Repok rep proposes TVET institution in Sarikei to boost skilled workforce
KUCHING (May 22): Repok assemblyman Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii has proposed the development of a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institution on government land in Sungai Merudu, Sarikei.
He said the initiative is crucial to producing a highly skilled workforce to support Sarawak's industrial growth, particularly in the central zone.
Huang, who is also federal Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Sustainability, stressed the importance of creating alternative education pathways for youths and aligning them with current skills training needs.
'This area has great potential for the development of a fully equipped TVET institution or polytechnic,' he said, referring to the government land located at Lot 365, Block 59 in Sarikei Land District.
'I hope the proposal will receive the ministry's support to deliver long-term benefits for our younger generation,' said Huang in his Motion of Appreciation on the Speech by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.
He also highlighted several pressing issues affecting his constituents, beginning with the growing demand for affordable housing in Sarikei.
'The need for affordable homes is increasingly urgent. We must ensure no group is left behind in accessing comfortable and reasonably priced home,' he said.
He further raised concerns about insufficient street lighting in areas such as at Jalan Hua Ee and Sungai Pasi and called for improved lighting infrastructure to enhance public safety.
On economic development, Huang proposed the establishment of a Mini Industrial Park in Sarikei to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and generate job opportunities for youths and residents.
To meet the needs of the growing population, Huang called for the construction of a larger convention centre, noting that the current community hall can only accommodate about 1,000 people.
'This limits our ability to organise large-scale programmes that benefit the wider community,' he said.
He also urged the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) to expedite the SMART Rural Telecommunication Tower initiative to improve internet access in rural and remote areas.
Lastly, he appealed for the provision of treated water to remote communities in Ulu Sungai Rusa, including eight longhouses and a church in Sungai Mawang and Sungai Kuap areas.
'Treated water supply is a basic right that should be available to all citizens regardless of their location,' he said.

Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka vice-chancellor Massila Kamalrudin said the full scholarships offered would not only cover training fees, but also the cost of living, which would allow the B40 and M40 to further their studies without placing too much financial burden on these groups. 'A mobile TVET programme and a satellite training centre will allow for TVET to be introduced to more rural areas and the Orang Asli community, who did not have proper access to TVET institutions in the past. 'Such an approach means that no one is left behind in the country's development,' she said in a statement. Tabling the 13MP yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that the government will introduce a Madani TVET financing scheme and a TVET training fund. Massila said the training fund would help equip students with the skills to match the demands of the market in sectors such as renewable energy, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence. She said youths are gravitating more towards TVET as it provided a clearer career path. 'TVET graduates don't just obtain certificates, but are guaranteed jobs due to tie-ups with the industry,' she said. Separately, the University of Cyberjaya described the 13MP as a 'roadmap for reshaping the human capital landscape of Malaysia'. Its vice-chancellor, David Whitford, hailed the five-year plan's emphasis on AI literacy, digital skills, and entrepreneurship. 'We also support the MP13's proposed pilot autonomy for universities, recognising this as a critical step toward greater innovation, agility, and accountability in higher education,' he said.

About 30 DAP MPs visit Umno HQ for TVET briefing by Zahid
KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly 30 DAP members of parliament made a historic visit to the Umno headquarters at Menara Dato Onn earlier this week, signalling growing maturity and cooperation within the unity government. The MPs were attending a briefing on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), hosted by Deputy Prime Minister and Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who also chairs the national TVET Council. Kota Kinabalu MP Chan Foong Hin, in his Facebook post, described the occasion as a first for both parties, marking a significant milestone in post-GE15 political collaboration. "It marked the first time that such a large group of DAP MPs visited Umno's headquarters, a sign of maturity and cooperation within the unity government," Chan said. "The Madani government is not perfect. But we are serious in discharging our responsibilities. We are working to overcome ideological and party differences for the sake of national progress. Nation-building requires unity, not uniformity, and that's the spirit we're committed to," he said. 1.2 million jobs via TVET, digital econ

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when tabling the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) with the theme 'Redesigning' at the Dewan Rakyat, said that the TVET programme would also be expanded to tahfiz students to produce Madani huffaz technocrats with added value in technical expertise. The government, he said, will also expand the TVET curriculum to include the field of ageing with special incentives for students undergoing industrial training. 'TVET programmes are gaining popularity. In 2024 alone, 212,000 new admissions into TVET programmes were recorded,' he said, adding that the Madani TVET programme will be strengthened to increase the mastery of skills that can generate higher income, including for tahfiz and huffaz students. 'At the same time, the level of TVET certification will be increased by introducing three new levels of expertise, six to eight, to be equivalent to the level of higher education qualifications under the Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF). This effort aims to recognise high skills in technical fields and expand career paths, in line with market needs,' said the prime minister. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said TVET graduates are also enjoying increasingly competitive incomes, most of which exceeded the minimum wage of RM1,700. 'About 95.6 per cent of TVET graduates are able to secure employment within six months of completing their training,' he said. He said the close collaboration between TVET institutions and industry would serve as a catalyst for technological transfer and skills enhancement in line with initiatives by the Ministry of Higher Education. 'The structure of TVET programme offerings will be re-strategised with a focus on high-growth, high-value (HGHV) and advanced technology-based industries. 'This is in line with labour market demands and strategic industry needs such as in the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), the Kerian Integrated Green Industrial Park (KIGIP) project and the Kulim Hi-Tech Park (KHTP),' he said.
