Australia's internet network signs Amazon satellite service
SYDNEY (Reuters) -The Australian government-owned internet network hired Amazon's untested startup satellite service to provide connectivity to people who cannot access its terrestrial network rather than Elon Musk's Starlink.
From next year, low-Earth orbit satellites owned by Amazon's Project Kuiper will start replacing two Australian government-owned satellites due for decommissioning in 2032, NBN Co and Amazon said in a joint statement on Tuesday.
The deal, for which financial terms were not disclosed, is designed to give high-speed internet to some 300,000 homes and businesses that NBN's terrestrial network does not reach. The thousands of low-Earth orbit satellites are connected to each other through optical links and communicate with antennas and other connection points on the ground.
The deal represents a missed opportunity for Starlink, by far the world's biggest provider of such network services and which already has more than 250,000 customers in Australia, according to industry data. Australia's two biggest telecoms providers sell Starlink residential connection dishes and some government entities, including the Australian Electoral Commission, also have contracts with the company.
Starlink, a unit of Musk's SpaceX rocket company, now has 8,000 fast-orbiting satellites since it began launching them in 2019, while Amazon's service has just 78 since its first launch in April. NBN and Amazon said Project Kuiper would ultimately have more than 3,200.
NBN said the decision followed a rigorous procurement process, but did not say why it had chosen the Amazon service.
Starlink was not immediately available for comment.
"It is true that Amazon Kuiper has not launched services yet in Australia or globally, but they are reportedly pumping in about $15 billion into that programme," said Gavin Williams, chief development officer for regional and remote services at NBN.
"We have every confidence that we've got a partner in Kuiper that will do what they say they're going to do," he added in an interview.
Asked if Musk's ownership of Starlink played a part in the decision, Williams said only that NBN supplied critical infrastructure with regulatory and legal obligations and "technical, operational, and commercial imperatives that fall into that consideration were contemplated and ventilated through the procurement process."

It can be tricky to find earbuds that'll let you do both, but it's not impossible. In fact, if you know what you're looking for, you can even get some of the best earbuds with big money off. Right now, Amazon has a deal on that knocks a hefty 32% off Apple's AirPods Pro 2 Earbuds, which means they're just $169 right now. That's an impressive discount, and one that's not likely to be beaten any time soon. There's no telling how long this deal will actually last though, so keep that in mind. See at Amazon Anyone who owns an iPhone should be keeping an eye on this deal to see if they can afford it, because there are few options better than these. You can still use them with other phones and devices too, but there's no doubt that you'll get the best experience possible if you're an Apple fan. The AirPods Pro 2 Earbuds boast better sound quality than just about any other earbud or headphone options Apple has ever put out, and along with that, they're packed full of great features as well. The noise control is a huge win here, and allows them to be useful in loads of situations. You can completely shut everything out using active noise-cancelling, which makes them amazing for workouts or commutes, but the transparency mode helps you stay aware of your surroundings, just in case you're walking somewhere, you're at work, or any other situation where you need to keep some awareness around you. This is all powered by the H2 chip, which massively boosts accuracy, but also means that you can make calls using them, and the AirPods will actively isolate and transmit your voice for clearer sound clarity there too. They have an amazing battery life too, and can even be customized to fit you better, thanks to four different size options in the silicone tips. We adore these earbuds, and anyone who's rocking an iPhone and looking for an audio upgrade would do well to make the most of this deal. They're not going to stay at $169 forever, and you'll kick yourself if you miss out on this chance to save money on them. See at Amazon

Dyson V8 Plus Cordless Vacuum Sold 40K+ Last Month on Amazon, Now the Leftover Stock Is on Clearance
Chores suck! Nobody really wants to spend their time cleaning up their home, whether it's washing the dishes, cleaning up cat litter, putting away toys, or vacuuming the floor. So, it's nice when you can make one of those jobs easier. If you've got a home that needs vacuuming a lot, then investing in a really powerful one should help you out regularly. Right now, you can get your hands on the Dyson V8 Plus Cordless Vacuum while it's 17% off. That brings it down to $390, which is still a fair bit of money, but this is a very good price on one of the best vacuums around. This is a limited-time deal on Amazon though, which does mean there's no way of knowing just how long it'll actually last. See at Amazon The Dyson V8 Plus stands above a lot of the other options on the market for a few different reasons. The most obvious of those is how well it cleans, of course. It has a motorbar cleaner head that helps not only pick up more debris, but also actively untangle things like pet hair from carpets by pulling them out, meaning your floors will be substantially cleaner because of that. While the standard suction mode is good, you can also use a boost button to suck with even more effort, allowing you to tackle tricky spots or floor types with more ease. It also has a filtration system built in that means it actually spits back out cleaner air, which can be a really big help if you're someone who suffers from any kind of allergies, or if you need to do a general deep clean regularly because of smelly dogs… or kids. It's also really lightweight, which means that using it for a long time isn't too tiring, and also that you can use it in trickier places, especially when combined with the extra attachments. The battery lfie can last up to 40 minutes on a full charge as well, which really helsp if you're someone with a big home. Along with that, it's durable thanks to the materials it's made with, which means it comes with a two-year warranty as well. It's got everything anyone could want from a cordless vacuum, but with a higher quality than many others offer. This deal isn't going to last long though, so if you want it at $390, you're going to need to be quick. See at Amazon

