The sale took place of a 21-acre holding at Robertstown, Shanagolden, Co Limerick. at GVM's auction rooms in central Limerick City, on July 2, with Tom Crosse wielding the gavel. This was a hybrid auction, with bids also coming in online via LSL.com.
Between online bidders and bidders present, there were five participants in all.
The property was a prime piece of Golden Vale grassland, with 75m of road frontage, south of the N69, 3km southeast of Foynes and 30km west of Limerick City.
'The holding is flat in nature and of good quality,' said Mr Crosse. 'It's set out in permanent pasture and is ideal for all types of farming use.'
Bidding opened at €210,000. The property was formally placed on the market at €310,000. Several bids later, the gavel fell on a price of €382,000, or €18,100/acre.
Tom Crosse was delighted with the price obtained, saying it 'far exceeded the anticipated selling price… The end bidder was online and bought in trust, we believe, on behalf of a local farmer.'
Mr Crosse further added the Adare/Foynes bypass was now beginning to positively influence local land prices, as affected landowners endeavour to replace parcels they have lost to accommodate the new roads.

Supreme Court upholds €75,000 award to businessman mistakenly identified as a tax defaulter
A publisher has lost its Supreme Court appeal over a jury's award of €75,000 damages to a businessman over an article in the Limerick Leader which mistakenly named him as a tax defaulter. The appeal raised important issues concerning the nature and scope of the defence of qualified privilege under the Defamation Act 2009 and the common law. On Thursday, the five-judge court said the defence would only apply to mass media publications in 'exceptional' circumstances, including reports of judicial and parliamentary proceedings, and is limited to 'fair and accurate' reports. None of those circumstances applied to the June 2016 article in the Limerick Leader, published by Iconic Newspapers Ltd, Mr Justice Maurice Collins said when dismissing Iconic's appeal against the €75,000 award made by a High Court jury to William Bird after finding he was defamed in the article. READ MORE After the Court of Appeal dismissed Iconic's appeal against the jury's decision, the Supreme Court agreed to hear a further appeal in relation to the nature and scope of the qualified privilege defence and its relationship to other defences. Iconic had pleaded the words complained of were published on an occasion of qualified privilege. It pleaded that, acting in good faith, it published the article as part of its lawful and legitimate duty to report on matters of public interest, namely settlements made with Revenue. In the Supreme Court judgment, Mr Justice Collins said the context behind the 2009 Act was the need to balance competing constitutional values, the State's ability to vindicate the good names of citizens on the one hand, and the rights of citizens to freely express their convictions and opinions, and the media's liberty of expression, on the other. While qualified privilege can apply across a wide variety of circumstances, it applies to statements made 'in the discharge of some public or private duty', he said. The defence represents a 'delicate and sensitive balance' given the risk of reputational harm that can be caused be honest error, he said. The key concept is reciprocity between the duty and/or interest on the part of the speaker and listener respectively, although some instances of qualified privilege might be difficult to strictly rationalise on that basis. Only in exceptional circumstances will qualified privilege apply to communications to the world at large, he said. Such circumstances included replies to public attack and reports of judicial, parliamentary or other proceedings. In relation to such proceedings, it is not the source, but rather the 'nature' of those, or other matters in which the public is interested, that provides a basis for a defence. The defence of privilege in such circumstances was limited to fair and accurate reports and none of those circumstances applied in the Iconic case. In all jurisdictions other than the US where media publications can enjoy protection from being sued, they are subject to additional conditions beyond the requirement for honest belief/absence of malice, such as requirements the publication was 'reasonable or responsible'. The article in question, in its reference to Mr Bird, was 'materially inaccurate', the judge said. it had wrongly linked him to three companies in the defaulters' list with which he had no association. He was identified in the article as a result of a mistake made by the journalist who wrote it and that mistaken identification involved 'a significant lack of care' Iconic could not avail of qualified privilege in this case and its appeal must be dismissed on that point, he held. Mr Bird, the judge said, was entitled to his costs at High Court level, not at Circuit Court level as the trial judge had ordered. A proper application of the High Court judge's costs discretion would mean observing the €75,000 award was at the boundary of the High Court's jurisdiction and bringing his case in the Circuit Could would have carried a significant risk that Mr Bird would have been under-compensated, he said.

Tailteann Cup final the latest rung of Limerick's ladder to consistency and stability
Stable. Sustainable. Successful. The above is no corporate speak. It is no aspirational jargon thrown out so as to give the impression that a plan is in place. The above is Jimmy Lee's vision for Limerick football. Seventy minutes from the end of his second term, how is that vision progressing? 'It is going in the right direction. We have boxes ticked, others still need to be,' says Lee. Making Limerick football a stable entity carries obvious reasoning. It is currently a peak-and-trough entity. Altitude peaks and sinking troughs, at that. Three League promotions and two relegations in the past six seasons. Four managers in the past four seasons. A 17-game winless League run spanning three seasons, followed by a 12-game League and championship run where they've only lost once. This constant yo-yoing has an easily identifiable root cause. When Jimmy was appointed in August 2023 and began assembling a dressing-room, he found that 19 of that year's panel would be unavailable for his debut 2024 campaign. From '24 to this year, 16 of the 36 did not carry on. Foundations laid from December to summer are being hammered in the off-season. The rebuilding cycle is in constant spin. 'You might have two, three, or four that step away at the end of this year, but we'll be pushing to see if we can avoid it in total. I know lads have given a length of service, but you'd always be hoping they will take one more leap of faith. 'The vision would be to make Limerick football sustainable year-on-year. But there are stepping stones along the way, such as to keep lads coming back in the door, to win a Tailteann. "The ultimate vision is to have a product you can deliver year-on-year within your capabilities.' A consistent product. That was Jimmy's 2025 vision. 'Last year, we were all over the place. We were training in Knocklong some nights, you were in Rathkeale others. With Micheál's [Cahill, coach] knowledge of surfaces and player physique, we based ourselves out of UL's all-weather surface this year. "We knew there would be a six-to-seven-week familiarisation period where lads would be getting stiff and sore, but it was smooth sailing after that. 'We would have been without places if we didn't have UL. We'd train once a week in Rathkeale on grass, but every other session was in UL, video analysis, the works. We didn't come out of there until April.' Winning the Tailteann Cup has been a means to an end for all previous winners. Just look at where Meath are two years after second-tier success. Even Down gave this year's top-tier a right rattle. You might think Limerick are different. They are, of course, without All-Ireland football championship silverware at any level since the 1896 Sam Maguire win. 'It's not the be-all-and-end-all,' Lee says of Saturday. 'You'd go into Sam Maguire, but our focus next year would really be on Division 3. 'Back when Stephen Lucey and Pa Ranahan were playing, under Liam Kearns, you were riding the crest of a wave, we almost won a Munster final here against Kerry [in 2004]. But yet and all then you went down. 'It is taking them peaks and troughs out of the way because where you want to go and maintain is a flat line, and you look no further than our neighbours Clare, seven seasons in Division 2. 'On the pathway of our journey, it is massively important to Limerick football to be in a national final. But it is beyond that and beyond that again.'
