May 8 South Africa (Turffontein) form analysis
Race 1 (1,450m)
(4) GULF OF AMERICA and (7) JAPANESE GARDEN stayed on well in a winners' race on debut over 1,160m and both would have benefited from that experience.
(2) BOLD ACTION and (9) OPERA FAN have the form and experience to play leading roles, too.
Watch the betting on well-bred newcomer (3) FAIR PROPOSAL.
Race 2 (1,450m)
(1) CHRONICLE KING ran second on debut over track and trip behind a subsequent winner. Can go one better with that experience to count on.
(8) SCARLETT HEART can be competitive, especially in receipt of a sex allowance.
Recently gelded (6) ROYALE JACKET is best judged on his debut performance.
Watch the betting on imported youngster (7) TASKMASTER.
Race 3 (1,200m)
(7) EIGHT HATS will be hard to beat if she takes her place in this.
(2) GENOVEFA and (6) RENDEVOUS IN RIO have shown enough to trouble the selection, although well-bred newcomer (10) RACHEL WALL need not be special to also make her presence felt.
Race 4 (1,600m)
(1) ART NOUVEAU and (3) SHAMOON have the form and experience to play leading roles but are vulnerable to less-exposed rivals.
(2) NKWENKWEZI would not be winning out of turn and need not improve much in first-time blinkers to open her account.
(9) ETHICAL ran an improved third against males last time and remains open to further progress.
(8) REFLECTIVE did not go unnoticed on debut. Has a say.
Race 5 (2,000m)
(8) KUDZU scored in his only 2,000m appearance and is good value to preserve that 100 per cent record over this distance.
(10) TOTAL SURRENDER is weighted to be competitive, especially in first-time blinkers.
(5) STAR COIN has a good record over this trip. Keep safe.
(9) CLAW, (12) FETCHING FLYER and (13) JORDAN have each-way chances.
Race 6 (1,450m)
(4) SAIL THE SKY was rewarded for consistency with a last-start success at a higher level.
However, it is worth noting that Gavin Lerena gets off that runner to ride (5) CALL ME MASTER.
(1) AFTER HOURS and (2) CALIDA have the form and experience at this level to do well.
Race 7 (1,450m)
(2) NIGHT BOMBER finished behind (6) BOB'S YOUR UNCLE before beating (9) PRESSONREGARDLESS, (8) BIOFARMER and (4) MAX THE MAGICIAN last time. There should be little separating the quintet on the revised weight terms.
(12) PLUS FOUR landed a betting coup over this track and trip on his Highveld debut. Another bold showing is on the cards.
Race 8 (1,450m)
(1) WARNING SOUND fluffed her lines last time in a stronger race but would have benefited from a subsequent 15-week absence.
(5) GREGARIOUS fits a similar profile and will likely fight for victory with progress expected.
(2) QUANTUM, (3) RATTLE BAG and (7) ANNEWITHAN E have the form and experience to be competitive.
Race 9 (1,450m)
(2) SATYAGRAHA made it start-to-finish to win over track and trip last time. It should pay to follow his progress.
(1) WILLOW EXPRESS is proven at this level and has the means to play a leading role, despite conceding weight to all.
Last-start winners (4) KING OF NUMBERS and (9) SUPER AWESOME remain competitive, while unexposed (8) CARS BIG AS BARS is not underestimated.

