Eddie Howe admits summer has not gone to plan after transfer frustration
Since then the Carabao Cup winners have only added winger Anthony Elanga to their first-team squad – Spain Under-19 international Antonio Cordero is expected to go out on loan after arriving from Malaga.
Howe is looking to strengthen after seeing Callum Wilson reject a new contract offer and reluctantly selling Lloyd Kelly to Juventus and Sean Longstaff to Leeds in a bid to manage financial fair play regulations.
The Newcastle manager is also managing transfer speculation around Alexander Isak, who was allowed to go home and shield from the scrutiny following an Austrian training camp, while the rest of the squad were at Celtic Park for a 4-0 pre-season friendly defeat on Saturday.
And being at the sharp end of the recruitment process has underlined the difficulties of attracting top players to St James' Park.
Newcastle appear to have lost a transfer battle with Liverpool who look set to finalise a deal for Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike.
Howe said: 'My wish was for us to do our business early and we certainly tried, but it wasn't to be.
'We've had a frustrating time in terms of losing targets to other clubs. I'd be very open with that. That's happened on several occasions.
'You just have to accept it. In order for a transfer to really work, in my opinion, the player has to be desperate to come to your club. If we don't get that, the transfer doesn't work.
'We're seeking players that are good enough, that are desperate to come, and that can make the difference that they're in short supply for us.
'We're confident that we can try and get some more players in to strengthen the depth of the squad. We're certainly aware that we need to and we're trying as hard as we can to do that.'
The Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules that influenced the departures of Kelly and Longstaff are also a factor.
'Finances of course play a huge part,' Howe said. 'I think anyone who doesn't think that's true is deluded.
'I wouldn't say is the number one for every player. Every situation is different. But we aren't the biggest payers in the league because we don't generate the most income.
'So we have to fall in line with PSR and we have to be very smart with what we do. And so we have to control the wages of the players that we have and that all plays a part in who we can attract.'
Howe's frustration has been compounded by being central to those attempts following the departure of Mitchell, which came out of the blue.
'My phone exploded,' Howe said. 'I was enjoying my second day of my holiday and that quickly went sour.
'It was a complete surprise to me. And a big disappointment because we had stability, we were planning the summer ahead and then that's a big upheaval internally that we've been through before with Dan Ashworth leaving.
'It's been a busier summer in that respect than I wanted. Naturally with Paul leaving, that left a hole in terms of that role. And of course someone in that role protects the manager from a lot of things. And of course his departure left that open for me to do some things that I wouldn't have normally done.
'The summer certainly wasn't a relaxing one for me to switch off and see what happens.'

Man Utd sign off on goalkeeper loan transfer amid Emi Martinez frustration
Manchester United have a decision to make over their goalkeeping department with Andre Onana facing an uncertain future but one deal has already been confirmed by the Red Devils Manchester United goalkeeper Radek Vitek has signed a new contract with the Red Devils before completing a loan move to Bristol City. The 21-year-old is a product of the club's academy and has regularly been afforded chances to train with the first team at Carrington. But instead of joining the side on their pre-season tour, Vitek has penned a new deal until the summer of 2028 and straight away moved to Championship side Bristol City on a season-long loan. The Czech Republic youth international has previously had spells on loan with Accrington Stanley and Austrian side Blau-Weiß Linz. On completing his move to Ashton Gate, Vítek said: 'I'm really excited, for me the Championship is a new level. More games is a big positive for me and I can't wait to get to know all the players and staff better.' Vitek will now hope to earn more experience having been tipped for big things by Academy lead goalkeeping coach Tommy Lee. He said: "Radek has done great out there in Austria. 'He got an injury early on but recovered extremely well and played really well. He has got really good experience there. I think we often use Radek as an example to some of the younger goalkeepers in the Academy. 'He is a player who maximises every part of the programme to ensure he is the best he can possibly be. Nutrition, gym, analysis. He is the consummate professional and that is going to take him, I believe, to the top level. "He is a talented boy and that needs to be said. He's 6ft 6ins and that always helps! For the other lads, their challenge is to be as good as Radek and do everything he does and more. He is a great example of someone who does that." Vitek's departure comes amid uncertainty within the goalkeeping ranks at Old Trafford. Current number one Andre Onana 's future is up in the air following a tricky couple of campaigns during his time with United. Ruben Amorim's side have been linked with a host of potential replacements including Aston Villa star Emi Martinez. United have already lodged a loan bid for the 2022 World Cup winner but that was rebuffed by the Midlands side. Senne Lammens of Royal Antwerp has also emerged as a potential option for United, albeit would be a far less experienced option that Martinez. Ramsdale 'a capable keeper' but 'more important areas to strengthen'?
