Aiden Markram shares a drink with fan after WTC Final heroics, turns out he's a friend from school

Hindustan Times15-06-2025
Aiden Markram is a freshly-minted South African hero, scoring 136 in a remarkable chase at Lord's in one of the most famous fourth-innings batting performances in recent history to seal the World Test Championship with a victory over Australia. Following a determined, powerful display of batting, which earned him the man-of-the-match award, Markram was spotted by camera crews accepting a beer from some South African fans in the boisterous Lord's crowd — maybe one of the most well-deserved beers any person has ever had.
Reflecting on the moment afterwards in the press conference, having led South Africa to a first ICC trophy in 27 years and first major tournament win in their history, Markram revealed that the veer was offered by an old friend of his, of which he took full advantage in order to kick off celebrations after a tense match that capped off a two-year long journey.
"Yeah that was cool. That was one of my mates from school. He wanted me to come over and I said, 'Flip man, I can't, it's too busy, it's chaos.' And then he was like, 'Oh, here's a beer.' And I was like, 'OK, I'm in,'' said Markram of the moment in the press conference, receiving a round of laughter for his honesty.

The video of the moment shows Markram making his way over from the edge of the boundary, where the South African players were enjoying a lap of honour around the home of cricket, over to a group of fans. He then proceeded to embrace his friend, before chugging the beer — a picture that truly got the party started for the Proteas and all their fans who had arrived in droves to London to support their team.
'So, I've had my first one for today and I'm pretty sure there'll be a few more,' said the man without whom this party would never have found solid footing.
South Africa's cause for celebration was guided home by Markram, captain Temba Bavuma, and a 9-fer by Kagiso Rabada, three of the more experienced and senior members of a unit who have now gone on a true hotstreak of winning Test matches. Once the raucous celebrations from this historic moment calm down, attention will turn to defending their WTC title, with an eye on many more ICC trophies in the years to come.

WCL: Legends Snub Pakistan, Why Ind V Pak At Asia Cup? | First Sports With Rupha Ramani | N18G India V Pakistan is cricket's biggest rivalry, but should it even happen anymore? After the horrific Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians, public sentiment in India is crystal clear: no ties, no matches, no sports diplomacy with Pakistan. Yet, despite the outrage, the Asia Cup 2024 still features the high-voltage clash. So, why is the BCCI moving forward? Is it about money, contracts, or just being stuck in a system? Players from the World Championship of Legends set a bold example by refusing to face Pakistan in the semifinal. Rupha Ramani explores how other nations like Russia V Ukraine, Iran V Israel, and North V South Korea have taken firm geopolitical stands in sports. But when the stakes are about terrorism, is a cricket match ever just a game? Also on the show, Pakistan is likely to miss the spot for the 2028 LA Olympics. ICC is reportedly considering a regional qualification system. With India being a higher-ranked nation, chances for Pakistan's qualification are low. The list also includes some of the other top-ranked nations. Has ICC failed to crack the global market? And China's pork obsession is threatening badminton's rise in Europe. Lady Eliza Spencer, niece and look-alike of the late Princess Diana, is officially engaged to her long-time South African partner, Channing Millerd. Their dreamy proposal during a getaway in Santorini has taken the internet by storm. The aristocrat, 33, announced the exciting news with a series of loved-up images from the special moment — which took place during the couple's recent getaway to Santorini, Greece. 'Forever and Ever," Spencer captioned the sweet Instagram post. In the images, Eliza can be seen flashing her diamond sparkler with the stunning views of the Aegean Sea in the background. One of the pictures also shows the romantic set-up, which includes a candle-lit dinner surrounded by flowers overlooking the caldera. However, amid the joyous moments and blessings for the couple, Eliza's father and brother of the late Princess Diana — Earl Charles Spencer — is missing. As per a report by New York Times, he has not publicly congratulated his daughter on the news. In an interaction with Hello Magazine in March, Eliza shared her plans for the wedding. 'We love the idea of a destination wedding," she said in March. 'We feel drawn to Italy, especially somewhere by the ocean — that feels so romantic to us. Spain has that same coastal charm we adore." 'At the same time, Amelia and Greg's wedding in Cape Town was unforgettable, and South Africa will always be home," she added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Jasprit Bumrah To Miss Asia Cup? Report Makes Big Claim, Says "Ajit Agarkar, Gautam Gambhir..."

Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah was on Friday released from the national squad after completing his quota of three Tests in the five-match series against England and stakeholders in Indian cricket have already started discussing his next international assignment. The 31-year-old Bumrah bowled 119.4 overs across three games and took 14 wickets. "Jasprit Bumrah has been released from India's squad for the fifth Test of the series against England," BCCI announced in a release on Friday. Twice Bumrah returned five-wicket hauls -- at the Headingley in the first Test and at the Lord's in the third game. However at Manchester, Bumrah conceded more than 100 runs in a single innings for the first time in his career. Bumrah now has 219 wickets in 48 Tests. Prior to India's departure, chairman of selection committee Ajit Agarkar had confirmed that the pace ace won't play more than three Tests keeping his workload management in mind. Which format will Bumrah feature next? India's next international assignment is Asia Cup T20 tournament and it would be a surprise if Bumrah opts to play the tournament considering that the next Test series against West Indies will start in less than a week's time after the event in the UAE. The Asia Cup will conclude on September 29 and the first Test against the West Indies will start in Ahmedabad on October 2 followed by the second match in New Delhi from October 10-14 . Then in November there are two Tests against South Africa. "It will be a tricky call but Bumrah loves Test cricket and there are World Test Championship points at stake. As far as T20 is concerned, he can play the series against New Zealand in January, which will be a dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup," a BCCI source abreast with Indian selection process told PTI on conditions of anonymity. "If Bumrah plays Asia Cup and suppose India plays the final, no way can he play against West Indies at Ahmedabad. Obviously the question arises, do you need Bumrah against West Indies or he plays Asia Cup after a month's break and plays the two Tests against South Africa. That call, Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir will have to take," the source added. Bumrah is not expected to play many ODIs till the T20 World Cup at home.
