Women's NCAA March Madness: Keys to a deep run
Local reporters break down some of the top teams, and their keys to victory in the 2025 March Madness tournament.
The LSU Tigers women's basketball team is dancing in March Madness. Literally.
Ahead of the Tigers' second-round matchup against the Florida State Seminoles on Monday, LSU head coach Kim Mulkey joined her team as they let loose and performed the Flex Line Dance on the court at Pete Maravich Assembly Center with musician Cupid, the creator of the line dance and "Cupid Shuffle."
Mulkey was donning a white pullover when she jumped in to showcase her dance moves. She later switched to a bedazzled cerulean blue suit jacket and a pair of white trousers for tip-off against the Seminoles.
The Tigers are looking to return to the Sweet 16 for the third consecutive year.

LSU football recruiting: Priority Louisiana defensive line target reveals decision date

2026 defensive lineman Darryus McKinley named LSU football to his top four and will announce his decision on August 1, per a report from Rivals on Wednesday. Texas, Florida and Tennessee make up the rest of McKinley's suitors. He will be one of two LSU targets to make his decision public this weekend, preceding Deuce Geralds' announcement on August 2. Rivals' Prediction Machine lists LSU as the heavy favorite days ahead of McKinley's announcement. A three-star prospect per Rivals' Industry Rankings, McKinley ranks No. 48 at his position and No. 16 out of Louisiana. The Lafayette native plays high school football at Acadiana and is the younger brother of current Tiger defensive tackle Dominick McKinley. Darryus' commitment would add another set of brothers to the roster, joining Whit and West Weeks as well as Ben and Brett Bordelon. McKinley's latest visit to LSU came on July 28, his only visit since March. The Tigers are likely to add him to their 2026 class, which ranks fifth in the SEC and eighth nationally. McKinley would strengthen LSU's strong defensive line crop, which already includes Lamar Brown and Richard Anderson.

LSU football QB Garrett Nussmeier gets candid about decision to return to LSU

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier didn't hold back about his reasons for returning to Baton Rouge for a fifth year in an appearance on ESPN's Marty and McGee show. "I didn't want to watch anybody else be the guy that leads LSU to the national championship," Nussmeier said. "LSU means the world to me. I always wanted to win a national championship here. It wasn't about winning a Heisman or being the first overall pick. It was just about winning a championship, so having that opportunity, I just couldn't pass it up." After his first year as the starter for LSU, Nussmeier generated NFL Draft buzz with his talent. He decided to forego his professional aspirations to don the purple and gold once again. The decision sparked an active offseason for the Tigers. Head coach Brian Kelly's staff signed multiple experience power four receivers to rebuild LSU's offense around Nussmeier. Expectations are high for the 2025 season as LSU finds itself in the national championship conversation. Nussmeier passed for 4,052 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2024. A similar season would make him the program's all-time leading passer but the Lake Charles, LA native is focused on representing his home state well and bringing a national title back to LSU. "It's hard to explain," Nussmeier said. "Everybody that is from Louisiana probably can understand it. Just that stadium, that environment, you know, the passion of the fans, it's one state around one team. It's one state in one stadium.' "There's no place like Death Valley. It was just an unbelievable opportunity."

Where LSU head coach Brian Kelly sits in CBS Sports' 2025 hot seat rankings

LSU football is hoping for a breakthrough in Brian Kelly's fourth year leading the program. In three years with the Tigers, Kelly has led LSU to an SEC West title and two 10-win seasons. But the Tigers are looking to take that next step into the College Football Playoff. Kelly knows the stakes are high. After landing the No. 1-ranked transfer class in the country and returning quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, reaching the playoff -- and maybe more -- is the expectation. If LSU doesn't compete for an SEC title and make the field of 12, there will be questions about Kelly's job status in Baton Rouge. Earlier this week, CBS Sports released its hot seat rankings, gauging the firability of every coach in the FBS. CBS rated the coaches on a scale with five, meaning "win or be fired," and anything under one means the coach is "untouchable." Kelly earned a 3.33, putting the LSU head coach in the "pressure is mounting tier." If LSU reaches the playoff, even with a first-round loss, Kelly's job is likely safe. If LSU comes close but falls just short with double-digit wins, it's probably enough, too. But if LSU goes 8-4 again, there will be talk about LSU making a move. Kelly has strong support from the administration and has won a lot of football games -- both facts work in his favor. But the expectation at LSU is to win national championships.
