7 Home Affairs officials arrested for contravention of Immigration and Identification Acts
Seven Department of Home Affairs (DHA) employees have been arrested in connection with issuing fraudulent passports to undocumented foreigners.
This forms part of an ongoing operation run by the Serious Corruption Investigation component of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) in Pretoria.

The operation emanates from a complaint by the DHA relating to the issuance of fraudulent passports.
Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale explained that allegations included corruption, fraud and contravention of the Identification Act and Immigration Act.
The crimes reportedly took place between February 2020 and July 2023, with the facilitation of fraudulent passports from DHA offices in Durban, specifically the Commercial Street branch.
'These unlawful activities took place outside regular business hours, including evenings, weekends and on public holidays when the DHA offices were officially closed,' said Mogale.
'Preliminary investigations by the DHA confirmed that local citizens [were] offered R300 to R1 000 in exchange for their co-operation, especially at DHA offices in Isipingo, Durban Central and eShowe, resulting in a case being opened for investigation.'
To date, 38 people have been arrested between September 2022 and now, seven of whom are DHA officials and 31 private citizens, explained Mogale.
He said 24 individuals – four of them DHA officials – were convicted and sentenced to a combined 310 years' imprisonment.
'The remaining five suspects were arrested by the Serious Corruption Investigation on Saturday in various parts of Durban and will face charges of corruption, fraud, contravention of the Immigration Act and contravention of the Identification Act,' he said.

Bail granted to SANDF twelve embroiled in murderous scandal

On 11 July 2025, the Randburg Magistrate's Court granted R10 000 bail each to twelve South African National Defence Force officials. They are embroiled in a murderous scandal. Lieutenant Colonel Frans Mathipa was gunned down on 6 August 2023. According to law enforcement, the shooting was an alleged plot by the 12 SANDF members. At the time of the incident, Mathipa was driving on the N1 highway near Hammanskraal. According to Hawks spokesperson, Katlego Mogale, the shooting caused Mathipa to lose control of his vehicle. He veered into a ditch and it resulted in his subsequent death. An investigation into Mathipa's death led the Hawks to Sunnybooi Pinny Wambi, Edward Albert van Deventer, David Mogaditswe, Kgosietsile Letsatsi, Samkelo Ngwenya and Jonathan Nteleza. Mogale said Paulos Matlou, Herbert Mashego, Solomon Lechoenyo, Jacob Mokoena, Richard Mpoetsi and Olyn Lenardus were also implicated. Lieutenant Colonel Mathipa was on duty when he was killed. He was a member of the Gauteng Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit of the Hawks. He was tasked with investigating crimes against the state. 'The accused are also allegedly linked to a case of kidnapping of two male foreign nationals at a mall in Midrand on 29 December 202,' Mogale continued. While the twelve celebrate temporary relief, Mogale has warned that it will be only for a week as they are due back in court next Thursday. Following the granting of bail, the Magistrate postponed the case to 17 July 2025, for the state to appeal the bail judgement.

POLOKWANE – A luxury black Porsche Cayenne, reported stolen, was found dismantled at a workshop in Nirvana, Polokwane, during an intelligence-led operation on Wednesday (July 9). The Limpopo police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba said the operation was carried out by the Limpopo Tracking Team, in partnership with Tracker Connect, Tshimollo Security and Investigation, and Limpopo Tracking Security, after receiving information about suspicious activities at a workshop on Nelson Mandela Drive. Upon arrival, officers discovered the stripped Porsche in the workshop's backyard. 'Preliminary investigations confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen in May 2025 in the Zebediela policing area. A further search led to the recovery of a second stolen vehicle, a white Toyota Tazz, reported stolen in October 2024 in the Seshego policing area,' his statement read. Four suspects, aged between 35 and 49, were arrested at the scene. Ledwaba said among the suspects was a 49-year-old foreign national, who was also found to be in the country illegally. 'A charge of contravening the Immigration Act will be added to his docket. A case of possession of suspected stolen motor vehicles has been opened at the Westernburg SAPS and the suspects are expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court today (July 11),' he said. The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised the coordinated efforts that led to the breakthrough. 'The dismantling of high-end vehicles like this Porsche points to a well-organised criminal syndicate. We remain committed to dismantling these networks and ensuring justice is served,' she said.
