A Raja asks railway minister to remove Hindi banners from Nilgiris station

Time of India23-06-2025
DMK leader and Nilgiris MP A Raja has written a letter to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, asking him to remove banners written in Hindi from the Udhagamandalam (Ooty) railway station in Tamil Nadu.
He said that one of the quotes on the banners was wrongly credited to freedom fighter Madan Mohan Malaviya, when it was actually said by famous Tamil poet Mahakavi Bharathi.
Raja said the increased use of Hindi at the station has upset many people in the state and led to public protests. He explained that the Nilgiris railway station is over 100 years old and is currently being renovated under the Amrit Bharat Scheme. However, with 90% of the work still pending, banners in Hindi have already been put up, which he said was disrespectful to the Tamil-speaking population.

He reminded the Minister that Tamil Nadu has always valued its language and culture, and has consistently supported a two-language policy (Tamil and English). The use of Hindi in such public places is being seen by many as an unwanted imposition and a political move, he added.
Raja urged the central government to respect the language preferences of Tamil people and not to make Hindi a must in places where it is not needed. He requested the removal of the banners to avoid hurting public sentiments.

Vijay leads TVK meeting, condemns Hindi imposition ahead of Tamil Nadu polls

Actor turned politician Vijay headed the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) State Executive Committee Meeting at the party headquarters in Chennai on Friday. The meeting was crucial ahead of the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections, where several resolutions were passed. TVK State state executive committee noted that the electoral revision is being conducted to increase the pro-BJP votes.(PTI File) The TVK state executive committee said that Union Home Amit Shah's recent comments on the English language have "malicious" intentions and a "direct" assault on Tamil Nadu's two-language policy. The Tamil Vettri Kazhagham mentioned that the party will never accept the imposition of Hindi and the Sanskrit language on Tamil Nadu. The party also condemned the Election Commission of India's decision to conduct electoral revision and stated that the main purpose of it is to reduce minority votes in the state. The Committee noted that the electoral revision is being conducted to increase the pro-BJP votes, which is against democracy. Meanwhile, several other decisions related to TVK head Vijay's outreach program were taken ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections. On July 3, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor turned politician Vijay met family members of Ajith Kumar, who allegedly died during police interrogation in Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu earlier in the month. Vijay demanded a High Court-monitored probe into the alleged custodial death of Ajith Kumar in Sivaganga district, while holding Chief Minister MK Stalin, who is also the state's home minister, responsible for it. "In the Tiruppuvanam Ajithkumar custodial death case, a special investigation team must be formed under the direct supervision of the High Court to conduct an inquiry and deliver a swift judgment!" the TVK chief wrote in a post on X. He claimed that the police department, under the "direct supervision of MK Stalin", acts in a "cruel, utterly inhumane and unjust manner towards ordinary citizens." Vijay also alleged that the state government initially shielded the accused and only took action after the High Court intervened. "This incident starkly highlights the extent to which the Tamil Nadu Police Department, operating under the direct supervision of the Home Minister, Mr. M.K. Stalin, acts in a cruel, utterly inhumane, and unjust manner toward ordinary citizens, functioning as an unethical institution. It is widely known that the Tamil Nadu government initially tried to protect the culprits," Vijay's post read.