We asked for your views on Newcastle opening talks with Southampton with a view to signing England goalkeeper Aaron are some of your comments:Steven: I really hope we don't waste our money on Ramsdale. He's not a marked improvement on what we've got - arguably worse. We need to prioritise signing Sesko and Wissa, as well as replacing Longy [Sean Longstaff] and bringing in a new centre-back, especially with Botman's worrying injury Not a priority in my mind. Other positions need be covered first, especially if they are daft enough to let Isak We desperately need a decent goalkeeper. Ramsdale could fit the bill and will improve with a strengthened defence in front of him. Pope creates nervousness for players and fans alike and his ability with his feet is painfully poor. Dubravka is good in fits and starts and considers he should be number one. Trafford made a mistake moving to Manchester City, something he'll regret in the coming years. Sign Ramsdale Ramsdale is a quality goalkeeper! Under Howe he could even eclipse Pickford. But Pope is also quality. If Ramsdale is being brought in as the number one then I hope we have the decency to sell Pope so we don't ruin his career. Karius and Ruddy are sufficient From what I've seen, Ramsdale is a capable keeper at his best. Hopefully if he does sign, he can show some of the form he achieved as Arsenal's number one. What remains to be seen is whether his distribution - Pope's weak spot - is worth the long-term investment or whether he's a stop-gap until we find the next long-term replacement for our ageing Ramsdale is better with his feet than Pope - so would align with the philosophy. But I like my keepers to save first and worry about passing second. As we tend to give a lot of chances away, not sure Ramsdale would gain us as many points as We don't need Ramsdale as he is on a par with Pope and Dubravka. If we are going to buy a keeper then it should be an upgrade and not an equivalent. We have more important areas to strengthen.

Tottenham youngster Mikey Moore could be set for Rangers loan
Rangers have been tipped to sign Tottenham winger Mikey Moore on a season-long loan. The 17-year-old was left out of new manager Thomas Frank 's 29-man squad for the pre-season trip to Hong Kong, remaining behind on Sunday as his team-mates departed for the Far East. Moore was left behind as he is expected to leave the club on loan and Rangers have reportedly emerged as favourites for his signature. The teenager has made 21 first-team appearances for Spurs and scored his first goal in a 3-0 win over Elfsborg on the way to his team's Europa League success. The wide player stayed on the bench as Ange Postecoglou's side beat Manchester United in the final in Bilbao. He then represented England in the Under-19 European Championship. While Rangers are hoping to sign a teenager from the Premier League, they have lost two others. Newcastle have announced that they have signed 16-year-old Scotland youth internationals Oliver Goodbrand and Alfie Hutchison from Rangers for their Under-18 squad. Defender Goodbrand was a regular for Rangers Under-18s and made his B team debut in a Glasgow Cup win over Partick Thistle. Hutchison, who scored two goals in another Glasgow Cup triumph over Queen's Park, had joined Rangers from Hearts 12 months ago. Newcastle academy director Steve Harper said on his club's website: 'Our recruitment team deserve great credit for bringing Alfie and Oliver to the club and we're confident they'll benefit from the environment we've created here.'
