Carlisle mental health worker completes two ultra marathons for charity

A Carlisle-based mental health worker has completed two ultra marathons to raise funds for a cause close to his heart.
Bruce MacLaren, service manager at Kirk House, took on the challenge this month, raising £730 for Mind, a UK mental health charity.
Mr MacLaren, who works at the Northern Healthcare supported living service and has worked with the organisation for nearly four years, said: "Statistically, one in four people are impacted by mental health problems, and not everyone gets the support they need.

"Mind does incredible work, and I'm proud to have done something meaningful to help them."
This is Mr MacLaren's third fundraising effort, following previous campaigns for a learning disability charity and for children affected by cancer.
His latest challenge was driven by both professional dedication and personal loss.

"But I kept going, not just for myself, but for the people I was running for."
Mr MacLaren lost two close friends within a few months, one to suicide and one to a drug overdose.
He said these losses strengthened his resolve to raise awareness of the need for accessible, compassionate mental health care.
Also driven by his role as a father, Mr MacLaren hopes to set a positive example for his young daughter and inspire her to value giving back.
Training for the ultra marathons required significant time and discipline.
Balancing work and family life, he completed long-distance runs in the Lake District on weekends to stay motivated.
Despite persistent knee and foot pain, he pushed through the physical and mental challenges.
Mr MacLaren praised the encouragement from the Northern Healthcare team, especially deputy manager Joe Scott, who supported him during the difficult week between races.
He also received advice from a friend experienced in ultra running and messages of encouragement from colleagues on race day.
One particularly meaningful moment came when a former service user, now a staff member he helped recruit at a previous organisation, made a generous donation.
Although they hadn't worked directly together, the individual had followed Mr MacLaren's progress closely, leaving a lasting impression.
Reflecting on the experience, Mr MacLaren highlighted the connection between physical and mental strength.
He said: "The love and support from people has been exceptional.
"The support from Northern Healthcare has been amazing throughout.
"There have been so many heartfelt comments and messages.
"I've really appreciated every one."
Mr MacLaren hopes his story will inspire others to take small steps toward physical activity as a way to improve mental health.
He said: "It can be hard to get started, but give it ten minutes and let the endorphins do their job.
"You'll feel better and that feeling can carry you through the day."
Although his fundraising for Mind concluded with the ultra marathons, Mr MacLaren isn't finished with personal challenges.
He is now preparing for an Ironman triathlon in August, which will include a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a full marathon.

Hospital patients say 'sort it out' amid 'sickening' parking charge increase

Parking charges have been increased at three Midlands hospitals, and the news has left people less than impressed. Some branded the price hike "sickening" and a "tax on the sick", while others said there were other issues The Royal Wolverhampton and Walsall Healthcare NHS Trusts should "sort out" first. Wolverhampton's New Cross Hospital and Cannock Chase Hospital saw the new fees introduced on Tuesday, July 1, while charges will increase at Walsall Manor Hospital from Monday, July 21. READ MORE: Officers stopped driver for having no licence - then discovered he was wanted for much more serious offences Although those using the car parks for 15 minutes or less will not be charged, the fee for all other stays will increase by 20p, 50p or £1 - full details can be found here. When the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust posted about the news on Facebook, many voiced their frustrations. Janet said: "It wouldn't be so bad if you could get a car space at New Cross." The comment attracted 23 likes and a response from Stacey, who said: "I know, I was driving around for 30 mins trying to find one." Becky added: "There are too many services on one site and not enough parking spaces as it is, yet you put the prices up. "I've ended up either missing an appointment or having to to get to site at least 45 mins before an appointment so I can find a space." Teresa branded it a "tax on the sick", adding: "It's sickening to put prices up again." Maria wrote: "I always get a taxi rather than risk driving to New Cross. It's a lot easier." Natalie also had strong feelings on the matter and made them clear in a lengthy post. She said: "You need to sort your parking out at New Cross before even considering charging more. "Unfortunately I've been coming regularly for four years and it remains horrendous and very stressful, particularly when you leave the house really early, get onto site in plenty of time then spend 45 min trying to park. "The amount of times I've been late for appointments! And often I've been tempted to give up and go home. "This must lead to massive inefficiencies on the already stretched and pressured appointment system. "Your barrier system is awful and quite often won't let cars in thinking it's full when I've seen spaces. "It's no wonder so many park on grass verges, double yellows, blind spots. "It's a mess you really need to sort it out!" There was a similar response over on the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust's post. Kerry tagged a pal and wrote: "Will be more cars outside again." Chloe said: "Would help if you could get a space in the first place. "Maybe put the additional money into a multi-storey at Walsall and more parking at New Cross." In a joint statement, Will Roberts, chief operating officer at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust and Gwen Nuttall, managing director at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, said: "We appreciate any increase is going to affect people using our services and we have avoided doing this for as long as possible. 'But we do have to introduce these slight increases in line with other costs that are rising that the trust has to meet. "We are still offering free parking for people with disabilities and concessions for patients who require lengthy or regular courses of treatment as well as parents whose babies are being cared for on our Neonatal Unit. 'The income raised goes back into the trust and, acting on feedback, we are improving our car parks by looking at how we can offer app payment for example. 'Our teams also offer many more phone and video consultations, where appropriate, so fewer patients are having to travel and incur charges. "This is also having an effect on our clinics meaning those for whom a face to face appointment is necessary are having shorter waits and report a more efficient service.'

As Starmer Struggles, Rayner and Streeting March On

Two prominent Cabinet ministers, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and Health Secretary Wes Streeting have emerged from UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer's worst week in office with their status enhanced. Quality will out. Should the PM stumble and fall during the course of this Parliament, the pair will be prime contenders for his crown. In a Labour administration that appears to have lost its way after only a year in power, Rayner and Streeting each possess both the gift of the common touch and a strong political compass - which is more than can be said for their leader. They would, however, take their party in quite different directions.

Public health pledge aims to tackle obesity rates in Pendle

A public health pledge aims to tackle rising obesity rates. Pendle's Health and Wellbeing Partnership has signed the Healthy Weight Declaration, a formal commitment to promote healthier lifestyles across the borough. The move comes as data shows that 68 per cent of adults in Pendle are overweight or obese, above the national average. Councillor David Whipp, leader of Pendle Borough Council, said: "The Pendle Health and Wellbeing Partnership is the first in England to adopt a district declaration. "Pendle Borough Council is pleased to support this partnership commitment to support healthy weight across local communities." Healthy Weight Declaration, developed by the charity Food Active, was first launched in 2015 and has since been adopted by numerous local authorities across the UK. Pendle's partnership includes Pendle Borough Council, Pendle Leisure Trust, Lancashire County Council, primary care networks, and community organisations. Dr Irfan Chaudry, clinical director of Pendle West Primary Care Network, said: "Signing the declaration as a Health and Wellbeing Partnership is the right approach in Pendle. "By working collectively to review our services and policies to shape healthier environments, we can alleviate pressure on the NHS and social care, whilst supporting our local communities to live well."
