
Lena Dunham's new A-list filled Netflix show is supposed to show us the hilarious differences between Brits and Americans. Sadly, it is full of woke psychobabble and a torturous main character in her 30s who acts like a teenager: CLAUDIA CONNELL
So, it's to the credit of new comedy Too Much that when leading character Jess, an exuberant but needy New Yorker, relocates to London, she lives in a shabby flat on a north London council estate - even though it wasn't what she had in mind.
Like so many Americans, Jess (Megan Stalter) grew up with a romanticised view of 'jolly old England'.
She idled away her time in New York bingeing British costume dramas where 'women fan themselves and then die of tuberculosis'. To her, the word 'estate' conjured up visions of something out of a Jane Austen novel with dashing Mr Darcy and Rochester types at every turn - not grey blocks of flats with drug dealers on corners.
The 'estate' misunderstanding is the first of many that occur, when two cultures collide.
Given Jess's love of British rom-coms, it's fitting that this hotly anticipated series is made by Working Title Films, the production company behind such movies as Notting Hill and Love Actually. It's directed by Lena Dunham, creator of the acclaimed and ground-breaking series Girls, and co-written with her British husband Luis Felber, loosely basing the story on their own experience.
When her horribly arrogant American boyfriend, Zev (Michael Zegen) cheats on her with beautiful influencer Wendy (Emily Ratajkowski), Jess agrees to be transferred to the London branch of the media agency she works for to try and mend her broken heart.
Her nephew waves her off with a sage piece of advice, warning her that 'British people think Americans are stupid and vulgar but funny, while Americans think the British are snotty and pretentious but smart'.
Will Sharpe, who plays Jess's love interest Felix, alongside Stalter. Claudia Connell writes: 'I'm not sure how realistic it is that an achingly cool musician like Felix would date a chubby girl who looks like she applies her make up in the dark.'
By the end of episode one, Jess has already landed a British boyfriend. Wannabe rock star Felix (Will Sharpe) introduces her to Jaffa Cakes, explains what 'bog roll' means and as good as moves into her flat after the first date.
What unfolds over ten episodes is a sometimes amusing, but mostly torturous, romp through their burgeoning relationship as they meet each other's friends and family and wonder if they are right for one another.
Dunham's hit series Girls worked so well because it offered a refreshingly realistic look at the lives of women in their 20s. Still works-in-progress, they were feeling their way, trying men on for size and struggling with careers and finances.
Too Much fails to hit its mark because, although her precise age is never given, Jess is in her mid-30s, yet still living the chaotic life of a teenager. She dresses like an oversized toddler in colourful romper suits and white tights, with giant bows in her hair and spends an awful lot of time crying in bathrooms while stalking Wendy - her love rival - online. Her immaturity quickly becomes grating.
The show is at its best when it highlights the differences between Brits and Americans. There's a great scene where Jess's snobby boss, played by Richard E Grant, gives her a list of ten 'American' behaviours to avoid including her habit of announcing when she needs to pee and removing her shoes at her desk.
It's at its worst and most tedious when the episodes - and sadly it's the majority of them - focus on dissecting the minutiae of every relationship. 'I want to hold space for how you're feeling,' is one example of the psychobabble the show is littered with.
It's to be expected that the Millennial characters exist in a weird and woke bubble but, at times, that wokeness feels contrived and shoe-horned in.
Take Jess's older sister (played by Dunham) who is newly single after her husband left her to explore a pansexual lifestyle. Then there's Jess's London colleagues who are cliched to the point of caricature - from the feisty exec toying with lesbianism, to her pink haired male PA, who spends his weekends at ketamine-fuelled orgies.
If it's all meant to be satire, it's just not smart or original enough.
Dunham has done much to speak out about a lack of body diversity in Hollywood and it's good to see Stalter, an actress who isn't a size zero, in the leading role.
Jess spends much of the show semi-naked enjoying her wild sex life, and clearly loves her body.
But to be brutally frank, I'm not sure how realistic it is that an achingly cool musician like Felix would date a chubby girl who looks like she applies her make up in the dark.
'Too Much' is something Felix accuses Jess of being after she has one of her many meltdowns and it's a phrase that Dunham admits her own husband used about her. Not an insult, rather a polite way of saying that sometimes the loud, brash, no-filter American behaviour needs to be toned down.
Although there are laughs along the way and an impressive roll call of A lister cameos (Stephen Fry, Jessica Alba, Rita Ora, Emily Ratajkowski and Jennifer Saunders to name but a few).
I imagine that, for most Brits, the series - and Jess in particular - really will be 'too much'.
Ultimately, there's a fine line between cute and quirky and irritatingly exhausting and Jess (and the series) - sadly - lands the wrong side of it.

M&S says it's ‘thigh guy summer', but are you brave enough to bare your legs?
