Putrajaya approves RM6.6m for slope repairs at Kelantan water treatment plant
Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud said the repair works were necessary following a landslide that occurred last November.
He said the state government had promptly submitted an application to Putrajaya after the incident, demonstrating its commitment to protecting public welfare.
"In response to the incident, the state government approved an initial allocation of RM235,000 to finance two studies by the Public Works Department, a soil investigation and a detailed topographic survey, aimed at assessing the full extent of the damage and planning remedial works.
"The state's prompt action was well received by the federal government, which subsequently agreed to provide the multi-million ringgit allocation for the repair works.
"We are deeply grateful to the federal government for this meaningful approval.
"We will ensure the issue is resolved swiftly in the interest of the people," he said in a Facebook post.
Nassuruddin said the landslide, triggered by continuous heavy rainfall on Nov 26, 2024, caused a 130-metre ground movement that severely damaged the sheet pile structure at the water treatment facility.
He said the incident also resulted in the rupture of both raw and treated water pipelines, and posed serious risks to key infrastructure, including the chlorine control room, chemical storage tanks, and a Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) substation.
He said the matter reflects the spirit of mature and constructive politics, as well as strong federal-state cooperation in addressing issues that affect the rakyat.
"The people's voices will continue to be brought forward with sincerity and responsibility.
"This is a clear example of effective federalism in action, carried out for the common good," he said.

Top court defends right to assembly
PUTRAJAYA: The Federal Court ruled that punishing individuals who failed to notify the police five days in advance before organising a peaceful assembly was in conflict with the Federal Constitution. Sinar Harian reported that the decision was made unanimously by a panel of five judges led by Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, who ended her public service yesterday. According to her, Section 9 (5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, which provides for a fine for failure to give advance notice, was a form of prohibition, rather than a restriction permitted under Article 10 (1) (b) of the Federal Constitution. 'This section is a form of disproportionate interference with the people's right to assemble peacefully,' she said when delivering the decision. The decision follows a constitutional challenge filed by Mandiri executive director Amir Abdul Hadi, who was charged in 2022 for failing to submit a five-day notice to the police before holding a protest in front of the Sogo shopping complex in Kuala Lumpur. The protest on Aug 14, 2022, involved about 200 people who demanded that the minister responsible for the failure of the littoral combat ship (LCS) project be fired or prosecuted. Amir has been charged under Section 9(1) of the same Act, which mandates the provision of advance notice, and faces a maximum fine of RM10,000 in accordance with Section 9(5). He 'challenged the validity of the provision, and the High Court referred the legal question to the Federal Court for a decision. In the decision, the Federal Court also ordered the ongoing criminal proceedings against Amir to be returned to the High Court and disposed of following the latest judgment.

MCMC investigates individual over racist social media post in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has taken action against an individual for uploading racially offensive content on social media. The commission confirmed that a statement was recorded and a mobile phone along with a SIM card were seized to assist in the investigation. The offensive post is believed to be linked to the recent appointment of a new Lieutenant General in the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF). Authorities stated that the content contained racial remarks that could provoke unrest and threaten national unity. 'Following this incident, the individual was called in to give his statement and assist in the investigation,' MCMC said in a statement. The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a penalty of up to RM500,000 in fines, two years' imprisonment, or both if convicted. MCMC also reminded the public to avoid sharing or spreading content that touches on sensitive issues related to religion, race, or royal institutions (3Rs). The commission emphasized that such material could divide society and disrupt national harmony. 'MCMC remains committed to ensuring the country's cyberspace remains safe, secure, and respected, in line with efforts to strengthen national unity and harmony among Malaysia's multiracial society,' the statement added. Earlier reports highlighted the historic promotion of Datuk Johnny Lim Eng Seng as the first Chinese senior officer to attain the rank of Lieutenant General in the MAF.
