Maha govt to invoke MCOCA against drug dealers and peddlers: CM

Hans India13 hours ago
Mumbai: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday announced in the state Assembly that the government will invoke the provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MOCCA) against drug dealers and peddlers who, despite repeated arrests in drug trafficking cases, are released on bail.
He was replying to a calling attention motion moved by a member in this regard. Fadnavis said currently it is not possible to impose MCOCA in all crimes related to drug trafficking due to the limitations of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
However, the Assembly has given its consent for the amendment, and the state council is expected to pass the same in one or two days. After that, strict action can be taken under MCOCA against those who repeatedly engage in the business of selling drugs.
He said invoking the MCOCA against drug peddlers would help curb increasing smuggling and drug abuse. 'An anti-narcotics campaign is underway in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and a large-scale crackdown against encroachment is underway in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Anti-narcotics units have been set up in every police station. Through this, activities have been accelerated, especially the school outreach campaign is being implemented on a large scale,' he said.
According to the Chief Minister, last year, 379 to 389 schools in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar were visited, and anti-drug awareness was created through 257 workshops. To a question by member Varun Sardesai, the Chief Minister said that crackdowns will be carried out in sensitive areas like Behram Pada.
'Foreign nationals come here, commit crimes and stay until the verdict is announced; their action is delayed. Discussions are underway with the central government in this regard, and an effective system is being prepared so that cases of minor crimes can be taken back and the accused can be ' deported ' after immediate reporting,' he added.
Chief Minister Fadnavis said that in drug trafficking cases, the accused often pretend to be underage. To prevent this misuse, a special campaign against drug smugglers, a drug-free campaign, is underway in the state. The narco coordination mechanism has been restructured, and an anti-drug task force has been set up.
Separate anti-narcotics cells have been set up in all police units to curb the trade and spread of drugs in the state, he said.
The state government on July 9 tabled a bill in the legislative assembly to amend the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), 1999, bringing drug peddlers dealing with commercial quantities of banned narcotic substances under its ambit. It was passed by the state assembly.
The law is being amended as provisions in the existing Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act are insufficient to deal with the menace of commercial drug peddling, said sources in the home department.
The amendment enables police to book drug dealers and peddlers under the MCOCA for stricter punishments.

Maharashtra hotel association held one-day strike to oppose duty hike on alcohol

Maharashtra's hospitality sector, consisting of bar and restaurant-based bars, held a Statewide ''No Alcohol' strike on Monday (July 14, 2025) opposing the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' government's decision to hike excise duty. The Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India (HRAWI) led the strike to counter the Maharashtra government decision to impose a 60% hike in excise duty, a 15% increase in annual FL3 license fees for Financial Year 26, and a 10% VAT on Indian-Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) sold at FL3 outlets. 'The one-day strike to grab the attention of the government and make them understand that the tax hike will make everything expensive, which will affect businesses. Secondly, we want to look at it from the larger perspective of tourism, especially when we have got UNESCO status for so many monuments, State should be competent enough to serve tourist from across the country and from the abroad,' said Pradeep Shetty, member of Hotel And Restaurant Association (Western India) – HRAWI. The duty hike is also seen as a way to fund welfare schemes, including the Ladki Bahin initiative. HRAWI also wrote a letter to Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, referring to the proposed hike, which may cause a sharp rise in the retail prices of alcoholic beverages. It also mentioned the consequences that may cause financial strain on hospitality businesses already struggling with 10% higher license fees, 10% VAT, and rising operational costs. 'The annual excise license fees have also been revised upward by 15%, further compounding the burden on the industry. The final price of the product is likely to become the most expensive in the country, making Maharashtra a less competitive destination for tourists, impacting tourism and hospitality,' said Jimmy Shaw, President of HRAWI, in the letter.

Referring to open-drug peddling in these areas, Mr. Sardesai said, 'Despite open drug peddling, criminals are not caught as police do not have access to these areas. Ponnam bristles at BJP, BRS for bid to stonewall BC ordinance

Hyderabad:Countering BJP MP Laxman over an ordinance for implementing 42 BC reservation in local body polls, BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said that the state government has the power to bring an ordinance when the Assembly is not in session. The ordinance has nothing to do with the bill with the President. He said that the BJP was trying to do politics over the ordinance. Speaking to media persons at Gandhi Bhavan, Ponnam suggested that all BC leaders in BRS and BJP should increase pressure on their high command regarding the implementation of BC reservations. He felt that BJP leaders were shedding crocodile tears over BC reservations and that Laxman was speaking out on the issue to influence the Governor. The Minister lashed out at the BJP and BRS for conspiring to put a damper on the momentum of the ordinance for implementing 42 percent reservations for BCs in local body elections. He urged the BRS and BJP parties to avoid negativity in the historic context of implementing reservations for BCs, as the government was going ahead by keeping in mind all legal aspects as per the court orders. Ponnam said that if Laxman's words carry weight within the party, he should press with the demand that the BC Reservation Bill to be cleared with the President. Ponnam accused the BJP of conspiring to block reservations citing 'Manuvada' tradition. In the past, reservations were brought in the name of the Mandal Committee, and the BJP opposed reservations in the name of Kamandal. He felt that Laxman was furious that the BJP had appointed a new president with a feudal mentality, while there was a discussion about BCs across the state.
