I revived my dog's puppy days using Google Gemini AI – Here's how it went

My pet dog, Coco, is starting to get quite old now; he's almost 10. We got him in 2015, and at that time, while phones had decent cameras, I did not take many videos, primarily because they were not very good. This is why I have barely any videos of my dog when he was a tiny pug puppy, which is a big regret of mine. Now, when Google Gemini started to roll out the feature that allows you to convert photos into videos using, of course, Veo 3 AI, I immediately jumped at the opportunity and tried it out. To my surprise, it did a fairly accurate job. Here is how it went. Firstly, I opened the Gemini app on my iPhone (it also works on Android phones), and because I have access to the Google AI Pro plan, I have access to Google Veo 3 preview, which is the AI tool Google uses to make videos. Then, I submitted a photo of my pet dog, Coco, when he was a puppy, being held by my brother. And next, a prompt along with it that said, 'Make a video of my pug puppy from this photo and try to keep the details intact.' The AI-generated video Google Veo 3 made. (Converted to GIF) Gemini took around a minute or so before generating an eight-second-long video of my little Coco moving around in my brother's arms. It looks quite realistic, and I am beyond happy that I got something. While it is definitely not real, it is indeed satisfying to see a moving picture of my dog from his puppy days. Honestly, I'm not sure how I feel at large because this video isn't real. It's something that never actually happened. But maybe that's the point. It offers a glimpse of what could have been and perhaps, that in itself is comforting. This is possible with the Veo 3 preview only. It gives you 8-second videos. Veo 3 only launched in May, and Google is now shipping the preview for users. This capability is only for Gemini AI Pro and Gemini Ultra subscribers, which means you will have to pay roughly ₹ 2,000 to access Google Gemini (there's a free trial available). Google says people have been creating a wide range of content using Veo 3, including everything from ASMR videos to cutting through lava. Having said that, I also tried it with photos of myself when I was a kid, but it did not allow me. Google is also bundling in safety measures, including adding a visible watermark to show they are AI-generated and an invisible SynthID digital watermark. And, you can definitely use the Google Veo 3 preview to generate a wide range of content from making talking monkey vlogs set on the streets of Delhi to flying, talking giraffes climbing Mount Everest. The world is your oyster, though, of course, within the limits of Google's guardrails.

Meta acquires voice cloning startup Play AI to strengthen speech capabilities

nMeta has acquired California-based voice AI startup Play AI, in a move aimed at bolstering its capabilities in generative voice technology, according to a new report by Bloomberg. The deal sees the entire Play AI team joining Meta next week, where they will begin working under Johan Schalkwyk, a former senior speech AI leader at Google and a recent Meta recruit. Play AI is best known for its advanced voice cloning tool, which allows users to replicate their own voices or generate new human-like voices. These can be deployed across digital platforms, including websites, mobile apps, and phones, a functionality that aligns closely with Meta's growing ambitions in AI-driven interaction. According to an internal memo viewed by Bloomberg, Meta sees Play AI's technology as a "great match" for its existing AI initiatives, including Meta AI, AI Characters, and its wearables division. The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. This acquisition is the latest in Meta's aggressive recruitment and expansion efforts within the AI sector. The company recently launched a Superintelligence Lab, with a mission to build artificial intelligence systems smarter than humans. In June, Meta secured a $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI, a startup known for AI data labelling, and brought on Alexandr Wang, its CEO, to lead the new lab. Meta has been heavily investing in acquiring talent from rival companies. It has reportedly offered bonuses of up to $100 million to AI experts from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Apple. The company has already hired multiple engineers who worked on OpenAI's ChatGPT and GPT-4, as well as talent from the Google Gemini team. Notably, Apple's top AI executive working on advanced features also left for Meta earlier this year. With the integration of Play AI's voice technology, Meta appears to be doubling down on AI-generated voice as a core interface, both for future social experiences and its hardware roadmap, including possible use cases in AR/VR and smart glasses. As the AI arms race intensifies, Meta's latest move signals a strategic emphasis on speech and voice interfaces as the next frontier of human-computer interaction.

Gemini AI app now gets access to third-party app data on Android- How to disable?

Google has reportedly rolled out a new update that lets the Gemini AI app on Android devices access data from third-party apps installed on the phone. This may come as a major privacy concern to Android users. However, users can disable the Gemini AI activity from accessing data from other apps on the devices. This update has been rolled out from July 7 as per the ZDNET report, and many users may also have received an email regarding the major change. Therefore, if you want to maintain privacy, here's how you can disable Gemini AI from accessing data from other apps on Android phones. Android users can easily disable Gemini Apps Activity and the app's Gemini extension; however, it should be noted that the app will store activity for 72 hours. However, if the activity is not disabled, the app will store the activity for about 18 months. Follow the steps below to disable Gemini Apps Activity: Step 1: Go to the Gemini app on your Android phone. Step 2: Now, click on your profile icon in the top-right corner, and select Gemini Apps Activity from the drop-down menu. Step 3: Just alongside Gemini Apps Activity, you'll find a drop-down menu from which you can turn off the feature. Step 4: Now, head back to the profile's menu and click on 'Apps'. Step 5: Within the Apps tab, you'll see several third-party apps and a toggle switch. Make sure the toggle is disabled to make sure Gemini do not access data from the listed apps. Doing so will enable users to maintain privacy, and an AI tool to access personal data from other apps installed on their Android device. As far as iOS users are concerned, we checked the Gemini app, and users can follow similar steps to disable the Gemini App's Activity. However, for third-party app support, we did not find any third-party app list on the 'Apps' tab of the Gemini AI app. Additionally, users also have options to disable Gemini and switch to using Google Assistant on Android.
