A Captain Really Wanting To Show That...: Ricky Ponting Reacts To Shubman Gills Out Of Character Aggression During Lords Test
Ahead of the crucial fourth Test at Old Trafford starting on Wednesday, legendary captain Ricky Ponting has given his verdict on India skipper Shubman Gill's on-field aggression during the Lord's Test against England. With the series tied at 1-1 ahead of the Lord's Test last week, the closely fought third Test between England and India witnessed plenty of drama on the field. This included an animated flare-up between India skipper Shubman and England openers towards the end of the third day of the Test. After managing to equal England's first innings total of 387, India wanted to squeeze in two overs in the remaining six minutes of play. However, that wasn't possible as the English openers took their time to get ready, and the India captain got involved in a heated discussion with Zak Crawley and then Ben Duckett. ICC Hall of Famer Ponting understood why Gill's aggressive posturing at Lord's was met with surprise. "That was a little out of character from what I've known from Shubman in the past. I am sure everyone that was there watching it and I know you would know him quite well, that's not what he's generally like," Ponting said in the latest episode of The ICC Review podcast. However, the former Australia captain said it was a case of Gill taking a stand for his team in the scenario. "That's the captain standing up for his team, that's a captain really wanting to show that it's his team now and this is the way that we're going to play the game, and also, I guess, wanting to give a little bit back," he said. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ICC (@icc) Ponting played Tests in England across four separate tours, and twice as captain (2005 and 2009). He feels that the pressures of such a high-profile tour could get to a skipper. "The UK can be a hard place to play. The crowds, as much as they love their game, can be as hostile a place to play as anywhere in the world. The media there, when you're in a big series, when it's an Ashes series or when it's England and India, the media always feel like they're right on top of your back as well," the former Australian skipper said. Ponting also felt that during a high-intensity Test - which India narrowly lost by just 22 runs - Gill needed to assert himself and lead with authority, much like former captain Virat Kohli often did. The 50-year-old also believes that in the middle of a high-octane Test, which India eventually lost by merely 22 runs, Gill needed to make his presence felt on his players, in a manner similar to former skipper Virat Kohli. "I think that's him starting to put his stamp on his team. And a lot like Virat (Kohli) did, similar ways like that. Rohit (Sharma) probably was never as outwardly aggressive, I guess, especially to opposition players," Ponting said. "I know he (Rohit) would quite often get aggressive with his teammates and try to bring the best out of them that way. But I love watching Shubman stand up for what he thought was right in the game last week," he concluded. With the series 2-1 in favour of the hosts, England and India will square off in the fourth Test in Manchester, starting on July 23.

Rishabh Pant shouldn't play in Manchester if he can't keep wickets: Ravi Shastri
Former India cricketer and head coach Ravi Shastri feels Rishabh Pant shouldn't play the fourth Test against England if he isn't fit to do wicketkeeping. Pant injured his finger on Day 1 of the third Test and didn't keep wickets for the remainder of the match, with Dhruv Jurel filling in his place. With India trailing 1-2 in the five-match series, the management is hell-bent on playing Pant in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Ravi Shastri has opposed the idea, saying that it might worsen his injury. Recently, India's assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate has revealed that Pant is likely to feature in the fourth Test as a pure batter given his rich form, but Shastri feels that the wicketkeeper batter should rest and get ready for the last Test at the Oval."He'll have to field, and if he fields, that'll be worse. With the gloves, at least there's some protection. Without gloves, if he gets something that stings him there, then it won't be very good. It'll worsen the injury. He'll have to keep and he'll have to bat. He can't do one of the two. If it's a fracture, he should rest and be ready for The Oval. But if not, he has about nine days to recover," Shastri told ICC. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ICC (@icc) Pant has been in sensational form in the ongoing series, having etched his name in the history books by becoming just the second wicketkeeper in the history of the game to score centuries in each innings of a Test match, during the first match in Leeds. He scored 134 (178), with the help of 12 fours and six sixes and followed it up with a knock of 118 (140), studded with 15 fours and three sixes in 2nd further scored a brilliant 65 in the second innings of the second Test, helping India extend their lead. India eventually won the match by 336 runs to level the series 1-1. In the third Test, he played another crucial innings of 74 (112), stitching another crucial stand with KL Rahul. Pant is the second-highest run scorer of the series so far with 425 runs from three matches at an average of 70.83 with two centuries and as many fifties. He will look to continue his form in the fourth Test set to be played from July 23 as India look to level the series.- EndsMust Watch

