Property tax row: GMC officials delay meeting minutes, councillors protest
Ghaziabad: Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) officials have deferred submitting the minutes of the June 30 board meeting, drawing sharp criticism from councillors protesting the recent property tax hike. The minutes, which document the repeal of the proposed property tax hike, were to be shared publicly. Officials blamed a basement fire at the GMC office on Friday for the delay, but councillors have alleged deliberate delay and foul play. A group of councillors had earlier staged a sit-in protest at GMC's headquarters in Navyug Market, demanding the immediate release of the meeting minutes. "We called off the protest after officials, including municipal commissioner Vikramaditya Singh Malik, assured us that the minutes would be provided at 10am on July 25, after the kanwar yatra," said Himanshu Sharma, councillor of Ward 75. Now officials are saying that no work could be carried out at the office because the fire disrupted operations, preventing them from sharing the minutes on the assured date. This is a very uncanny coincidence," added Sharma. Meanwhile, Mayor Sunita Dayal said, "I was told that officials would share the minutes with my office at 10 am on Friday, but I have not received them. I ensured that the hike in property tax proposal was annulled, and it is for the officials now to answer anything related to the matter." In response, commissioner Malik has formed a committee led by additional municipal commissioner Jung Bahadur to ascertain the cause of the fire. "Minutes of the meeting could not be provided on the scheduled date because of the fire, and to rule out any foul play, the commissioner has formed a committee to probe the incident. Instructions have been issued to normalise working at GMC as soon as possible. The minutes of the meeting will be provided after that," said a GMC official. On the issue of property tax, a case was filed in the Allahabad High Court against GMC's decision to impose a hike, and the court is due to hear the matter on July 30. The hike in property taxes took effect on April 1. The property tax rates before April 1 were between Rs 0.32/sq foot on properties with less than 12m of road width, Rs 0.48 to Rs 2 for roads 12–24 metres wide, and Rs 0.65 to Rs 2.41 for wider roads. The revised rate is between Rs 0.75/sq foot to Rs 4/sq foot. In March this year, the board passed the proposal to link tax with the DM circle rate. GMC calculates tax based on the annual rental value (ARV) of a property.

HC dismisses plea against MBBS admission criteria
Panaji: The high court has dismissed a petition filed by a student seeking admission to the first year of the degree course of MBBS at GMC. She approached the HC after being aggrieved by the stipulations for admission in 2025-26, which restrict the eligibility of candidates in the general category to those who have passed Class XII or equivalent from schools or colleges in Goa, and are the state's residents. She stated that she was born to parents originally from Udupi in Karnataka, who in 2004 chose to settle down in Calangute. Both parents are doctors. The petitioner completed her schooling at Sharada Mandir and then got admitted to a college in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, which runs a residential programme in higher studies. This was because her brother had secured admission to BITS Hyderabad, and her parents, being professionals, were at times required to travel out of Goa. She appeared for her Class XII examination in Andhra Pradesh and secured 98.1% marks. The HC held that there is enough competition among students in Goa who have continued to reside in the state and also took the qualifying examination from an institution in Goa before appearing for NEET-UG and securing a ranking. 'Such candidates form a distinct class from those students who passed the qualifying examination from an institution outside the state of Goa, and, according to us, the classification between the two is reasonable and has a nexus with the object of reserving 85% of seats in govt medical college for those students who are domiciled in the state and also who cleared the qualifying examination from an institute within the state,' the HC said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ranked: The 25 Best Cities To Live In The World Learn More Undo It said, 'It is also not a case that the petitioner is completely ousted from the competition, as she can still compete in the 15% of seats, which are reserved in the All India quota in the state of Goa, and depending on her merit and standing in the merit list, she may take up a seat in Goa Medical College, which the rules permit,' said the division bench comprising justices Bharati Dangre and Nivedita Mehta.

Uproar in J&K over ‘killing' of Gujjar youth in Jammu shoot-out, CM joins demand for probe
J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday (July 25, 2025) joined the growing clamour from relatives and political parties to constitute an inquiry into the killing of a 21-year-old youth during an alleged shootout in Jammu a day ago. The deceased, Mohammad Parvez, was engaged in sand mining as a profession. According to the family, Parvez and his brother-in-law, residents of Niki Tawi, left home on Thursday to buy medicine. Family members were later called to identify a body at the Government Medical College (GMC) in Jammu by the police. Parvez got married two months ago, with his family claiming he had nothing to do with drug peddling. However, several Jammu-based news portals citing police officials, claimed there was a shoot-out with drug peddlers at Surey Chak area in Jammu's Satwari area on Thursday and Parvez was killed. The police did not furnish further details about the incident. Parvez's family along with the Gujjar community refuted the claim. 'It is a fake encounter,' Talib Hussian, a Gujjar social activist, said. Guftar Ahmed, a Gujjar leader who joined deceased's family in their protest on Friday, said, 'Top officials of the J&K Police should see the act of police on ground zero. Not a single FIR was registered against him. Union Home Minister and J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha should take strong action against officials involved in the killing of tribal youth,' Mr. Ahmed said. A spokesman of the Gujjar Bakerwal Students Alliance said the 'selective killing of Gujjar youth in Jammu through fake encounters is alarming'. 'Why was Parvez Ahmed murdered? Is this a conspiracy to silence us one by one? Under the garb of encroachment, drugs, and smuggling, our community is being targeted. We strongly condemn this,' the Alliance added. Meanwhile, the deceased's family also urged the L-G administration to initiate an impartial probe, announce compensation and a job for the kin. J&K CM Abdullah urged the Union Territory Police to hold an inquiry into the incident. 'The killing of Parvez of Niki Tawi in Jammu is highly unfortunate and deeply regrettable. Use of force by the police has to be calibrated and cannot be indiscriminate. J&K has paid a heavy price in the past because of incidents such as these,' the Chief Minister said. Mr. Abdullah said the incident should be investigated in a transparent and time bound manner. National Conference (NC) leader and Minister Javed Ahmed Rana raised the issue with the Divisional Commissioner and the Inspector General of Police, Jammu, 'over serious allegations of murder of a tribal youth'. 'An Inquiry is being initiated to uncover the truth and ensure justice in this case. The J&K government led by Mr. Abdullah will ensure that justice is delivered in the case,' Mr. Rana said. Former J&K Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti said the tribal youth was 'killed by the police and labelled as a drug dealer'. 'Even that may be the case, we still live in a democratic country where justice is served through rule of law as opposed to khap panchayats or kangaroo courts. Sincerely hope the Director General takes cognisance of this shocking incident by ordering a time bound impartial probe. We must not descend or condone a culture of extra judicial encounters because that's precisely what alienates people,' Ms. Mufti said. BJP leader Ravinder Raina also condemned the incident. The Islamic Welfare Organisation also expressed deep anguish and outrage over the 'tragic killing' of the Gujjar youth. 'Such a brutal and senseless act not only shatters the faith of the people in the law enforcement agencies but also raises serious questions about the continued misuse of power and growing trend of extrajudicial actions,' the organisation said. The organisation 'unequivocally condemned the act and demand a time-bound high-level judicial probe to ascertain the facts behind the killing'. 'The family of the deceased deserves justice, and the community demands transparency, fairness, and accountability from the system,' it added.
