Former Haryana BJP Chief Son, Who Is Facing Trial In Stalking Case, Is Now Assistant Advocate General

News184 days ago
In 2017, Vikas Barala and his friend had allegedly pursued the woman, attempted to block her path, and tried to enter her vehicle.
Former Haryana BJP chief Subhash Barala's son Vikas Barala, who was facing trial in the stalking case of disc jockey Varnika Kundu in 2017, has been appointed as a law officer by the state government with the Advocate General's (AG) office.
Barala, who is among over 100 law officers whose appointments were notified on July 18 by the state government. He has been appointed as assistant advocate general at Delhi office of the AG.
The Kundu stalking case back then grabbed headlines and raised concerns over issues of women's safety and the influence of political connections in legal proceedings.
On the night of August 4, 2017, Kundu, daughter of former senior IAS officer VS Kundu, was heading to her home in Chandigarh when she noticed a car following her, Hindustan Times reported. When Vikas Barala and his friend allegedly pursued the woman, attempted to block her path, and tried to enter her vehicle.
Barala and his friend were initially charged under Section 354D (stalking) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act by the Chandigarh police. Charges of attempted abduction were added later following widespread criticism of police functioning.
Two months after the incident, a Chandigarh court framed charges against the duo.
Barala remained in jail for five months and appeared in his law course exam during the period. The case is being tried at a judicial magistrate (first class) court in Chandigarh, where prosecution evidence is complete and defence witness examination is underway, according to HT.
Meanwhile, Kundu expressed her disappointment over the judiciary as her case has been lingering on for the last 8 years in district courts. 'I still have faith in judiciary but it's kind of wavering now due to repeated adjournments as the trial is being dragged and delayed. It's been eight years and a long wait for justice. As far as the appointment of Vikas Barala is concerned, I would not like to comment on that at this stage," she said.

West Bengal police launches helpline for migrant workers facing harassment in other States

Amidst reports of targeting of migrant workers from West Bengal in BJP-ruled States, the West Bengal police have started a helpline number for workers to seek assistance. Responding to the development, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari shared his email-id and added that any citizen of the State who is 'harassed by Mamata's police' may reach out to him. The West Bengal police in a social media post stated that they are receiving 'reports from various sources that many people from Bengal, who have gone to work in other states, are facing various problems and instances of harassment'. 'If any citizen from Bengal working in another state faces any kind of trouble, we appeal to them or their family members to immediately inform their local police station. You may also contact the district control room,' the police said in the post. The West Bengal police in the social media post said that the helpline number is 9147727666 which will be available only on WhatsApp and the people can send a message there with the necessary information, including your name and address. 'Each piece of information will be verified, and we will coordinate with the concerned state authorities to take the necessary action,' the police said. According to West Bengal Chief Minister about 1000 migrants from the State were detained in other States. There have been reports of detention of migrant workers in BJP ruled states on allegations of being Bangladeshi nationals. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari called the post by West Bengal police politically motivated to mislead Bengalis residing in various parts of India for work, so that they become alarmed and confused. 'Across the Indian subcontinent, Indian Bengalis and Hindu refugees are not facing any problems. However, Hindu Bengalis living in West Bengal are frequently harassed by the police. I appeal to them—and to Indian Hindus from other states, regardless of the language they speak, who are residing in any district of West Bengal for work—if you have been harassed by the police. (Mamata's police), please feel free to inform me with details via email,' the BJP leader posted on social media. Mr. Adhikari urged any aware citizen of West Bengal, 'if you come across information about Rohingya Muslims or illegal Bangladeshi Muslim infiltrators residing in any district of West Bengal—please share the details with me at this email address My email ID is: adhikarisuvenduwb1@ '. 'I will ensure the information reaches the appropriate authorities,' the LOP said. Mr. Adhikari on Saturday claimed that there are 1.25 crore illegal immigrants in the voters' list of West Bengal, and all of them will be sent back following a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the rolls.

NIA chargesheets key accused in case relating to sharing of IS content online

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday chargesheeted a key accused in an IS radicalisation and conspiracy case of Tamil Nadu. The accused, A. Alfasith, hailing from Mayiladuthurai district, has been chargesheeted under Sections 153A and 505 of the Indian Penal Code, and Sections 13 and 39 of UAPA Act before the NIA Special Court in Poonamallee. Alfasith was closely associated with radicalised Islamists and die-hard supporters of IS, including Mohemmed Ashik and Sathik Batcha, who were involved in several terror-related cases in Tamil Nadu, the NIA alleged. In a press release, NIA said during investigation, it found sufficient evidence establishing that Alfasith and his associates circulated incriminating IS-related videos, documents, and images through social media platforms, targeting hundreds of young Muslim boys. They had created several WhatsApp and Telegram groups, such as 'Islamic State' and 'Black Flag Soldiers,' to promote unlawful activities threatening the unity, security, and communal harmony of the country. Their agenda was to spread IS ideology and radicalise the vulnerable youth. Investigations further revealed that Alfasith followed the activities of the global terrorist group IS and had downloaded incriminating videos and documents from an IS-operated Telegram Channel 'nashida33' (Al Wala Val Baro). NIA is continuing with its investigation to uncover the larger conspiracy behind the case.

Two CPI (Maoist) operatives chargesheeted for involvement in Chhattisgarh Assembly poll blast case

With this, 12 accused have been chargesheeted in the case. Ten others were chargesheeted earlier in December 2024 in the case. Dhanesh Ram Dhruw and Ramswrup Markam have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in the supplementary chargesheet filed before a court in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, they said. New Delhi, Jul 26 (PTI) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday chargesheeted two Maoist operatives for their involvement in November 2023 Chhattisgarh Assembly poll blast case, officials said. During the Assembly elections in Chhattisgarh in November 2023, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion killed an ITBP head constable, a statement issued by the NIA said. The blast followed a poll boycott call by proscribed terror outfit CPI (Maoist) in Badegobra village of district Gariyaband. The explosion took place when a polling team accompanied by security personnel was returning from Badegobra village after the completion of the voting process, it said. Dhruv was a headmaster in a government primary school and Markam was sarpanch of Chhotegobra panchayat in Gariyaband district that has a sizeable presence of Naxals, the statement said. Both were allegedly involved in providing logistics and financial support to members of CPI (Maoist) for carrying out the attack, according to the NIA investigation. Dhruv had allegedly actively assisted CPI (Maoist) cadres in making posters and banners for boycotting the assembly elections, among other things, the probe agency said. Markam had allegedly arranged incriminating materials, such as wires, switches, and firecrackers, for the Naxals before carrying out the IED blast, it added. NIA, which took over the probe in February 2024, said that it found the attack to have been planned by CPI (Maoist) Central Committee members Ganesh Uikey and Manoj, and Special Zonal Committee Member Satyam Gawade. It was allegedly carried out by cadres of the outfit's Gobra Dalam with the support of over ground workers (OGWs) from Badegobra-Chhotegobra village, the NIA said.