Not just the US; there is another country that attained independence on July 4

Every year on July 4, the United States lights up in celebration of its Independence Day , marking the country's birth in 1776. But it's not the only nation with significant ties to this date. Across the globe, July 4 also holds deep historical meaning for other countries like the Philippines and Rwanda. In the Philippines, July 4 was once known as Philippine Independence Day, the day the country was officially recognized as a sovereign state by the United States in 1946 after years of colonization. Though the Philippines now celebrates its independence on June 12, the date of its earlier declaration from Spanish rule, July 4 still stands as a landmark in the country's long struggle for freedom. Meanwhile, in Rwanda, July 4 marks Liberation Day, commemorating the end of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. While the country's official Independence Day is July 1, Liberation Day is viewed as equally, if not more, significant, as it is symbolic of Rwanda's rebirth and movement toward unity and healing. So while Americans wave flags and watch fireworks on the Fourth of July, people in other parts of the world reflect on that same date as a powerful moment of hard-earned freedom and national transformation. How was the Philippines historically related to the US? The Philippines was earlier ruled by the United States, as a colony following Spain's surrender in the Treaty of Paris (1898). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Providers are furious: Internet access without a subscription! Techno Mag Learn More Undo This came after decades of struggle, including the Philippine Revolution against Spanish rule in the late 1800s and the Philippine-American War in the early 1900s. Although Filipino revolutionaries had already declared independence on June 12, 1898, the US did not recognise this and instead annexed the country. Filipino leaders continued their push for full sovereignty through diplomatic efforts, resulting in the Philippine Autonomy Act of 1916, which promised future independence. The promise was finally fulfilled on July 4, 1946. However, in 1962, the Philippines officially moved its Independence Day celebrations to June 12, honoring the original declaration of freedom from Spanish rule. Rwanda got freedom from Belgium on July 4 On the other hand, Rwanda celebrates Liberation Day on July 4, which marks the end of the horrific 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Although Rwanda's official Independence Day is July 1, when it gained freedom from Belgium in 1962, Liberation Day carries deep emotional and national significance. The date represents Rwanda's transition into a new era of healing and rebuilding. According to Albert Nzacahinyeretse, Church Empowerment Zone Manager at World Relief Rwanda, 'Independence is a public holiday on the first of July, but its celebration is combined with Liberation Day on the 4th of July. During the event, we celebrate unity, accountability and the nation. The independence holiday is important to us since it helps younger generations to know more about the history of the nation and get involved in developing the country,' as shared in The New Times Rwanda. So, while the US marks its independence with fireworks and festivities, other countries like the Philippines and Rwanda also look to July 4 as a day of hard-won freedom, for their own history and reasons to remember. China-India ties to again take a hit? Beijing warns India on Dalai Lama's incarnation row, says 'Issue must uphold principles of...' China on Dalai Lama issue: China on Friday objected to Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju's remarks that the incarnation of the Dalai Lama should follow his own wishes, urging India to act cautiously on Tibet-related issues to avoid its impact on the improvement of bilateral relations. India should be clear of the anti-China separatist nature of the 14th Dalai Lama and honour its commitments on Xizang (Tibet) related issues, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told a media briefing here responding to a question on Rijiju's comments. China refers to Tibet as Xizang. India should exercise caution in its words and actions, stop interfering in China's internal affairs with Xizang related issues and avoid impact on the improvement and development of the China-India relationship, Mao said. What did Rijiju said? Rijiju on Thursday asserted that the decision on the incarnation of the Dalai Lama would be taken by the established institution and the leader of Tibetan Buddhists himself and no one else. It was the first reaction from a senior Indian government functionary on the comments of the Dalai Lama on his successor. On Wednesday, the Tibetan spiritual leader said that the institution of the Dalai Lama will continue, and only the Gaden Phodrang Trust – founded by his office in 2015 – will have the authority to recognise his future reincarnation. Rijiju's remarks came after China rejected the Nobel Peace laureate's succession plan, insisting that any future heir must receive its seal of approval. Rijiju, a practising Buddhist, and Rajiv Ranjan Singh, a fellow Union minister, are representing the Government of India at the Dalai Lama's 90th birthday celebrations in Dharamshala on July 6. The minister said that the birthday event is a religious function and has nothing to do with politics. What is China's stand? Mao reiterated China's stand that the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama, the second-high priest of Tibetan Buddhism, has to comply with rigorous religious rituals and historical conventions in line with domestic search, lots drawn from a 'golden urn' and the central government's approval. The present 14th Dalai Lama went through this procedure and was approved by the then-central government, she said. The reincarnation of the Dalai Lama must uphold those principles and follow religious rituals, historical conventions, Chinese law and regulations, she said. Mao's comments related to the improvement and development of relations refer to the efforts by both India and China to normalisation of ties after over four years of freeze following the Eastern Ladakh standoff.
