Christopher Ewert botched weight cut scraps Jackson McVey fight at UFC 317, gets him cut
Ewert took fight on just a few days' notice when ankle monitor-wearing Sedriques Dumas was court-ordered to stay home.

The middleweight fight between Christopher Ewert and Jackson McVey that was set to open up UFC 317 on Saturday has been canceled. Ewert, who took the fight on just a few days' notice, was unable to get close enough to the weight and the bout was scrapped.
Weigh-ins emcee Jon Anik announced the news at the start of the UFC 317 official weigh-ins session in Las Vegas – and also took the unusual additional step of announcing Ewert had been immediately cut from the UFC. Announcements of fight cancellations at weigh-ins don't typically come with news of the fighter at fault being released.
Ewert (7-0), from Chile, had been on the UFC's radar for a while. He was supposed to fight on Dana White's Contender Series on Aug. 2 vs. Yuri Panferov, but took the UFC 317 spot instead when Dumas (10-3 MMA, 3-3 UFC) pulled out earlier this week because he can't go 100 miles from his house while wearing a court-ordered GPS ankle monitor.
In retrospect, that looks like a bad call for Ewert – who apparently may have lost his DWCS opportunity for now, too.
McVey (6-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) was set to make his promotional debut. He never has seen the second round with six first-round finishes training under Mike Rogers at St. Charles MMA in Missouri.

I'll be curious to see what kind of improvements Talbott was able to make to his defensive wrestling and tactics since his first pro defeat, but I think that the takedowns will be a big back-pocket option for Lima down the stretch. Welterweight Christopher Ewert found this out the hard way. Ewert was supposed to step in to face Jackson McVey on the UFC 317 undercard. However, Ewert weighed in 10 pounds over the 170-pound limit. That's not the case with Ewert. He has been impressive during his career. He's a perfect 7-0, most recently having won back-to-back fights with Fury FC. Still, it's likely the UFC wasn't overjoyed with Ewert's weight miss resulting in yet another fight being pulled from the International Fight Week show. The damage here is twofold. Not only did Ewert lose what could've been a life-changing opportunity, but he also disrupted McVey's momentum. McVey is also an undefeated prospect who has proven to be a KO artist. He was originally supposed to face Sedriques Dumas, but the latter was forced to pull out because he was unable to get authorities to remove an ankle monitor in time to participate in fight week activities. Ewert was the replacement fighter. He was pulled from a planned fight on the upcoming season of Dana White's Contender Series to fight McVey. Fans may be losers in this one too. McVey has star potential. The 6-foot-4 26-year-old has a 100 percent finish rate with knockouts in every professional fight. UFC fans will have to wait to see him in the Octagon. It's possible Ewert could still land on DWCS, but the huge weight miss is a bad look for his first UFC event. For what it's worth, Ewert's camp says they tried to hard to make the weight, but couldn't get over the finish line. As it is, here is a look at the UFC 317 card set for T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, June 28. If this is all starting to sound way too repetitive, then perhaps you can understand my frustration when it comes to the current state of UFC matchmaking and card formatting alike – but I digress. In fact, this lightweight matchup between Beneil Dariush and Renato Moicano should provide its fair share of violence for as long as it lasts. Moicano may technically stand positive against southpaws at 3-2, but left-sided strikes from Dariush will probably be potent early when looking at how these two stack up. And though I'd also give a slight edge to Moicano's opportunistic submissions, Dariush is an excellent grappler who is also likely the better wrestler. If this fight were a few years ago, then this would be an easy pick for Dariush in my book. But with Dariush's chin matching the status of his hair more and more these days, I'm not sure I can rely on him to not get stung by something – even from people who aren't knockout punchers. I'll semi-reluctantly side with the momentum and improvements Moicano showed before his last short-notice loss, showing why he made my Top 10 rear-naked choke artists in UFC history by securing a club-and-sub on a diminished Dariush in Round 2.