With Wimbledon in full swing, you don't have to look far to see a surfeit of men in shorts. Only this summer, shorts aren't solely contained within the grassy environs of Centre Court. Whether they've been influenced by Carlos Alcaraz or Harry Styles, more men than seems probable have decided that shorts are the new black, the new jeans and the new must-buy, even if they last picked up a tennis racket in primary school. So prevalent is the look that Marks & Spencer has even given it a name. According to the high street retailer, it's going to be a 'thigh guy summer'. Given we've already had a 'hot girl summer', a 'tomato girl summer' and a ' Brat summer ', perhaps it's only fair that men are the focus of fashion's latest microtrend. 'From runways to city streets, men everywhere are embracing the rising hemlines of the 'thigh guy summer' trend – a bold return to short shorts that's redefining masculinity, confidence and comfort in menswear,' claims M&S. 'As temperatures climb, so do inseams, with fashion-forward men ditching knee-length chinos and cargos in favour of five-inch (and preferably shorter) cuts that deliver on both style and personality. No longer reserved for the gym and swimwear, today's short shorts are tailored, stylish and unapologetically thigh-baring.' Improbable as this may seem to those who are married to their summer chinos and balk at baring an ankle, never mind a thigh or knee, M&S says it has the statistics to back its claims, citing a recent survey that found 66 per cent of men reported liking the 'short shorts' trend, while 76 per cent said they felt more body confident than ever before. Data from Google echoes this, with searches for 'men's short shorts' up 138 per cent. On TikTok, meanwhile, the #shortshorts hashtag appears in 113,000 videos and counting. 'I'm very here for thigh guy summer, and think it's good that short shorts are becoming a staple in lots of guys' wardrobes – myself included,' says the stylist Peter Bevan. 'My go-to length is around the mid-thigh, and I'd suggest always going for a roomy fit – it should only be your legs on show, so absolutely avoid anything which could be described as 'revealing'.' 'People just need to get used to the idea of seeing guys' legs above the knee rather than thinking it's a big fashion statement, especially when it's over 30 degrees.' Bevan doesn't believe there's an upper age limit for wearing shorter shorts. 'As with any shorts, the key is in the styling. If you're wearing them for a relaxed weekend look, go for sports shorts with a T-shirt. If you're dressing up, try tailored shorts and a polo shirt. If you wear them in an unconsidered way, though, they can easily look like they're not working. And then there's context to think about. They're not really appropriate for a formal event or for certain venues.' Luke Jefferson Day, editor of menswear magazine Man About Town, has been wearing short shorts for years. 'It's all about fit, and making sure they aren't too tight or too short,' he counsels. 'I love them with loafers, trainers, even Crocs. A shorter short also tends to be more flattering on a man's leg. They're great for showing off your hard work in the gym.' Which is all very well for gym buffs, cyclists and tennis players, but less encouraging for those whose main form of exercise is lifting a pint to their lips. Without doubt, short shorts are a flex: it's unlikely that Harry Styles, Paul Mescal and Alexander Skarsgård would be wearing them so readily if their legs weren't toned. At the recent menswear shows in Paris and Milan, the hottest accessory wasn't a Dior book tote but a highly honed quad. So how do you get them? 'If you're aiming for that sharp, sculpted thigh look, focus on exercises like Bulgarian split squats, walking lunges, and step-ups – they target the quadriceps while also building overall leg shape and balance,' advises fitness coach Matt Kendrick, founder of MK Health. 'For real definition, consistency is key, along with keeping body fat low through smart nutrition and cardio. Hundreds descend on Langport for Nudefest 2025
Hundreds of people have descended on a campsite for what has been billed as a "normal festival" - just one where everyone is naked. Thorney Lakes in Langport, Somerset, has once again become home to Nudefest - a week-long event that sits at the centre of the British Naturism calendar. From a performance by The Wurzels to a volleyball tournament and a cider farm tour, the event attracts hundreds of people from across the UK each year."In the evening we've got a silent disco, bands playing and karaoke - it's a normal festival but we're not wearing clothes," said Sue May, 50, from Hampshire who has been attending the festival since 2018. "It doesn't matter who you are or what you look like, everybody gets on - you don't find an angry naturist," she said," Ms May added. "It's a place you can be yourself." Speaking from the festival site she told the BBC: "If people saw what I'm looking at here, there's just people wandering around, they're chatting, there's nothing seedy about it."As a volunteer with Women in Naturism, helping women find the confidence to explore the community, she said she believed interest in the lifestyle had "definitely grown" since Covid. University of Sheffield student Saoirse Newhouse, 21, told the BBC she was attending the festival for the first time as part of the organising team, carrying out duties from setting up sports games to filming social media content. Describing the "friendly" atmosphere at the festival, she said: "Obviously when you do something that isn't societally considered the norm you generally have to be quite open minded.""There's always something going on, some sort of activity, so you can always get involved with that and talk to more people," she added. She also encouraged other women like her to get involved with naturism, despite persistent stereotypes about the community mostly consisting of older men. "There is a bit of a gender skew," she said - but added: "I, and a lot of other women I've spoken to, [say] you feel more respected as a human here."I've never at any of these festivals had someone staring at my breasts or anything inappropriate like that - I've had it more commonly in the outside world," she said - adding that she felt more protected at a naturist event than she did at a pub or club. She described the "strict stance" taken by British Naturism on harassment, which she felt encourages more people to attend "because they know their security is really respected". "People do assume that if you're wearing no clothes you must get unwanted attention but obviously when we look at statistics we realise that what a woman is wearing doesn't determine if she's going to be harassed or assaulted," she added. "It's completely on the perpetrator." Another attendee, 64-year-old Dave Bygrave from North Yorkshire, told the BBC there was "just a really nice and friendly atmosphere" at the festival. "It's fantastic to be in this place where you can just wander around, get food, hear the music, have a drink and talk to people without ever having to get dressed," he many in the community, he said, he and his wife had long been interested in the lifestyle but had been able to go to far more events following their retirement. "The difference between packing to come to Nudefest versus packing for any other holiday is comical really - a couple of t-shirts and some spare underwear for the journey home and that's about it," he joked.
