Tirunelveli ‘honour' killing case: Police sub-inspector couple picked up for inquiry
Sources in the police said that the deceased, C. Kavin Selvaganesh, 27, an IT employee from Arumugamangalam near Eral in Thoothukudi district, had reportedly proposed to the sister of the accused, Surjith, 23. While Kavin worked for a Chennai-based IT company, the woman, a Siddha practitioner, was employed at a private clinic in KTC Nagar, Palayamkottai. She belongs to a community in the Most Backward Caste (MBC) list. When the woman's parents Saravanakumar and Krishnaveni got to know about their daughter's liasion with a Dalit, they reportedly objected to it.
What happened on July 27?
Kavin had returned to his native village Arumugamangalam to take his ailing grandfather for treatment to the clinic where the woman was working, in KTC Nagar, on Sunday afternoon. Upon learning that Kavin was at the clinic, the woman's younger brother, Surjith, went there and asked him to accompany him for 'conciliation talks.'
Kavin was riding a bike along Mangammaal Salai in KTC Nagar, with Surjith riding pillion. After covering some distance on the road leading to the Palayamkottai-Thoothukudi four-lane highway, Surjith allegedly attacked Kavin with a machete. Kavin stopped the two-wheeler and attempted to flee, but Surjith chased him down and hacked him to death.
Passersby alerted the Palayamkottai police, who rushed to the spot and apprehended Surjith. He reportedly told the police that Kavin had been harassing his elder sister under the guise of love, and that she did not reciprocate his feelings. 'Since he continued to harass my innocent sister despite her repeated warnings, I murdered Kavin,' police sources quoted him as saying.
Family alleges 'honour' killing
The post-mortem examination on Kavin's body was performed at Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital on Monday (July 28). The relatives of the deceased, however, claimed to accept the body, alleging that it was an 'honour' killing.
'The couple had been in a relationship since their school days, and it continued up until yesterday. If it was truly unreciprocated love, as her family claims, they could have filed a complaint with the police, especially since the woman's parents are Sub-Inspectors,' said the relatives of the deceased.
'When it became clear to her family that she wanted to marry Kavin, they orchestrated this 'honour' killing. Therefore, the parents should also be arrested,' they added.
The police, after arresting Surjit, picked up Saravanakumar and Krishnaveni, who have been cited as accused 2 and 3 in the First Information Report (FIR), for inquiry. First Additional Sessions Judge Sathya, remanded Surjit to judicial custody till August 14.
Commissioner of Police, Tirunelveli City, Santosh Hadimani said: 'As of now, we only have the version of the accused. Only further investigation can reveal the details of the case.'

Odisha paper leak: Top exam agency official who made ‘100 calls after office hours' held
Records showing over 100 calls beyond office hours between a junior employee and a top official of the Board of Secondary Education (BSE) helped the Odisha Police's Crime Branch crack the case of the Odisha Teacher Eligibility Test (OTET) question paper leak, officials said. The Crime Branch on Sunday arrested Nihar Ranjan Mohanty, vice president of the BSE — the agency that conducts the OTET — for his alleged involvement. Earlier, seven persons, including a BSE data entry operator, Jitan Moharana, and several teachers were arrested in the case. The OTET, which was scheduled to be held on July 20, was cancelled on the evening of July 19 after a handwritten copy of the question paper went viral on social media. It affected over 75,000 candidates. In Odisha, clearing the test is mandatory for appointment and promotion of teachers in government and private schools at the elementary level. Crime Branch DG Vinaytosh Mishra said even though Moharana had no direct official dealings with Mohanty, there were over 100 calls between them beyond office hours. Earlier, Moharana was kept out of the examination process over his suspicious conduct in the past. 'Neither did Mohanty have any relation with Moharana, nor was there any direct official interaction. Despite this, there were over 100 calls between them in the past three months. This was the primary grounds for suspicion to zero in on the board vice president,' said the Crime Branch DG. As per Crime Branch sources, Mohanty's role was to set the question papers. Before printing, the Bhopal-based press had sent a password-protected copy of the question paper to Mohanty. He is accused of giving Moharana access to it and sharing it with two teachers, who sold it to others.

Two awarded life term for 2022 murder of Dalit youth in Ambedkar Nagar
Lucknow: A court in Ambedkar Nagar on Saturday sentenced two men to life imprisonment for axing a 28-year-old Dalit youth to death in 2022. Special judge Ram Vilas Singh convicted the duo under IPC's sections 302 (murder) and 34 (liability in criminal act) and section 3(2)(v) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 each. Special public prosecutor Sudip Mishra told TOI that the incident occurred in Gaya Ghat Pipri village under the Alapur police station area on the night of July 31, 2022. According to the FIR filed by Ramvriksha, the incident unfolded after former village pradhan Ranu Tiwari visited his younger brother Jalandhar, an electrician, to request a repair. Jalandhar agreed to do the work the following morning and subsequently left for the nearby Khajhapur. Around midnight, his wife heard noises and alerted the family. "When Ramvriksha tried calling up Jalandhar, the phone was answered by an unknown person who told them to come to the fields. Upon reaching, the family found Jalandhar lying severely injured. He was rushed to the govt hospital in Baskhari and then referred to the district hospital in Akbarpur, where he died during treatment," said Mishra. Following the complaint, an FIR was registered. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The accused — Aryan alias Sachin Yadav and Lalu alias Brijesh Yadav — were arrested. During the investigation, the police collected testimonies, scene maps, postmortem reports, call detail records, and video evidence. A charge sheet was filed, and the case was tried in the special SC/ST court. Hearing the case, the special judge found both the accused guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. "Despite the defence's plea that the accused were first-time offenders and came from impoverished backgrounds, the court sided with the prosecution, which highlighted the caste-based nature of the crime and the gravity of the offence. While the defence argued that there were no eyewitnesses and the case was a result of village enmity, the court held that the evidence — including the victim's dying statement, witness testimonies, and supporting forensic materials — was consistent and credible," the special public prosecutor said. "The judge concluded that the crime was intentional, caste-motivated, and brutal in nature," Mishra said.
