Chandigarh, May 24 (PTI) Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar Saturday said that with the introduction of three new criminal laws, India is entering a new era of justice where scientific evidence and forensic expertise are pivotal to ensuring transparency, speed, and accuracy in investigations.
'Under the recently approved National Forensic Infrastructure Scheme (NAFIS), an amount of Rs 2,254.40 crore will be invested to build and upgrade forensic facilities, train personnel, enhance research, and develop indigenous technology to make India self-reliant in forensic science.
'We aim to ensure mandatory forensic investigation in all crimes involving punishment of more than seven years, and align the criminal justice system with technology-driven evidence collection and analysis,' he said.
The two-day national meet concluded at the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) here.
The national meet focused on aligning forensic services with the country's newly enacted criminal laws to build a justice system that is fast, transparent, and rooted in scientific evidence, said an official statement.
Organised under the theme 'Strengthening Forensic Science Services as per the New Criminal Laws', the event brought together the CFSL and state FSL directors, senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and experts from law enforcement and academia.
The event was attended by the directors of CFSLs and state FSLs from across the country, as well as key officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and law enforcement agencies.
The meet aimed to strengthen the forensic ecosystem to support the implementation of the new criminal laws – the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.
The minister said the four pillars of this transformation will be infrastructure development, skilled human resources, technological upgradation (AI, machine learning, national data networks) and standardisation through SOPs and integration with systems like ICGS and CCTNS.
In his inaugural address, Dr SK Jain, director and chief forensic scientist, the Directorate of Forensic Science Services (DFSS), Ministry of Home Affairs, emphasised the transformative role of forensic science in the context of the new criminal codes.
Director, CFSL Chandigarh, Dr Sukhminder Kaur, emphasised the importance of collaboration and innovation, noting that forensic science is the backbone of modern criminal investigation.

I will seek transfer," he said. The police officer said an inquiry has been launched and action will be taken against the accused once the charges are proved prima facie. Ghosh reportedly some locals that he had hit the educator in a fit of rage during an argument but should not have acted in such a manner. The accused is absconding. His panchayat member brother said he will not try to shield Ghosh if the charges are found to be true.

ED arrests Bobby Patel, gets 4-day remand in money laundering, human trafficking case
The Ahmedabad Zonal Office of Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested human trafficker Bharatkumar Rambhai Patel alias Bobby Patel, said a statement on Thursday. Bobby Patel, who has cases against him in Gujarat, West Bengal and Delhi for illegally sending Indian nationals abroad, was arrested by the ED under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Patel was produced before the Special Judge (PMLA), Mirzapura Court, Ahmedabad, which remanded him to ED custody for four days custody, the agency said in the statement. The ED said that it had initiated its investigation against Patel and others based on an FIR registered for illegally sending Indian citizens abroad since 2015 by Sola High Court Police Station in Ahmedabad City. The ED said that its probe allegedly revealed that Patel has been involved in sending 'desirous Indian nationals abroad illegally for exorbitant consideration on the basis of bogus or fabricated documents for getting visas of different countries with duplicate or bogus passports used as genuine by impersonating the passengers wrongly'. For this purpose, Patel and others, 'used to collect Rs 60 to Rs 75 lakh for one passenger, Rs 1 to 1.25 crore for a couple (husband and wife) and Rs 1.25 to 1.75 crore if children were also accompanying the passengers abroad'. In India, the ED said, multiple FIRs have been registered against Patel in Gujarat, Delhi and West Bengal. The 'Proceeds of Crime (POC) generated in this case are valued at Rs 7 crore (approx)', said the ED. Further investigation into the matter is under progress.

Kolkata: Indicating a growing frustration with Bengali-speaking migrant workers being illegally detained in Odisha as Bangladeshis, Bengal chief secretary Manoj Pant on Thursday wrote to his Odisha counterpart, Manoj Ahuja, to put an end to this "continuing harassment faced by people from West Bengal" in the neighbouring state. What is even more concerning is that even when these persons produce valid identity documents — including Aadhaar cards, ration cards, voter IDs, electricity bills and PDS documents — their claims are being dismissed. In many instances, they are being asked to produce ancestral land records dating back several generations, an unreasonable and unjustifiable demand for migrant workers." Pant also mentioned how, "alarmingly, there have also been instances where, despite verification reports from competent authorities in West Bengal confirming the identity and citizenship of the individuals, there has been no positive action or relief". "I appeal to you to take a humanitarian view of the matter and ensure that these individuals, who are Indian citizens, are not subjected to arbitrary detention or harassment based on linguistic or regional identity," he wrote. "It is deeply distressing to learn that many of them are being targeted solely because they speak Bengali — their mother tongue — and are being unjustly labelled as Bangladeshi infiltrators. This sweeping generalisation is not only unfair and discriminatory, but also deeply hurtful to citizens who have every right to dignity and protection under the law," Pant added.