South Africa Return To Lords For More Celebrations After WTC Title Win
South Africa's victorious ICC World Test Championship (WTC) squad returned to the scene of their famous win on Monday when they descended on Lord's for more celebrations. The entire 15-player squad was on hand with the famous mace at the Home of Cricket, just two days after they completed a historic five-wicket win over Australia in the World Test Championship Final. The players and support staff were in good spirits as they came together for one last look at Lord's before they return to South Africa and all-rounder Wiaan Mulder said the celebrations had been spirited. "It's been a very, very good couple of days. Celebrations like I haven't had before, so as a team I think we're super chuffed and no better place to do it than at the Home of Cricket," Mulder told ICC Digital at Lord's. & View this post on Instagram A post shared by ICC (@icc) Mulder admitted he had hardly slept since arriving in London, with nerves leading into the Ultimate Test and the celebrations post-match still taking their toll. And while Mulder revealed all the players and support staff had joined in the frivolity, he said it was a group of players from Western Province that had led the way. "I think it's the Western Province crew, to be honest," Mulder said when asked who had been the best celebrators. "All of them celebrate victory very, very hard. Kyle Verreynne, Dane Paterson, David Bedingham and (batting coach) Ashwell Prince are kind of the leaders of our vibe team, so they have been the guys that have gone all out," he added. Notably, Mulder played alongside Australia captain Pat Cummins and star batter Travis Head at Sunrisers Hyderabad during the IPL 2025 and the 27-year-old said he enjoyed getting to know the pair during his brief stint with the franchise. "Heady is one of the top blokes around and Patty is also a great guy. I spent some time with them at the Sunrisers during the IPL and there was a lot of banter," Mulder said. "I trained a lot because I didn't play a lot in the IPL and I spent a lot of time facing Pat and facing Heady (in the nets), so there was a lot of banter coming into the WTC," he added.

'I actually spoke to him (Head) last night on the phone," Mulder said. 'He was chuffed for the way it went for us. 'Obviously, he was broken that they didn't win, but I think overall, the spirit of the game was really as high or as good as it could be. 'You think about the Aussies, you always think about them as being a little bit nasty at times, but I think these guys are true champions. 'And the way they go about it, the consistency that they bring to every single day and every single moment of the game, just shows why they're arguably the best team, best sporting cricketing team to ever play the game," Mulder told the ICC. Aiden Markram shares a drink with fan after WTC Final heroics, turns out he's a friend from school
Aiden Markram is a freshly-minted South African hero, scoring 136 in a remarkable chase at Lord's in one of the most famous fourth-innings batting performances in recent history to seal the World Test Championship with a victory over Australia. Following a determined, powerful display of batting, which earned him the man-of-the-match award, Markram was spotted by camera crews accepting a beer from some South African fans in the boisterous Lord's crowd — maybe one of the most well-deserved beers any person has ever had. Reflecting on the moment afterwards in the press conference, having led South Africa to a first ICC trophy in 27 years and first major tournament win in their history, Markram revealed that the veer was offered by an old friend of his, of which he took full advantage in order to kick off celebrations after a tense match that capped off a two-year long journey. "Yeah that was cool. That was one of my mates from school. He wanted me to come over and I said, 'Flip man, I can't, it's too busy, it's chaos.' And then he was like, 'Oh, here's a beer.' And I was like, 'OK, I'm in,'' said Markram of the moment in the press conference, receiving a round of laughter for his honesty. A post shared by ICC (@icc) The video of the moment shows Markram making his way over from the edge of the boundary, where the South African players were enjoying a lap of honour around the home of cricket, over to a group of fans. He then proceeded to embrace his friend, before chugging the beer — a picture that truly got the party started for the Proteas and all their fans who had arrived in droves to London to support their team. 'So, I've had my first one for today and I'm pretty sure there'll be a few more,' said the man without whom this party would never have found solid footing. South Africa's cause for celebration was guided home by Markram, captain Temba Bavuma, and a 9-fer by Kagiso Rabada, three of the more experienced and senior members of a unit who have now gone on a true hotstreak of winning Test matches. Once the raucous celebrations from this historic moment calm down, attention will turn to defending their WTC title, with an eye on many more ICC trophies in the years to come.
