Iconic Levi's TV ad star Nick Kamen battled secret illness before shock death
He's best remembered as Madonna 's protégé and the heartthrob of an iconic Levi's advert where he famously stripped down to his boxers in a launderette. But model and singer Nick Kamen tragically never reclaimed the limelight following his Eighties glory days, passing away aged 59 on 4 May, 2021.
The infamous 1985 Levi's ad sees Nick walk into a launderette, to the sound of Marvin Gaye's 1968 classic, I Heard It Through The Grapevine. He then removes his T-shirt, and unbuttons his Levi's 501s, while several women watch on – throwing both in the washing machine. He then takes a seat wearing just his white boxer shorts, with a statement appearing on screen: 'Now available in stonewashed'.
The star, who scored a 1986 hit with Each Time You Break My Heart – penned by Madonna herself – died at his Notting Hill, London, home following a gruelling three-year fight against bone cancer. Nick, born Ivor Neville Kamen, was cared for by his devoted partner of 15 years, Lucinda Carey, during his final days, reports OK!. His brother Ronald disclosed that as Nick's condition deteriorated, his breathing became "very shallow" and he sensed his time was running out. "He did fight it very hard," he revealed.
In an interview following Nick's passing, Lucinda revealed that despite his ordeal, Nick experienced a "beautiful" death. She explained: "It was beautiful and incredibly gentle."
Lucinda, daughter of the Viscount of Falkland, confirmed that she and her 23 year old daughter were present during Nick's final moments. "Nick was an incredible person, and it was really inspiring to be around him during his illness," she continued.
Speaking to Mail Online, the filmmaker went on: "There has been a lot of joy and hardship over the past three years and he could not have lived with more respect and dignity."
Lucinda disclosed that Nick, who had known for three years that his death was approaching, "adored" the medical team who looked after him at Hammersmith Hospital, west London. "He valued everything that the NHS did for him and so do the rest of us," she revealed.
Speaking about his diagnosis, Lucinda confided: "He's known for the past three years that he was going to die but he never felt sorry for himself and lived his life with incredible charm and courage."
She detailed that Nick was "accepting of his situation" and remarkably, throughout his struggle, he never allowed stress to overwhelm him. Looking back on the height of Nick's stardom, Lucinda admitted that he "never enjoyed" the public attention that accompanied it and felt at his "most miserable" during his celebrity period.
"That's why Nick stepped out of public life because he didn't like being famous," she said. "He was happy living a private life and didn't like being the centre of attention".
Nick had gained the nickname "Lazarus" from his family due to his countless comebacks against all expectations. His sister, Denise, remembered: "He never gave up and put up such a good fight, he would always fight back and would not give up. He came back so often we would call him Lazarus after the biblical character, he really did fight so hard."
Madonna, who was a dear friend, voiced her grief saying it was "heartbreaking" to lose Nick. She recalled him as a "kind, sweet human" who "suffered too much".
The Levi's ad was recreated by Beyoncé last year, who said: 'My song Levii's Jeans celebrates what I believe is the ultimate Americana uniform – something we all wear with pride. I am honoured to work with Levi's to create quintessential American iconography."

Megan revealed that after her win, Simon Cowell's label, which was supposed to support her next steps, closed down. 'The label shut down after I won, so it was pretty hard. "He actually rang me, which was crazy, because it's not every day Simon Cowell rings you, to say that the label was closing down. Chart-topping star 'felt like world was ending' over devastating break-up
Popstar Olivia Rodrigo's stock in trade is her unique take on singing about teenage heartache - and she has opened up about the crippling pain of it, while making her debut record Sour Sweeping to superstardom at such breakneck speed certainly brought its challenges for Olivia Rodrigo, and recalling her meteoric rise in 2021, she has said, 'It was, obviously, just absurd and crazy. I'd been writing songs and working my whole life, but it did seem sort of instantaneous.' Speaking of the psychological impact of the sudden pressure she came under, she added, as OK! reports, 'It can be really tough on your mental health. I'm grateful for the people who like me for me, and keep me separated from all the noise.' 'I couldn't play a show. I couldn't go meet people who were listening to the song. So it was very insular in a way that I think was actually really beneficial for my mental health,' she said. Having first started therapy at the age of 16, Olivia opened up about her battles in her 2022 Disney+ film Driving Home 2 U. Describing the pain of a breakup while making her debut record Sour, she said, 'It felt like my world was ending every single day.' On another occasion, she suggested that older people 'trivialise' what teenagers go through, and added, 'It feels so real when you're in it, and it's so valid. Just because it's not an adult problem or you don't have to pay taxes yet or whatever, doesn't mean it doesn't hurt.' Despite riding high in the charts, she told of periods of crippling self-doubt when she 'started thinking everything I did was really bad'. That came to the fore while writing second album Guts, and in an interview with music writer Laura Snapes in 2023, she admitted, 'There were a good few months where I would sit at the piano and all I would think about was how I was never going to make something as good, or all the mean things that people on Twitter would say.' Recalling the day that conversation took place, Laura tells us today, 'One thing I found sad when I interviewed her were her comments over insecurities about the way she looks. To me, it was proof of how dangerous social media can be, if a very young and very beautiful woman can feel that way.' But as she points out, Olivia's honesty carries some advantages. 'One of the really positive things about this new generation of popstars is the way they talk about the toll of fame and all the expectations on them as women,' she says. 'People like Olivia, Billie Eilish and Chappell Roan are telling fans, 'If you want to understand us, you have to know what we're going through and what the personal cost is for us.' Thankfully, Olivia seems very wise and knows how to look after herself.' When touring leaves her 'burned out and exhausted', she activates a plan to counter it, saying, 'I do all the classic things. Call my therapist, go to the gym, I eat really healthy, and I don't drink.' Journalling is a key part of her routine, too. 