Supreme Court dismisses Maran's plea seeking ₹1,323 crore damages from SpiceJet
A bench of Justices P. S. Narasimha and Atul S. Chandurkar refused to interfere with the high court's decision.
Maran and KAL Airways had challenged the Delhi High Court's 23 May order that had dismissed their appeals due to delays. The division bench of Justices C. Hari Shankar and Ajay Digpaul had refused to condone a 55-day delay in filing and a 226-day delay in re-filing their appeals, calling their conduct a 'calculated gamble' and accusing them of deliberately concealing information from the court and SpiceJet.
Condonation of delay refers to seeking the court's permission to file a case or appeal after the legal deadline has lapsed. Under the Limitation Act, parties typically have 90 days to file an appeal from a single judge's decision to a division bench. If they miss this deadline, they must explain the delay to seek condonation, which the Delhi High Court did not accept in this case.
In 2015, Maran and KAL Airways transferred their entire stake in SpiceJet to Ajay Singh for a nominal ₹ 2 amid a financial crisis that had nearly shut the airline. As part of the deal, Singh, who became SpiceJet's chairman and managing director, took over liabilities worth ₹ 1,500 crore.
Maran and KAL Airways had also paid ₹ 679 crore to SpiceJet for issuing convertible warrants and preference shares. However, these were never issued under Singh's management, prompting Maran to approach the Delhi High Court in 2017 seeking a refund.
In July 2018, an arbitration panel of three retired Supreme Court judges rejected Maran's claim for ₹ 1,323 crore in damages but ordered a refund of ₹ 579 crore plus interest. Both sides challenged parts of this award under the Arbitration Act in the Delhi High Court.
In 2023, Justice Chandra Dhari Singh upheld the arbitral award, directing SpiceJet and Singh to refund ₹ 308 crore for warrants and ₹ 270 crore for preference shares, along with applicable interest.
SpiceJet challenged this ruling before a division bench. In May 2024, the division bench granted relief to SpiceJet by remanding the case to the single judge for fresh consideration, putting the ₹ 270 crore refund on hold.
Maran and KAL Airways approached the Supreme Court against this remand decision, but their plea was dismissed in July 2024. They then refiled their long-pending appeals against the single judge's 2023 order, leading to the high court division bench's May 2025 dismissal due to delays.
In a stock exchange filing on 26 May, SpiceJet welcomed the high court's decision.
'These claims were thoroughly examined and rejected by a panel of three retired Supreme Court judges. KAL Airways and Kalanithi Maran then appealed to the single judge bench of the Delhi High Court seeking the same amount in damages, which was also rejected by the court,' the airline said.

Governor approves ₹5,000 crore KKRDB action plan for 2025–26
Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot has approved the ₹5,000-crore action plan for the year 2025–26 prepared by the Kalyana Karnataka Region Development Board (KKRDB), giving a major boost to development initiatives across the region. Jewargi MLA and KKRDB chairperson Ajay Singh, who released a press note on Thursday, said the approval came in the third week of July after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah submitted the plan for the Governor's assent. 'The early clearance this year will allow the board to begin implementation well on time and take up more development works with added momentum,' he said. The current year's action plan was finalised during the KKRDB board meeting on May 10, 2025, in the presence of elected representatives, including MLAs, MPs, and Ministers. Mr. Singh said the action plan was prepared based on recommendations of the Nanjundappa Committee and in line with the Comprehensive Development Report (CDR) index. The allocation has been planned proportionately to the population and categorised under micro, macro, discretionary grants, and administrative expenses, he added. 'In previous years, there had been delays in approval. For instance, the 2023–24 plan was cleared in December, even though the board met in August and submitted the plan soon after. Despite the delay, the board implemented projects worth ₹2,009 crore across key sectors like education, health and infrastructure by the end of March,' Dr. Singh noted. He said this year's action plan was prepared within the fiscal limits set by the State Budget and duly cleared by the Finance Department. 'We had received permission from the Finance Department to prepare a ₹5,000 crore plan, and it has now been approved by the Governor without delay,' he added. The board had submitted the draft to Raj Bhavan promptly after the Chief Minister's approval, and Dr. Singh personally met the Governor to thank him for the swift response. 'The Governor's timely approval in July itself has given Kalyana Karnataka a new impetus for development. It allows us to begin implementation at the earliest and ensure speedy progress in backward areas,' Dr. Singh said.

Petronet Q1 net profit falls 25%; to invest ₹6,355 cr in new LNG terminal
Petronet LNG Ltd, India's largest gas importer, on Friday reported a 25 per cent drop in its June quarter net profit, and said it will invest ₹6,355 crore in setting up a new import facility at Odisha. Net profit of ₹850.58 crore in April-June was lower than ₹1,141.58 crore last year, mainly because of lower volumes imported due to a fall in power demand on early arrival of monsoon. The firm's Dahej liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal in Gujarat imported 207 trillion BTUs (British thermal unit) as compared to 248 TBtus in April-June 2024, its chief executive, A K Singh, told reporters on an earnings call. Overall, the company processed 220 TBTUs in April-June - the first quarter of the current 2025-26 fiscal - as opposed to 262 TBTUs last year. "LNG throughput in Q1 is lower than corresponding quarter mainly because there was a severe power requirement (in April-June 2024) which necessitated substantial LNG imports," he said, adding this year early and severe monsoon rains lower demand for electricity, and hence reduced demand for LNG (which is used to generate power). There were also shutdowns of fertiliser plants in the quarter, he said. He said the Dahej terminal operated at 92 per cent capacity in Q1 as compared to best ever utilisation of 110 per cent in the same period last year. On the demand outlook, he said city gas volumes have picked up and so is the demand by the petrochemical sector. In the second quarter (July-September), the Dahej is back to near 100 per cent capacity operation, he said. Singh said the company board has also accorded in-principle additional investment approval for setting up of a 5 million tonnes a year land-based LNG terminal at Gopalpur. This is in place of earlier approval of 4 million-tonne Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) based LNG terminal for an incremental project cost of ₹4,048.80 crore. The overall approved value of the project is ₹6,354.80 crore (including taxes and duties), he said, adding it would take three years to construct the facility. Besides Dahej, Petronet also has a 5 million tonnes a year import terminal at Kochi in Kerala, but it operates at less than a quarter of its capacity because of a lack of pipelines to take imported fuel to customers. While the capital expenditure has increased - from ₹2,300 crore for a floated import unit (called FSRU) to ₹6,354.80 crore land-based fixed terminal, the operating expenses (opex) have substantially reduced to ₹450-500 crore, he said. The decision to shift to a land-based terminal was also taken because of the tight market for FSRUs in view of European countries using them to import gas in place of the volumes they used to receive from Russia.
