Gerik bus tragedy: Victims, next of kin told to contact APAD to coordinate insurance claims
According to a statement from APAD, the individuals involved can contact the agency's officer Ameera Mohd Ali via 03-2603 6763 or email ameera@apad.gov.my for further information, as well as to seek assistance at the nearest APAD office.
Based on the agency's records, 37 of the victims are from Terengganu, four from Kelantan, and one each is from Kuala Lumpur and Johor.
"To facilitate the process of verifying information, APAD is also working with UPSI to contact all victims and next of kin involved.
"APAD expresses its sympathy and sorrow over the tragedy that claimed 15 lives and injured several other UPSI students. APAD is committed to ensuring that the welfare of the victims and next of kin is given due attention through a fair insurance claim process," the statement said.
In addition, APAD also said that the agency always monitors the safety aspects of land public transport operations by ensuring compliance with the Service Level Requirements and license conditions that must be adhered to by all operators.
In the early morning incident, 15 UPSI students died when a bus specially chartered from Jertih to return to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak was involved in an accident at JRTB, Gerik.
The accident left 33 other individuals injured, including the bus driver and attendant as well as the driver and three passengers of a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV). - Bernama

Last month, Malaysia was shaken by the tragic deaths of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students in a fatal bus crash. The incident prompted urgent calls for stricter road safety regulations, particularly for bus and lorry drivers. In response, the Road Transport Department recently announced that it will now be mandatory for passengers travelling on express and tour buses to wear seatbelts before departure. Though the ruling may not completely resolve the ongoing issue of reckless driving, it can still help reduce the risk of injury. Unfortunately, not long after the tragic UPSI incident, a couple of road accidents involving buses were reported recently in Genting. Here's what happened: On Wednesday (2nd July), it was reported that a parked tour bus rolled forward and crashed into a road divider and then a pillar at the Genting Mushroom Farm car park. The collision caused damage to both the bus and a nearby taxi. According to reports, the large vehicle suddenly lurched forward after a 45-year-old driver had parked it at the popular tourist spot. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Police were dispatched to the scene after being alerted by members of the public at 12:20pm. Bentong District Police Chief, Superintendent Zaiham Mohd Kahar confirmed the incident and said the case is currently being investigated under Section 43 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving. This latest accident occurred just one week after a previous incident, where a tour bus carrying 25 passengers crashed into a divider while travelling downhill near Jalan Genting-Bentong. According to reports, the crash took place on 22nd June at around 7pm. Fortunately, the driver and two passengers sustained only minor injuries, while the rest escaped unharmed. Bentong District Police Chief, Superintendent Zaiham Mohd Kahar, told reporters that the driver had lost control of the vehicle moments before the crash. With two road accidents occurring in Genting just a week apart from each other, and so soon after the UPSI tragedy, it's becoming increasingly concerning, particularly for those who frequently travel by bus or share the roads with heavy vehicles. Loud boom in Perak could've been natural, says state top cop
IPOH: While a natural explanation is likely, the cause of the loud boom and brief tremor that shook several parts of Ipoh is still being investigated, says the Perak police chief. Datuk Noor Hisam Noordin said the incident, which occurred at around 10.30am on June 18, sparked concern among residents in Chemor, Chepor and Tanah Hitam. 'Initial investigations have not found any evidence of misconduct or unscheduled demolition activity at quarries. 'We have interviewed residents from the affected areas and referred the matter to geologists and the Department of Minerals and Geoscience Malaysia (JMG),' he told reporters during a handover ceremony at the Senior Police Officers' Mess yesterday. 'There is no indication of any misconduct or unscheduled blasting activity. 'It's all natural causes but we are still conducting a thorough investigation,' he said, adding that a similar incident occurred on June 6 last year. 'Such events might happen only once every 10 years. But now we've seen two consecutive cases in June. 'We are studying this phenomenon more closely.' He added that authorities will be calling for a multi-agency meeting involving JMG, quarry operators, the armed forces and other related bodies to discuss the issue in greater depth. 'The public is advised to remain calm and not to speculate. There is no cause for alarm. People can continue with their daily routines as usual,' he said. On a separate matter, Noor Hisam said the police have recorded a statement from a teacher accused of posting offensive remarks about the tragic accident that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students on the East-West Highway in Gerik. 'We have already recorded the statement and seized his mobile phone to assist in the investigation. 'The investigation paper is almost complete, pending the medical report from the hospital. 'Once received, we will submit the case to the deputy public prosecutor for further action,' he said. Earlier, a Facebook account bearing the name 'Khalid Yunus' had sparked public outrage after it wrote that the 15 students had 'died in disgrace'. The post has since been deleted and the account holder has posted a public apology, claiming he suffered from schizophrenia. State education, higher education, youth and sports committee chairman Khairudin Abu Hanipah later confirmed that the account belonged to a secondary school teacher. The Perak Education Department is also preparing a full report on the matter.