Mexico readies for historic third World Cup as Azteca Stadium tensions grow
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Liga MX - Quarter Final - Second Leg - America v Pachuca - Estadio Azteca, Mexico City, Mexico - May 11, 2024 General view inside the stadium before the match REUTERS/Raquel Cunha/File Photo MEXICO CITY - With a year until Mexico makes history as the first three-time World Cup host, the dream of a spectacular showcase is colliding with the practical challenges of modernising the iconic Azteca Stadium for global soccer's premier event. Beneath the imposing silhouette of Mexico's football cathedral - where Pele dazzled with Brazil in 1970 and Maradona's 'hand of God' propelled Argentina to glory in 1986 - construction crews tackle the formidable task of bringing one of the sport's most storied venues into the 21st century. The stakes are magnified as the 'Santa Ursula colossus' will host the tournament's opening match, a global spectacle that will focus the world's attention on Mexico from day one. Renovations will expand the stadium's capacity from 87,000 to 90,000, with upgrades centred on meeting FIFA standards through new changing rooms, enhanced hospitality zones, revamped VIP areas and additional seating in spaces previously occupied by boxes and lounges. While government officials and football administrators envisioned the project as a symbol of national pride, the renovation process has eroded trust between developers, local residents and other stakeholders. Stadium administrators announced in February that they had secured a 2.1 billion peso ($110.19 million) credit line from local financial group Banorte - along with a controversial new name: Estadio Banorte. FIFA regulations mean the stadium will be referred to as "Estadio Ciudad de Mexico" during the World Cup, yet the rebranding has sparked a fierce backlash from some fans, who view it as sacrificing football heritage for commercial interests. HARSH REALITY The backlash over the stadium's new name represents only one facet of the mounting tensions. Box and suite holders - some with relationships spanning decades - have threatened legal action after FIFA announced it would commandeer their seats during the tournament, overriding established contracts. One member of the Mexican Association of Box Holders has already filed a legal challenge to defend access rights. Beyond the stadium walls, frustration runs equally deep. Residents of Santa Ursula and surrounding neighbourhoods fear that promised infrastructure improvements like pedestrian bridges and transit lines will fail to address fundamental issues including inadequate lighting, water shortages and persistent traffic congestion. "We're not the stadium's backyard," one local resident told Expansion Politica. "But we're always treated that way." By contrast, Guadalajara and Monterrey, Mexico's other two host cities, face fewer obstacles. Guadalajara's 48,000-seat stadium, opened in 2010, has already hosted major events including the 2011 Pan American Games, while Monterrey's 53,500-capacity venue, inaugurated in 2015, needs only minor upgrades - primarily new turf and a pitch ventilation system. "We'll install a system to ventilate and oxygenate the pitch before replacing the grass," said Alejandro Hutt, Monterrey's Host City Manager. "That will be an important legacy from the World Cup and beyond." As construction continues, Javier Aguirre's Mexico squad are building towards a crucial summer, with a Gold Cup title defence ahead and friendly matches against Turkey this week, followed by Japan and South Korea in September. After failing to advance beyond the group stage at Qatar 2022 - their worst World Cup performance since 1978 - Mexican fans crave more than just a well organised tournament. They want to see Mexico break the 'fifth-game' curse and reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 1986, the last time they were World Cup hosts. For a football-mad nation, pride will come not merely from hosting - but from delivering on all fronts. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Revamped Azteca stadium to reopen next March ahead of 2026 World Cup
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Liga MX - Quarter Final - Second Leg - America v Pachuca - Estadio Azteca, Mexico City, Mexico - May 11, 2024 General view inside the stadium before the match REUTERS/Raquel Cunha/File Photo MEXICO CITY - Mexico City's government has confirmed that the famous Azteca Stadium, soon to be renamed "Estadio Ciudad de Mexico", will reopen in March next year ahead of the 2026 World Cup, Mayor Clara Brugada said on Wednesday. The renovated stadium, which hosted the 1970 and 1986 World Cup finals, will kick off next year's tournament with the opening match on June 11, as well as other group-stage and knockout matches at the global showpiece co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Construction is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2026 to allow time for operational testing. Modifications to the stadium will focus on meeting FIFA standards and will include new changing rooms, improved hospitality zones, upgraded VIP areas and new seating in areas previously used for boxes and lounges. No figure has yet been given for its final capacity. "Great projects for a great city, projects that will continue to benefit the population in all aspects, based on the comprehensive mobility plan combined with technology," Brugada told reporters. The upgrade is part of a wider urban regeneration initiative in the Tlalpan neighbourhood, which also includes improvements to public infrastructure, including better roads, additional bike lanes and enhanced public transport. Mexico City is also preparing to host a series of fan events across its 16 boroughs, with the largest FIFA Fan Fest planned for the Zocalo square in the historic centre area. The festival aims to offer free public screenings and encourage community participation and physical activity. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
