Adbhut! Avishwasniya!: Delhis Infamous Minto Bridge Underpass Stays Clear Amidst Heavy Rains, X Cant Handle It

India.com7 hours ago
In a unique scene that took Delhiites by surprise and social media into tizzy, the infamous waterlogged Minto Bridge underpass witnessed free flowing traffic during Wednesday morning, even as heavy rain pounded the national capital. The 90-year-old railway underbridge has long been synonymous with torrential waterlogging during monsoon months, which has continued since India's independence.
The Minto Bridge, placed strategically where Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (DDU) Marg meets Swami Vivekananda Marg, is an integral artery that connects Connaught Place, New Delhi Railway Station, Old Delhi, and Darya Ganj. Its vulnerability to flooding has been a commuters' nightmare for long.

But a video uploaded by news agency ANI on Wednesday morning presented a very different picture: cars plying effortlessly under the underpass with no signs of waterlogging in sight. "Latest visuals from Minto Bridge; traffic flowing smoothly. The national capital was lashed with heavy rain this morning," read the caption accompanying the video.
The sudden turn of events soon attracted responses on all social media networks, with most calling it a "miracle at Minto Bridge." Amit Malviya of BJP attributed the turnaround to the new Delhi BJP government under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. "Even after heavy rain, vehicles passed smoothly over Minto Bridge, which used to get flooded with even a drizzle. That's the difference Delhi is seeing in just a few months under the BJP government!" Malviya tweeted.
X user Monica Jasuja shared the same sentiment, saying in amazement, "Breaking: Minto Bridge navigates Delhi rains without becoming a swimming pool! Adbhut! Avishwasniya! Akalpaniya! (Amazing! Unbelievable! Unimaginable!)".
Breaking: Minto Bridge survives Delhi rains without turning into a swimming pool! Adbhut! Avishwasniya! Akalpaniya! 90 years of "underwater bridge experience" finally ends. Turns out all it needed was some actual drain cleaning, not underwater engineering!
New government… https://t.co/Uk8uQyoBCo — Monica Jasuja (@jasuja) July 23, 2025
While some rejoiced at the miracle, others argued over whether that kind of success should be held newsworthy. "Anything functioning normally in this country is such an anomaly that it warrants a celebration," one X user wrote. Another said, "One of the busiest roads in the most significant borough of the capital country not waterlogged because of rain is news in this country."
Alternatively, other users provided compliments for the efforts of the present government. "You know the govt has done a great job when Minto bridge has no rain water surrounded with less traffic. Mass respect and W for Rekha Gupta," wrote another user. Smita Barooah, considering the difficulty, wrote, "The Delhi government has been working on cleaning the drains on a war footing.". In spite of the gigantic pendency & since they've been in power for less than 6 months, much has been accomplished. Of course much more is yet to be done. Minto Bridge remaining open during the monsoons is a sign of good progress.
The Minto Bridge has been an evergreen problem for civic officials in the past, with attempts over decades to address its waterlogging problems. The Public Works Department (PWD) has taken numerous steps over the years, ranging from the installation of pumps to the laying of new drainage lines. This latest example of the underpass staying dry even as heavy rains lashed the city indicates that all efforts made recently may be paying off, providing a ray of hope for Delhi's monsoons.

Left parties hold rally in Kolkata against harassment of Bengalis in BJP-ruled state

Kolkata: Left parties in West Bengal, led by CPI(M), on Wednesday, took out a protest march in Kolkata to condemn the alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking people in BJP-ruled states. However, from the same rally, the Left leaders accused West Bengal Chief Minister of dichotomy, which had prompted her to exploit the issue to suit her political agenda. The rally was led by the CPI(M) politburo member and the party's state secretary in West Bengal, Md. Salim. The rally began from the base of the Lenin Statue in the Esplanade area in central Kolkata and ended at Ramlila Park near Moulali, also in central Kolkata. Addressing party workers who took part in the protest march, Salim alleged that the BJP was targeting the Bengali-speaking people as part of its divisive politics. "Elections in Bihar are scheduled soon. Next year, Assembly polls will be held in West Bengal as well. Across the country, Bengalis are being targeted. We have no words to condemn such harassment and attack as it is being done as part of the party's divisive politics," said Salim. He also accused different BJP-ruled state governments of allegedly harassing the Bengali-speaking people after branding them as illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators first. "At the same time, an attempt is going on to brand them as doubtful voters in the pretext of conducting a special revision of the voters' list by the Election Commission of India," Salim said. According to him, people coming from a weaker economic background, such as migrant labourers, are suffering the most in this process. 'The Constitution allows Indian citizens to travel, work, and live across the country. This is internal migration, and the central government must provide them with social security," said Salim. He also slammed Mamata Banerjee for turning the plight of the Bengali-speaking into a poll issue, given the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election. "She is politicising the matter because the election is just around the corner. Mamata Banerjee also wants to divide the people by instilling a sense of fear among them. If people get divided, then both Mamata Banerjee and the BJP would benefit from it," he said.

'Looting In Name Of GST': Notices To Karnataka Vendors Trigger Political Slugfest

Last Updated: Small and micro traders across Karnataka had objected to receiving GST notices linked to their UPI transactions. The BJP and JDS slammed the Congress government over the move. A political slugfest has erupted over GST notices issued to small traders and vendors on their UPI transactions in Karnataka, with the Opposition BJP and JDS accusing the Congress government of trying to pass on the blame to the Centre. A section of small and micro traders across the state had objected to receiving GST notices linked to their UPI transactions, and traders' associations asked the businesses to boycott UPI transactions. They had also called for a statewide strike on July 25. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah later announced that the government won't recover tax from them. Siddaramaiah said he held a meeting with small traders and discussed the notices. 'I called a meeting with small traders and others to discuss the issue of notices being issued to small traders, as notices were being issued to those with a turnover of more than Rs 40 lakh," he said. 'Around 9000 notices were issued. The central government has decided to impose a one per cent tax on these individuals… There was confusion among small traders about this…Traders dealing in exempt goods shall not be registered compulsarily…Old tax arrears would not be pursued…The delegation has agreed to withdraw the agitation called on July 25," the Chief Minister added. 'All these days, #TaxCM @siddaramaiah loudly claimed that the state government was not responsible for imposing taxes on small traders — blaming the central government instead, and saying taxation wasn't the state's domain. But now, he has announced that taxes will not be collected from small traders. This clearly proves that the @INCKarnataka government was the one imposing heavy taxes — running a loot in the name of GST, with traders receiving tax notices worth lakhs," BJP Karnataka tweeted. JDS, a BJP ally, also slammed the Congress government over the issue, however, welcomed the government's step to withdraw the notices. '@Siddaramaiah, who had been dismissing claims and saying that the state government had not issued notices to small traders, has finally admitted the truth. The Congress government, which had started collecting what people are calling the #GuaranteeSiddaramaiahTax in the name of GST to fill the empty treasury, has been forced to wake up after facing backlash from small traders and the public. In connection with the GST notices sent to small traders by the Commercial Taxes Department, the Chief Minister held a meeting to avoid further embarrassment," JDS tweeted. view comments First Published: July 23, 2025, 20:56 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