15 TikTok Videos About ‘Clankers', a New Slur for Robots
Terms like 'social media,' 'podcast,' and 'internet' emerged years ago as ways to talk about the latest advancements in the world of technology. And over the past month, we've seen some new terms popping up in the world of tech, from clanker to slopper, even if they seem to be mostly tongue-in-cheek at this point. What's a clanker? It's a derogatory word for a robot, a term coined in 1920 for a Czech play about dangerous mechanical men. And given the fact that humanoid robots are still pretty rare in everyday life, the term clanker has emerged as a way to joke about a future where robots face discrimination in jobs and relationships. That's what the folks of TikTok have been doing with some frequency since the word started to spread widely online in early July. As io9 reported Monday, clanker as a slur actually originates from the Star Wars universe, starting with the 2005 video game Republic Commando and becoming more popular with the Clone Wars animated series in 2008. But the term has taken off recently as a way to joke about our uneasiness with new technology in 2025. Some of the videos currently circulating on social media are just directed at robots that show up in daily life already, like the bots that are sometimes cleaning in supermarkets. But other videos imagine what the future will look like, placing the viewer in an era, maybe 20 or 50 years from now, when robots will presumably be much more common. The jokes often use stereotypes of the 20th century around racial integration, mimicking the bigoted responses white people had reacting to civil rights advancements in the U.S. and repurposing them for this version of a future where humans are uncomfortable with a robotic other. Obviously, we don't know how common humanoid robots will be in five, 10, or 20 years. Elon Musk has promised 'billions' of robots will be sold around the globe within your lifetime. And while Musk is often far too, let's say, optimistic about his tech timelines, it seems perfectly reasonable that we will have more humanoid robots walking around in the near future. For his part, Musk has only been showing off teleoperated robots that are closer to a magic trick than visions of the future. But technological change can be scary. And it's interesting to see how content creators channel those fears by imagining a new future where robots are oppressed—something that's incredibly common in science fiction, even before the word clanker was coined. Whatever you think of the term (and there are some people who are uncomfortable with it as coded racism rather than a comment on racism), it's everywhere on TikTok right now. good for nothing cl***ers #groopski #robophobic #futuretech #humanityfirst ♬ Bell Sound/Temple/Gone/About 10 minutes(846892) – yulu-ism project #fyp ♬ original sound – baggyclothesfromjapan Robophobia running rampant in clanker society #robot #fyp #fypage #robophobia #ai #police #cops #robo ♬ Beethoven's 'Moonlight'(871109) – 平松誠 #fyp #pov #robot #skit ♬ Bell Sound/Temple/Gone/About 10 minutes(846892) – yulu-ism project Sorry I just thought you were one of the good ones 🤖❌ #clanker #ai #fypシ #viral #fyp ♬ Bell Sound/Temple/Gone/About 10 minutes(846892) – yulu-ism project All these new gens bro💔🥀 #clanker#ai#robot#clonewars #starwars#clone#jangofett #starwarsfan #obiwan#anakin ♬ Classic classical gymnopedie solo piano(1034554) – Lyrebirds music How would pissed would you get at a robot ump? #baseball #comedy #clanker #pov ♬ original sound – LucasRoach15 Clanker #clanker #clankermeme #robophobic #robot #fyp ♬ original sound – TrendsOnline – TrendsOnline Asked ChatGPT if it liked this video it said yeah ♬ Rust – Black Label Society #clanker #fyp #fypシ #relatable #funny #trending #blowthisup ♬ original sound – 👩🏼🎤 Robophobia running rampant in clanker society #robot #robophobia #fyp #fypage #ai #clanker #robo ♬ Dust Collector – ybg lucas ♬ original sound – Conner Esche These clankers am I right #skit #meme #edit #clanker ♬ original sound – coopermitcchell #pov : You're coming out to your parents in 2050 #ai ♬ original sound – bjcalvillo Clanker #clanker #clankermeme #robophobic #robot #fyp #robots ♬ original sound – TrendsOnline – TrendsOnline Every new era sees an expansion of the tech lexicon. That's just how the march of time works. And it's unclear whether clankers will have any staying power beyond the summer of 2025. Another term, sloppers, has seen a similar rise, a term for people who use generative artificial intelligence for everything. There's just no predicting what new words are going to stick. After all, the internet was almost called the catenet. Language works in really funny ways.
