulted Natesan with a sharp knife, inflicting fatal injuries. The CBI said it coordinated with the UAE authorities and India's Ministry of External Affairs to gather admissible evidence. With sanction from India's Ministry of Home Affairs, the agency has now filed a formal charge sheet in a special court in New Delhi. In a related development, the CBI has also charged another Indian national, Subhash Chander Mahla, for murdering his employer in Bahrain in 2011. Mahla, who worked as a driver, allegedly attacked his employer with a blunt instrument after being 'aggrieved by his misbehaviour,' according to the CBI. He has been charged under Sections 302 and 404 of the IPC. The agency said both prosecutions were launched at the request of UAE and Bahraini authorities and reflect its commitment to holding Indian nationals accountable for crimes committed overseas. 'As the nodal agency to launch local prosecution, the CBI continues its efforts to bring culprits to face law and fulfil India's international obligations,' the agency said in a statement.

India arrests three accused of gang raping law student in Kolkata

Indian police have arrested three men accused of gang raping a law student in Kolkata, officials said Friday, a case that has reignited anger in a city still scarred by the rape and murder of a doctor last year. The survivor said she was assaulted on Wednesday evening inside a room on the college premises, Indian media reported, with the three accused including two current and one former student. The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), the ruling party in West Bengal state, said the "full weight of the law will be brought to bear". The case again highlights the chronic issue of sexual violence in the world's most populous country, where an average of nearly 90 rapes a day were reported in 2022. It has also sparked fresh political clashes between the AITC and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP accused the AITC-led state government of failing to protect women. West Bengal had become a "breeding ground for crimes against women", the BJP said in a statement. "State machinery continues to fail its daughters". The AITC rejected the accusations. The assault comes after a Kolkata court in January sentenced the rapist and murderer of a 31-year-old doctor to life in prison. Her killing in August 2024 at a state-run hospital in Kolkata triggered protests, with candlelight marches and nationwide outrage over the continuing violence against women. The brutality of that attack drew comparisons to the 2012 gang rape and murder of a young woman on a bus in New Delhi, a crime that shocked the country and led to widespread demonstrations.
