Man killed on luxury cruise ship was 'on stag do' when 'chaos' broke out
The MSC Virtuosa left the port in Southampton on Saturday (May 3) for two nights, and a few hours later, a fight broke out in which a 60-year-old man died.
As the MSC Virtuosa ship was still in British waters when the death occurred, it returned to the UK and police arrested a 57-year-old man from Exeter when the ship arrived back at Southampton, Hampshire on suspicion of murder. The victim's next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist police officers, reports The Mirror.
Passenger Lynda Hardiman-Pearce told MailOnline there were several hen and stag do parties onboard "causing havoc". She added: "On Saturday night we were in a bar onboard and I was chatting to someone whilst waiting to be served. Apparently, the [man] was on a stag do.

Reports suggested the men involved in the incident were part of a party of 20.
Detective Chief Inspector Matt Gillooly, the senior investigating officer, said: "We want to reassure you that this appears to be an isolated incident on board, and we want to thank the crew for their cooperation and assistance with our enquiries."
A spokesperson for MSC Virtuosa added: "Following an incident on board our ship, the relevant authorities were contacted, and we are co-operating fully with their investigations. We are providing full support to those impacted."
According to the MSC's website, the "Virtuosa's namesake comes from the word virtuoso, meaning someone highly skilled in any field of activity, and so MSC Virtuosa was named to pay homage to the skill and expertise of the MSC Cruises architects and shipyard partners at Chantiers de l'Atlantique who designed and built this innovative class of ships. A passenger said the cruise was "full of hen and stag parties causing chaos"

The Maltese-flagged vessel, built in France in 2020, measures 332 metres (1,089ft) long and boasts 18 decks, accommodation for up to 6,334 passengers and 1,704 crew. Virtuosa was due to arrive in Southampton at 6.15am and depart at 8pm.
The ship also boasts a 4D cinema, bowling lanes, a casino, a game arcade, and a Formula 1 simulator. Passengers can also visit a theatre hosting Broadway-style productions, as well as a lounge featuring Carousel Productions at Sea shows.

