'Sad drunk' Paul Gascoigne collapses at home, rushed to hospital

Paul Gascoigne is recovering in hospital after the former Tottenham and England star collapsed at his home.
Gascoigne was rushed to hospital by his driver and assistant Steve Foster, who found the 58-year-old in a semi-conscious state in his Dorset house.
'Paul is in hospital, which is the best possible place for him to be right now,' Foster told The Sun newspaper.
Gascoigne was reportedly admitted to an intensive care ward after being discovered on Friday, but later moved to an acute medical unit, where his condition is said to be stable.
Foster said Gascoigne would 'like to thank everyone for the support he's received so far from so many old friends who wish him well and want to see him back to his best.'
One of the most naturally gifted footballers of his generation, Gascoigne played for Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio, Rangers, Middlesbrough and Everton.
He was capped 57 times by England, becoming a global star after his brilliant form at the 1990 World Cup in Italy reached a tearful crescendo with his emotional reaction to a yellow card, which would have ruled him out of the final, in a last four loss against West Germany.
Gascoigne also starred for England during their run to the Euro 96 semi-finals, where they again lost to Germany on penalties.
The midfielder's issues with alcohol addiction and depression are well-documented and he has suffered a series of health problems in recent years.
In 2020, Gascoigne said he had turned his life around after having anti-alcohol pellets sewn into his stomach.
But last year, he admitted on the High Performance podcast that he was a 'sad drunk' living in a spare room at the home of his agent.

Desiree Ellis remains committed to Banyana Banyana despite Wafcon struggles

BANYANA Banyana legend Jermaine Seoposenwe with coach Desiree Ellis, played her last match for Banyana Banyana on Friday. | BackpagePix Banyana are set to finish fourth at the Women's Africa Cup of Nations finals which is set to conclude Sunday night after relinquishing their crown. Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis says she'll continue to 'trust the process' as her team turns over a new chapter after an underwhelming continental outing. After getting out of the group stage comfortably, they were not convincing in the knockout stage as they beat Senegal on penalties in the quarter–final and lost 2-1 to arch-rivals Nigeria in the semi-final. Banyana were not at their best in the third/fourth place play-offs either as they lost to Ghana 4-3 on penalties after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time Friday night. Their shortcomings in the crucial stages of the tournament somewhat hinted at the toll the team took prior to the tournament following another bonus row with Safa. Ellis said they were at the tournament to win it during her post-match press conference at Stade El Arbi Zaouli in Casablanca though. 'Everyone that goes to a tournament has the ambition of winning it - Nigeria have been the only country that has defended it, though they didn't at times,' Ellis said. 'Equatorial Guinea won it twice, but we didn't get there - but it was so, so close. I think what happened there (against Nigeria) took a lot out of the players. 'We knew that we were going to play in the play-offs match, but we unfortunately didn't do well today.' Banyana's shortcomings in Morocco have seen some members of the football fraternity call for Ellis to be released, citing that she's out of sorts. This is due to the fact that the team needs a new direction and strategy given that some key players have already called time on their international careers, while others are close to. Jermaine Seoposenwe retired from international football after Wafcon, saying she's taking care of her well-being, while Thembi Kgatlana withdrew from being considered for the event, citing personal reasons. Ellis, though, insists that she's still the right coach to usher Banyana to a new era having been the brains behind Banyana's first qualification for the World Cup in 2019 and triumph at Wafcon in 2022. 'I have been with the team since 2014 as an assistant, 2016 as an acting coach and 2018 as the head coach - so it's a process,' Ellis reflected. 'Unfortunately, the process is always to win. That is the thing with fans, they don't see the bigger picture. So, we trust the process. 'We are also a team in transition. We trust the process, but fans don't trust the process - all they want is results. 'They don't see what you are doing and how the team is evolving, they don't see those things. When you are in the national team, fans want results.'

Kaizer Chiefs player ratings: Who FIRED, who FLOPPED

Kaizer Chiefs suffered another pre-season defeat after going 3-2 to Asante Kotoko in a penalty shootout in the Toyota Cup. The pre-season match, played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday afternoon, finished 0-0 after 90 minutes and penalties were needed to separate the two sides. Amakhosi were the better team overall but failed to take their chances. In the 82nd minute, captain Miguel Inacio missed a penalty after Mduduzi Shabalala was brought down in the penalty box. Who fired for Kaizer Chiefs? Thabo Cele 10/10 Cele orchestrated the midfield alongside Sibongiseni Mthethwa and was by far the best Amakhosi player on the field. He dictated the tempo of the game and allowed the team to play from the back, linking the defence and the midfield, thus forcing Asante Kotoko to starve for possession. Nkosingiphile Ngcobo 9/10 The young attacker has looked like a different player in the past few weeks. He was arguably Kaizer Chiefs' best player in the Netherlands and has now brought his form to South Africa. Ngcobo created space for himself in the midfield and often linked with Glody Lilepo and Mfundo Vilakazi. Flavio de Silva 8/10 The big striker impressed on Saturday after a difficult pre-season in the Netherlands. After failing to score in four matches, the 29-year-old striker has been heavily criticised, however, in front of Khosi fans, he created several chances and linked well with Lilepo and Ngcobo in the first half. Which Kaizer Chiefs players flopped? Miguel Inacio (4/10) The captain had a dreadful game on Saturday. Although he wasn't tested much, he missed two penalties. one during normal play and the other during the shootout. He made a few fouls and was often caught out of position. Lucky for him, the Asante attack was toothless. Wandile Duba (3/10) The young forward was introduced in the second half but failed to make an impact. He had a one-on-one situation but fired straight at the keeper. Duba has not looked lively for Kaizer Chiefs in a while and will likely start from the bench when the team plays their opening league game next month. Lions maul Sharks in dominant Currie Cup opener

The Lions scored seven tries to crush the Sharks 46-5 at Ellis Park, avenging last year's Currie Cup final defeat. Jarod Cairns crossed early to open the scoring before Rabz Maxwane finished off a slick move sparked by Angelo Davids' break. Nico Steyn chipped crossfield for Maxwane to gather and score, giving the Lions a well-earned 10-0 lead inside 20 minutes. The Sharks lacked cohesion and discipline, with winger Phiko Sobahle receiving a yellow card for a deliberate knockdown near halftime. That infringement gifted the Lions a penalty try and a numerical advantage just before the break at a buzzing Ellis Park. Maxwane made full use of the extra space to bag his second try, pushing the Lions into a commanding 24-0 lead. Sobahle prepared to return from the bin when Jean Smith was shown yellow, reducing the Sharks to 14 men again early on. Lions debutant Angelo Davids took immediate advantage, slicing through the broken defence for a well-taken try in front of the home fans. The Sharks struggled to exit their own half and made little headway against a physically dominant Lions pack and lively backline. While Sobahle finally crossed for a late consolation try, the game had long since drifted beyond the visitors' reach in Johannesburg. Rynhardt Jonker burst through the midfield to score before Layton Horn dotted down soon after to compound the Sharks' misery. The Lions showed superior structure, finishing ability and composure as they exacted revenge for last season's heartbreaking Currie Cup final loss. With confidence high, the Lions now shift focus to a testing home fixture against Western Province at Ellis Park next Saturday.
