Titans announce John Fassel as special teams coach among staff changes
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans have hired veteran assistant John Fassel as their special teams coordinator among some changes to coach Brian Callahan's staff announced Monday.
Fassel replaces Colt Anderson, who lasted only one season on the job as special teams coordinator. Fassel will be joined by Rayna Stewart, who followed him from Dallas as assistant special teams coach. The Titans also hired Tony Oden as passing game coordinator and cornerbacks coach on defense. Luke Stocker has been promoted to tight ends coach.
Tennessee also announced that Chris Harris, who had been the passing game coordinator and cornerbacks coach, tight ends coach Justin Outten and assistant special teams coach Anthony Levine had expiring contracts and won't return.
Fassel worked with the Cowboys between 2020 through the 2024 season, helping Dallas rank among the NFL's best on special teams. Three of his players earned six Pro Bowl berths, including returner KaVontae Turpin and kicker Brandon Aubrey this season. The Cowboys set an NFL record in averaging 32.1 yards per kickoff with Turpin leading the league with 33.5 yards per kickoff return. He also had a 60-yard punt return. Aubrey was second in field goals made.
Fassel also has been special teams coordinator for the Rams between 2012 and 2019 and the Raiders between 2009-2011. He was the Rams' interim head coach for the final three games of the 2016 season. He started as a special teams assistant with Baltimore in 2005 through 2007 and was assistant special teams coordinator in 2008 in Oakland before being promoted. The son of late NFL coach Jim Fassel also was head coach at New Mexico Highlands from 2003 to 2004.
Stewart worked with Fassel the past three seasons in Dallas. This is his third stint with the NFL franchise that drafted him in the fifth round in 1996. He also played for Miami and Jacksonville before going into coaching in 2007. Then-Titans coach Jeff Fisher hired him as a defensive quality control coach in 2009. Stewart also worked at Vanderbilt between 2015 and 2018. He went to Green Bay as special teams assistant in 2019 through 2021 before going to Dallas.
Oden has 19 years of NFL experience coaching and eight more in college. He spent the past four seasons with the New York Jets as senior defensive assistant for cornerbacks. He also has coached with San Francisco in 2020, Miami in 2018-2019, Detroit between 2014-17, Tampa Bay in 2013, Jacksonville (2012), New Orleans between 2006-2011 and Houston in 2004-2005.
Stocker started with Tennessee as an offensive assistant in 2023 under then-coach Mike Vrabel. Callahan had Stocker helping Outten with tight ends in 2024, and now he replaces Outten. Stocker played 11 seasons in the NFL with Tampa Bay, Tennessee, Atlanta and Minnesota after being a fourth-round draft pick in 2011 by the Buccaneers.

Nyheim Hines is back in the NFL Two years after a jet-ski collision left him with a torn ACL and threatened to end his football career, Hines has agreed to sign with the Los Angeles Chargers, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. Terms of the deal weren't initially reported. But Hines is back in an NFL training camp after a two-season absence from playing football. Hines joins a Chargers backfield that features first-round rookie Omarion Hampton and former Steelers Pro Bowler Najee Harris. Hines projects as a third-down back and pass catcher out of the backfield who can also return kicks if he ultimately makes the 53-man roster. Hines, 28, last played for the Buffalo Bills in 2022. The Bills traded for Hines midseason that year in a deal that sent running back Zack Moss to the Indianapolis Colts. The first-place Bills added Hines as a change-of-pace weapon to a backfield that already featured James Cook and Devin Singletary. A third-down back with more career receiving yards (1,778) than rushing yards (1,202), Hines played sparingly in Buffalo's offense in nine games for the remainder of the season. He was a force on special teams and returned two kickoffs for touchdowns in a single game in a season-finale win over the New England Patriots. Jet-ski collision threatened Hines' career Hines was expected to take on a larger role for the Bills in 2023 in his first full season after Singletary left for the Houston Texans in free agency. But the offseason jet-ski collision sidelined him for the entire season. Just before training camp in 2023, Hines was sitting stationary on a jet ski when another rider on a jet ski collided with him, according to the Associated Press. The collision left Hines with a torn ACL in his left knee. He spent the entire 2023 season on injured reserve. Hines then signed with the Cleveland Browns prior to the 2024 season, but was never elevated to the active roster while still recovering from the injury. The Browns released him in February. Hines worked out for the Chargers on Monday and impressed them enough to earn a contract. He'll join a run-focused offense led by offensive coordinator Greg Roman, who previously oversaw the Baltimore Ravens' run-heavy attack before joining the Chargers last season. A fourth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Colts, Hines played his first 3 1/2 NFL seasons for Indianapolis.

Why the Cowboys hold training camp in Oxnard, California
The Dallas Cowboys began their offseason training camp on Monday as the franchise gears up for another run at a Super Bowl in 2025. There are certainly some major storylines as the Cowboys begin camp, including the status of star defensive end Micah Parsons, who is currently negotiating a new contract with the team but still arrived at training camp on Monday. It should be an exciting few weeks as Dallas' camp gets underway in sunny *checks notes* southern California? That's right. Every season since 2012 (with the exception of the COVID-19 season in 2020), the Cowboys have held their training camp in Oxnard, California. The team has held 18 camps overall in Oxnard since 2001 after previously holding camp in California from 1963-89. So, why does Cowboys owner Jerry Jones opt to move his team across the country for camp? There are a few reasons. The weather is the obvious one. Holding camp in California rather than Texas in July allows the Cowboys to practice outside and, therefore, have more fans in attendance. There are other reasons, as well, such as added revenue streams and appealing to Dallas' wide-reaching fan base. Dallas even manages to bring some star power into the building occasionally, as it did in 2022 when Jamie Foxx made an appearance at the team's facilities. The tradition doesn't seem likely to go away any time soon, either. Earlier this month, the team agreed on a five-year deal to keep Dallas' training camp in Oxnard through 2030. While holding your offseason training camp on the other side of the country isn't exactly typical in the NFL, it's a luxury you have when you are a brand as well-known as the Cowboys.