'I could journal forever,' she has said. 'Putting down all the random stuff that comes into my head. Or if I'm feeling anxious, I'll make a list of all the things I'm grateful for.' During downtime, she finds sanctuary in seeing her oldest pals, too. 'I really love hanging out with my friends. I feel like that's really rejuvenating for me. And I love talking about stuff that is not music or industry-related.' Maintaining her own space is mentally beneficial as well, and she has said, 'I love spending time by myself. That's the best thing ever.' Speaking on the YouTube series Actually Me in 2021, she said it was 'very exciting' to move out of her parents' house and into her first 'big girl apartment', but later added, 'It's like a soft move out – my parents are there a lot of the time.' One of the most difficult times for Olivia came in 2021 when she faced accusations of plagiarism in songs from Sour. When critics drew attention to a likeness between her hit Good 4 U and Paramore's 2007 anthem Misery Business, band members Hayley Williams and Josh Farro were later credited as co-writers on her song. But it proved controversial, as many disputed the claim, saying they were two different songs with just fleeting similarities. It opened a debate about the blurred lines of musical influence, and as BBC music correspondent Mark Savage tells us, 'When you're starting out as a songwriter, of course you try and imitate your heroes. Sometimes those imitations are more overt than others, and sometimes you might combine six or seven different influences. I think that's something Olivia does well across her music, and for me, as long as you're putting your own spin on a song, it's original.' Admitting she was 'a little caught off-guard' by what happened, Olivia was clearly hurt by the fallout. 'I think it's disappointing to see people take things out of context and discredit any young woman's work,' she said. Stressing that she composed the lyrics and melody for Good 4 U in the shower, she added, 'What's so beautiful about music is that it can be so inspired by music that's come out in the past… It's sort of a fun, beautiful sharing process. Nothing in music is ever new.' Unfortunately, the same issue reared its head with her song Deja Vu, and Olivia also gave retrospective songwriting credits to Taylor Swift, Jack Antonoff and St. Vincent for its resemblances to Taylor's 2019 track Cruel Summer. Olivia later said it was 'very confusing,' and that she had been 'green and bright-eyed and bushy-tailed' at that stage in her career, but the saga led to a reported rift with Taylo r – who Olivia grew up idolising. She had once even said, 'I truly would not be the songwriter I am today had I not grown up being so inspired by everything that she does.' But many months later, when Olivia confessed to not attending any shows from Taylor's Eras Tour, rumours swirled that the lyrics to Vampire – which included the words 'bloodsucker, fame f*cker' – may have been aimed at her pop rival. When asked directly about it, Olivia replied, 'How do I answer this? I mean, I never want to say who any of my songs are about. I've never done that before in my career and probably won't.' She also told how she was 'very surprised' when people assumed she was dissing Taylo r, insisting, 'I don't have beef with anyone.' Even today, it's unclear if the pair have reconciled. 'Nobody really knows what went on there,' says Laura. 'But whatever you think about the situation with the writing credits, I doubt it's a mistake that Olivia will ever make again. I don't think it was done intentionally – she was just so young, with so many formative influences, and they just came out in ways she didn't realise until it was pointed out to her.'

Martine McCutcheon's mum Jenny Tomlin has revealed that following the death of her son she fell into a depression which led to her pushing Martine out of her life but now wants to reconciliate Following the tragic death of Martine McCutcheon's younger brother Laurence John in 2022, the actress and singer was left devastated. But it wasn't just the death of her beloved brother that broke her heart, the relationship between her and her mother Jenny Tomlin also started to crumble, leaving the pair estranged. At the time of Laurence's death, who was only 31 at the time, Martine, 49, famous for her role in EastEnders and the iconic film Love Actually, Martine revealed that her heart is "forever broken." In an interview with OK! Magazine, Jenny explains that it was her fault their relationship fell apart. She admits that she suffered an emotional breakdown and ended up pushing Martine further and further away. But she is now desperate to reconcile. Recalling their close bond, Jenny told the publication: "We did all the wonderful stuff – the premiere of Love Actually, the restaurants – but the memories I cherish are of us just sitting on my bed, bringing up old memories and laughing. I miss that." Explaining her mindset at the time, Jenny continued: "When I lost LJ, I detached. I was so heartbroken I couldn't talk to Martine." She added: "There was no big row – Martine tried to contact me for months, but I didn't answer. Martine was grieving and needed me, too. I want the chance to say sorry. I miss her so much – it physically hurts." Last year, Martine reached out to Jenny but their reunion was anything but the one she had hoped for as little was discussed in order for them to move forward. Martine had asked if Jenny's husband could do "some painting" in her new home. She explained that she literally jumped at the opportunity to visit her daughter in a bid to mend their fractured relationship - but instead their union felt "awkward" and "the atmosphere felt heavy." Jenny has now gone as far as to liken her split with Martine with Victoria Beckham, who is reportedly going through the same thing with her eldest son Brooklyn Beckham. Laurence, who was known to family and friends as LJ, did not drink alcohol or smoke, but had suffered with acute ischaemic heart disease and diabetes. Realising the error of her ways at the time, Jenny candidly admits that she had "abandoned" Martine as she was "so wrapped up in my own grief that I was neglecting my other child." Jenny explains that the reason for her interview is to hopefully show Martine that she is ready to put the past behind her. She explained that she has called, text and sent cards to the mum of one but has had no response. She had even driven to her house and shouted her name out. But again was faced with silence. Jenny hopes that one day she could have a cup of tea with her daughter while her grandson plays in her garden.