Mum on death row for killing husband as son watched has 'disgusting' hobby
A British mum is languishing on death row, facing execution by hanging, for the murder of her husband after allegedly drugging his biryani and slitting his throat in front of their nine-year-old son. Ramandeep Kaur Mann, from Derby, was convicted of conspiring with her lover to kill her husband Sukhjit Singh, 34, while they were on holiday in 2016 with their two children, according to the Daily Mail. The judge at her trial at Shahjahanpur District Court determined Mann slit Sukhjit's throat after he fell into a deep sleep - aided by her lover Gurpeet Singh. The gruesome crime is believed to have been driven by financial motives. Prior to his death, Mann had taken out a £2million life insurance policy for her husband and was also set to inherit his property. Mann was found guilty in October 2023, with her son's testimony proving pivotal. Her lawyers are now arguing that her son was 'coached' to provide false evidence that he witnessed the murder, reports the Mirror. Mann's legal team has initiated an appeal with a document alleging that Arjun - now aged 18 - was supposedly instructed what to say by his grandmother Bans Kaur - Sukhjit's mother and Mann's mother-in-law. The Daily Mail reports that the document also alleges collusion with police and relatives to concoct the case against her. Mann has consistently denied committing the murder. She claims she was set up by her husband's family who, she claims, were the actual murderers of Sukhjit as they wanted to stop him from selling land he owned in India. Gurpreet Singh was said to be the killer's lover Currently detained at Shahjahanpur District Jail in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Mann is sharing dormitory-style accommodation with 55 other female inmates. Since her imprisonment, Mann has begun painting and her appeal emerges as fresh images show her displaying her creations whilst meeting local dignitaries, as her standing as an artist grows increasingly recognised. She encountered local officials who toured the jail earlier this year to commemorate India's Republic Day, just weeks following Mann's participation in a Christmas showcase of her prison artwork. Charity representatives have also visited Mann to observe her creations, which include a vibrant array of sketches and paintings, though not everyone welcomes the development of Mann's newfound artistic abilities. Bans Kaur, Sukhjit's mother, told MailOnline: "She does not deserve any applause and has no right to celebrate Christmas or any other occasion while I continue to suffer. I will be speaking to the jail officials about this. For the sins that she has committed, she should be suffering in a cell not being given a chance to paint and have a comfortable life. "She is a cunning and evil woman, and I don't believe for one minute she has changed. This [her art] is all being done for her appeal against the death sentence and is an attempt to win favour with the jail authorities. It's absolutely disgusting. "It's ludicrous to suggest that I 'coached' Arjun and got him to lie. He gave a very lengthy statement which had a lot of detail in it. How could we have got him to fabricate all this? How can you instruct any teenager what to say? We will be contesting this appeal because there is no doubt that this woman murdered my son. "I will battle to the end to secure justice for my son because what this woman did is unforgivable. I don't care how skilled she is at art or what a model prisoner she has become because it means nothing." Would-be spy who dreamt of being like 007 is found guilty of offering to work for Russia
Howard Phillips (65), from Harlow, Essex, intended to help two apparent Russian agents known as Sasha and Dima, including by passing on personal information about former defence secretary Grant Shapps, helping with travel logistics and booking hotels. But Dima and Sasha were undercover British intelligence officers, Winchester Crown Court previously heard. Yesterday, a jury found Phillips guilty under the National Security Act of assisting a foreign intelligence service, following a two-week trial. The jury reached a unanimous verdict after four hours and four minutes of deliberations. Phillips said nothing and shook his head in the dock as the verdict was given. Prosecutors said he intended to assist Russian agents from the end of 2023 until May last year. He offered to 'facilitate the Russians in listening on British defence plans' He offered to pass on Mr Shapps's contact details, as well as the location where he kept his private plane, to 'facilitate the Russians in listening on British defence plans', the trial heard. He was heard telling the men he wanted to work for Russia in exchange for financial independence from the UK. His ex-wife, Amanda Phillips, told the court he 'would dream about being like James Bond' and that he watched films to do with MI5 and MI6 because he was 'infatuated with it'. Ms Phillips told the court she was aware he had applied for a job at the UK Border Force in October 2023, which prosecutors said was part of his bid to assist Russia's intelligence service. ADVERTISEMENT Phillips previously claimed he had contacted the Russian embassy in early 2024 in a bid to track and expose Russian agents to assist Israel. He told jurors he ascertained 'from the onset' that Dima and Sasha were 'definitely not Russian' and were undercover individuals, but he carried on 'playing a role' around these agents in order to 'test the waters'. Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb remanded him in custody and adjourned sentencing to the 'earliest available date' in the autumn. She said she wanted a full pre-sentence report on the defendant before sentencing, as the conviction was for a 'relatively new' offence. Officers from the Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Command arrested Phillips in central London on May 16 last year after he travelled to the capital for a meeting with Dima and Sasha. Detective Chief Superintendent Helen Flanagan said: 'Phillips was unemployed and his primary motivation for wanting to become a spy for the Russian intelligence service was financial reward. 'His conviction should act as stark warning to anyone who thinks that carrying out illegal activity on behalf of a foreign state is an attractive or easy way to earn money. 'The reality is that we take this kind of activity extremely seriously. 'Those involved will be identified, investigated and, like Phillips, will face extremely serious consequences when they are convicted. 'This case is also another successful use of the National Security Act to prosecute someone who was attempting to undermine the security of the UK, and we will continue to use these powers available to us to help keep the public safe.' Phillips was unbothered about the potential detriment to his own country Bethan David, head of the Crown Prosecution Service's counter terrorism division, said: 'This conviction sends a clear message to anyone considering spying for or assisting Russia. 'Howard Phillips clearly outlined the services he was willing to provide for a hostile state. 'From gaining employment within the civil service and applying for security clearance to providing the personal details of the secretary of state for defence, Phillips was brazen in his pursuit for financial gain and unbothered about the potential detriment to his own country. 'It is a criminal offence to assist a foreign intelligence service, regardless of your motive or whether or not you succeed. 'We will always seek to prosecute anyone who poses a threat to the UK.'
